Every day, Vanna would cross the transept of the grand cathedral of Prand before noon, following the path among the flowerbeds to the sanctuary. It took a hundred and three steps to reach the path and twenty-seven steps from the entrance of the sanctuary to the statue of the goddess―since she became the Judge of this city, these numbers had become a part of her life.
She was familiar with everything in this cathedral, as familiar with each floor tile from the transept to the sanctuary as with her own hands.
During the many days and nights that had passed, she never thought this short path could feel so... difficult and long.
The sanctuary doors opened, the excessively bright sunlight tossed behind her, and after adjusting to the slightly dimmer interior, Vanna saw two figures standing before the central statue of the goddess.
