Fog was everywhere, and the world seemed to have sunk into the depths of a turbid, gray-white fluid. Everything within sight blurred its boundaries in the fog—the distant city, the nearby roads... all became indistinct.
Having been active underground for just a while, the scenery on the surface had completely changed into an unrecognizable form.
Agatha, who had hurried back to the surface from the second water path, stood at the exit of the transportation station and looked at the situation on the streets with some astonishment. Now, no pedestrians could be seen on the roads; under the heavy fog, even the nearby streetlights were reduced to a floating, hazy glow. Apart from that, one could only see some dark red lights moving slowly in the fog, interspersed with the sound of steam mechanisms at work—these were the warning lights on the heads of steam walkers flashing.
