Chapter 17 - The Adventurer’s Guild Part-3

I waited for some time there until the receptionist girl came back and asked me to put my right hand's index finger in front to complete the registration. I did as asked. She then took a small needle, stabbed me, and dropped a droplet of blood on the card she held in her hand. The card shined and a unique pattern emerged on it before disappearing.

She then handed me the card.

"Congratulations, you've successfully joined the adventurer's guild."

She said with her professional-looking smile.

"Thanks."

I thanked her and checked out my new guild card.

The card was made out of some magic metal alloy and had my Name, Age,

Gender, Race, Date of registration, and Registration number are written on it. On the bottom right, there was the letter D written in big bold font.

As I checked my card, with happiness and excitement, since I had become a real adventurer with this, the receptionist spoke.

"This is just formality but I'm obliged to tell you this. We don't force too many laws and regulations on adventurers but there are, in fact, a few simple rules."

The rules were fairly straightforward.

1. You're not allowed to harm civilians without just cause. While you have some authority now as an adventurer— meaning you can access various places— it doesn't extend to being a vigilante. The knights of the lords and kingdom are the only law enforcement here and almost everywhere else.

2. You are not to have fights with other adventurers outside of regulated duels. All disputes between adventurers should be taken to the guild where we'll mediate the fight.

3. You are to follow the laws of the respective city or province you are in. We are, in no way, obliged to defend you if you commit a crime. Instead, a severe crime leads to immediate suspension of your license and possibly a fine in case you have active quests.

"That's all. Please remember them. We are an organization that helps people, not trouble them."

Hearing the rules made me wonder if they were foolproof. Ill-defined laws or regulations led to loopholes. That's why modern regulations and legal documents were so excessively detailed. To avoid any possible loopholes.

Oh well, it's not like I'm a law expert. Considering this is a monarchy and the guild has authorities controlling them, they probably deal with such cases based on whatever the guild Master says. I guess that's also kinda a monarchy.

I wonder how much power a guild Master has here.

A lot of games I used to play had guild Masters. They had substantial power in the towns and cities. Enough to sometimes make the lords and the high horse aristocrats rethink their decisions.

"Got it. I'll keep them in my head."

"Now, as you can see, your current rank is D."

She pointed at the big bold letter marked on my guild card.

"Yes."

"At your rank, you can take requests that are marked from rank F to rank D. You may also choose a solo C-rank request, but if we find your abilities lacking, you might be rejected. So, do keep that in mind."

Fair enough, I guess.

"Can I take one right now?"

I asked. I wanted to do a quest and earn some money for an inn and food.

"Yes, please head over there to check the currently available quests. I recommend choosing a simple one as your first quest, Mr. Rio."

"Okay. Ah, one more question. Does the guild provide information?"

"What sort are you referring to, exactly?"

"Uh, I guess the local shops and such I guess."

And, I don't know, maybe how to go back to my homeworld? Haha, I am definitely not going to ask her that. She'll either think I'm crazy or that I'm suspicious. It's better to not get into any trouble.

"Yes, we do provide information on that. With your current rank, however, you won't be able to access any private or authoritative information."

"Understood."

Guess I'll ask her about a good inn after I am done taking the quests.

It was finally time to check out quests, so I headed to the board containing requests.

There was a whole bunch of subjugation and collection requests on the boards. I could probably take on the wolf and goblin ones but I also wanted to try the collection quests since they seemed like something my Map and Appraisal would ease me in.

I had yet to see an Orc but it was good— or not, I suppose— to see those pig monsters existed here as well. I once read in a novel that Orc meat tasted good and they were, in fact, from the family of pigs. So I was a bit interested in that. Of course, it was uncertain if my knowledge was correct for the ones in this world, though. And no, I was not thinking of eating them. I wasn't suddenly okay eating the meat of a fricking pig monster!

Well, I guess I did eat monster meat in the village. It tasted pretty good too. But eating Orcs is a little… Yeah. Too much.

I went back to the receptionist's desk with the goblin, wolf, orc, and a herb collection quest parchment paper. I felt like I could do them together in a few hours. But I didn't know what the herb looked like, so I wanted to enquire.

"Have you found a suitable quest?"

"Yes, I would like to take these, but I would like to know what this herb looks like. I haven't seen this before."

Hopefully, they have a sample or catalog. That'll be helpful.

She took the papers from my hands and surveyed the contents.

"Mr. Rio… are you sure you want to take them all at once? You seem to have selected Orc subjugation as well. Orcs are one of the stronger monsters to defeat for C rankers. I worry it might not be suitable as the first quest for a rookie D ranker."

"Oh, I see. Is it not possible to take it then?"

"No… It's not that you can't take it. But are you certain you can take on an Orc all on your own?"

"Probably?"

How strong are Orcs anyway? Weren't they like still low-class monsters in fantasy? And they're just C-rank.

I had seen a bear subjugation quest at rank B and bears, from my experience of seeing one near Forest of Demise, weren't even as strong as the Giant Viper.

"Please don't take this lightly. Subjugation quests can turn into a life and death situation if you are not up to the task."

The receptionist's expressions turned from polite to grim.

"I appreciate your concern. But I think I can handle it."

She sighed hearing my words. Maybe she thought I was one of those people who overestimated their strength. But in reality, I was just taking in relatively safer quests.

"Then I'll go ahead and assign them to you. But do remember that I have already warned you. In any case, in the future please just tell me the name of the quest for these repeatable ones since they can be done without even taking the request paper."

"Oh, okay. Got it."

"Also, here's the picture of the Sunbeam herb. Please return this booklet after you're done inspecting. You can also buy a copy at 15 coppers apiece."

"Ah, no, this is enough."

I appraised the image and searched my map with the name and image.

I got a few results around the vicinity of the town so I was satisfied with them.

Good, I can do it.

"Can I bring more than the required amount?"

I had a feeling I could accumulate more than just the required amount, so I asked.

"Yes, it'll be counted as a separate completion. So you can bring 10 stacks of herbs to get 10 quest completions. However, it is only valid for the quests marked 'Repeatable'."

"Got it."

I can farm this stuff as much as I like. Sweet!

I was about to leave when I remembered the other important thing I wanted to inquire about.

"Is there a good inn here that is recommended for adventurers? Possibly one where they provide food as well."

"If you would like, please visit the Moonbear Inn located just right ahead on the main road. Its services and food are both goods and the prices are affordable as well."

"Okay. Thanks. I'll check it out."

"You're welcome. Good luck on your first quest."

I left the guild somewhat happy. This whole becoming an adventurer was thrilling. Doing quests, making money, and ranking up. This was what all those protagonists did in their stories. And now I could experience the thrill of it as well.

Maybe being sent to a new world wasn't that horrible. Just kidding. It sucks balls. I miss the internet… And my family too.

I-It's not like I just gave the internet precedence over family. What kind of horrible person would do such a thing? Not me.
