Shiro beheaded the dragon in front of Lance. He had to kill the beast or his own life would be forfeit and the rest of his team would suffer for it.
Shiro's eyes burned and he wanted nothing more than to turn around and look at his friend – the boy with blue hair and kind eyes who was looking at him, as though he were a stranger – but there was no time, no time. So he raised his sword above the head of the dragon, which roared in triumph and took its final breath before collapsing, defeated.
Lance gasped when he saw the dead carcass fall from the sky, the dragon's scales rattling in a death rattle. "What happened, what happened?! Did you just decapitate that thing?!" Shiro did not answer, just continued staring blankly ahead of him, face twisted in pain and grief. "You did what?!" It was Hunk who broke through Lance's haze of disbelief first.
