I don't know how long it took me to come around, but when I woke up I was in the infirmary, and a letter on the table next to me. My heart sunk to my stomach. I felt so sick I knew what the letter said before I even picked it up to read it. I knew I was fired for sticking my neck out for the girl. " Why oh why did I open my big mouth," I say to myself as tears threaten to spill from my eyes.
Ms. Clark,
We regret to inform you that your services are no longer needed. Please stay in the infirmary for as long as needed. Your reading date is set for two days from today. Take care and remember we are always watching.
Thank you.
Ms. Clark.....Ms. Clark...MS. CLARK!
"Yes," I finally snapped out of it and answered the nurse.
"Ms. Clark you may go anytime you are ready here just sign your release papers and you can be on your way" the nurse said dryly.
Oo..Ok I say trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall.
"Ms. Clark there is no reason to be getting upset the odds of you being a fated to someone is slime. Surly, a hunter has snuck a screening in on you at some point in time."
"What if they haven't? What if I am fated to someone? I have a daughter they will take her from me!"
"Having your child removed from your custody would be left up to your fated. Not all wolves are so jealous that they take their child away from their mother, but they do expect the fated female to submit without a fight. So, you would do well, to remember that."
"Wait can't I rej-"
"No! You would only be killing your child. I highly advise against such an irrationally decision. To reject your fated would shame him and make him look weak and unworthy. You of all people should know how a wolf feel's about their status in their society."
"Why did I have to speak up?" I say putting my face in my hands.
"You were tired of seeing that pompous prick be little those women and treat them like garbage. Your being let go was an awful mistake my dear. It should have been him stripped of his rank and removed, but alas it was you. Another female for them to screen and process. The Royals are really coming down on the society, and want all their fated found, so you were the easier choice for now."
"What do you think is going to happen to us?"
"Honestly, I feel like the human race will soon fall under the control of the wolves. It is only a matter of time. They are stronger and better organized. They are just buying their time for the right moment."
"I meant my daughter and I."
"Oh, silly me. You will get your screening done and move on with your life my dear. It happens to all of us eventually. You will figure out how to handle everything once your cards have been placed in front of you. If you have a fated then just submit and I'm sure everything will work out fine. Just don't push it with him. Most males now days use the children as leverage to make the mating process go over smoother."
"What happens when it's over? What will he do to her then?
"I'm not sure dear, all I can give you is scenarios to play over in your head. Either they will accept the child as their own or they won't. Younger wolves may want to rut you sooner to prove themselves and the older ones are more likely to accept the situation at hand and deal with it better. Not to say their wolf won't be extremely jealous that it is not their child that grew in your belly, but with age comes wisdom and understanding."
"So, how old are we talking?" I ask
"A wolf that has at least seen a life time I feel like would be more understanding to your ideal situation. Young wolves have barley lived and are out to concur the world. Well, Hun I must be off to finish my rounds, and I'm sure you're ready to get home to see that baby of yours. Good luck at your screening.
Sitting on the exam table I began to replay the events of the morning in my head. I just sat there trying to come up with a plan to get out of my situation. There only seemed to be one solution to my problem, and that was to run. I calmly got up from the table and gathered my things that had been brought to the infirmary. I calmly left the infirmary not to bring to much attention to myself. I was going to head home gather something's, and the money I had in my secret savings. Somehow, I knew this day was going to come. So, I always put back some money in case I had to get out in a hurry.
Getting down the hallway as calmly and quickly as I could. I bumped into what felt like a wall.
