Chereads / A Cosmic Collision Course / Chapter 2 - The Dream

Chapter 2 - The Dream

A loud, blaring sound from a car collision followed by screams and chants was heard from the street in a three-room house, where a young Mick Moore and his family are sleeping. Waking them up instantly.

"Mom! Mom! Did you hear that!?" Mick yelled. "It sounds like the riot is starting!"

"I was in the middle of a God damn dream, boy! What the hell are you on about" Mick's mom responds.

"Didn't you hear? The people aren't having it with the Mayor's empty promises, and they're demanding that he steps down immediately." Mick's older brother Lex says.

"I swear no good will ever come from this. They will end up killing each other instead". Mick's mom says.

They ignore the riot and Mick prepares for school.

Lex drives Mick to school, drops him off then goes to his school.

It's now 1:30 pm and Mick has a Maths class.

"Mr Moore. Mr Moore!" shouts his teacher Mr Grayson. "Are you going to pay attention or are you planning on sleeping your way into college"

"I'm...sorry, sir. It's just that I already know all this." Says Mick, with a tone indicating frustration.

"Is that so?" asks Mr Grayson, who's also frustrated.

"Yes. I mean, when are we going to do some calculus or some trigonometry? This isn't taking us anywhere."

"If that's what you want, you can do it, but not in my class. Get out!"

Mick takes his bag and exists the class to sit in the hallway.

He takes out his notebook and starts going through the formulas he has been experimenting with since he got introduced to Maths. While he's busy with them the school principal comes to him and asks him why he isn't in class.

"I got tired of being taught what I already know. So I'm here learning on my own." Mick answers.

"Oh? What are you...what are you learning?" The principal asks, in a calm tone.

"Calculus."

"Let me see"

The principal looks at the notes in astonishment. Mick has been developing his formulas in hopes that he can find a loophole in quantum physics, which he wishes to fully understand and even alter to his imagination.

"Where did you get all this information, son?" The principal asks.

"In my head...it just comes to my head" answers Mick.

"Interesting. Come back to me when you've completed these. I have some people I need to introduce you to, but right now, get back to class.''

The bell rings just before he could respond. He jets out of the school, forgetting that his brother has to come and pick him up. He runs home to tell his mom about what the principal said. But as soon as he arrives at the door, he senses that there is something wrong. Something about the whole feel of the house seemed odd. He looks around the block, but instead of seeing houses, he sees big white walls. He then quickly runs into the house and sees his mother sitting in front of the window, near a huge pile of white clothes, quiet and still as a statue.

"Mom?'' he utters the words nervously as he struggles to speak. "Are you... Are you okay?"

She doesn't respond and he moves closer to her and taps her on the shoulder.

She jumps from shock and hits the window out of frustration, causing a minor crack. "Boy! What are you doing?" she shouts at him, but before he can respond she runs to the other room and comes back with a box of pills.

"Here. It's time for you to take your pills."

"Pills? What for? I don't take any pills, mom"

"I'm not your mother. Stop calling me that and take your pills!"

"Mom, you're scaring me" his voice trembles in fear.

"My name is Stephany, your nurse. Do you know where you are?"

"I'm...I'm home"

"No. You're in a mental hospital. Don't you remember?"

Mick contemplates this for a while then he gets mad and grabs her by the throat.

"No...no, no. You're lying to me. Why are you lying to me!?" his face is already red with anger as he tightens his grip.

"Let...go of me!" she struggles to scream, but the scuffle catches the guards' attention. They quickly grab Mick and throw him to the ground. He tries to fight them off as more come and grab him then Stephany injects him with a sleeping serum. A few hours later he wakes up in a dark room, strapped to a bed, where only he and a doctor are present.

There's an unsettling silence in the room for two minutes, and then the doctor stands up and sits beside Mick. He stares at him for a while then gets back to his seat.

"You're a smart man, Mr Moore." The doctor says. "It's a shame that all that turned into this."

Mick doesn't say a word as he tries to understand what the doctor is talking about.

"I don't think you're crazy. Maybe you are...maybe I am for believing you. Let me ask you this, Mr Moore." The doctor moves his chair closer to Mick. "Why are you here?"

"I don't know. I didn't put myself here, you guys did." Mick says.

"Yes, we did. But what did you do?"

"Look, I don't know what you're talking about. I woke up this morning and went to school, came back home, and now I'm here. What else am I supposed to say?" Mick says as he's beginning to get irritated.

"I want you to tell me why you're here." The doctor's tone gets louder.

"I told you, I don't..."

But before he can finish, he falls to sleep and wakes up in a dream where he's sitting on a chair, looking out of the window, watching his past.
