Chapter 28
"Oh, I think you're sick, Dek. I just wanted to let you know, now I'm at Mas Azzam's house. When can we meet, there's something I want to talk to you about, Dek."
I smiled at the tone of Kak Winda's voice, I haven't heard that Medan accent in a long time. I miss it too.
"Tomorrow I can, Sis. Where do you want to meet?" I asked.
Sis Winda mentioned the name of the hospital where Umami worked. Incidentally then, I might as well look for information about Umami there later.
I also agree with Kak Winda's suggestion. He said he would take Mas Azzam to the hospital, then when he got home he would order a taxi. So before going home, we will meet at the cafe in front of the hospital.
I covered my phone while humming cheerfully, tomorrow I'll find out why Umami hasn't contacted me for over a week.
_____
The next day, I left earlier than my promise with sis Winda. I will meet Umami first, then meet my ex-honey.
My taxi has arrived in front of the hospital. Hesitantly I entered the pure white building.
I went straight to the emergency room, because as far as I knew he was on duty there. When I got there, I looked around looking for his figure. However, I didn't see the Umami figure I was looking for either. I don't know where he is, maybe he's busy taking care of his patients.
"Sister, I'm sorry, may I ask a question?" I asked a nurse passing by.
"Yes, Ma'am. Can I help you?"
"Um, may I know. Is Doctor Umam on duty today or not?" I asked, slightly embarrassed.
The nurse smiled and said that by chance, Doctor Umam had just returned from a remote area with Doctor Abdi.
"It looks like Doctor Umam is in his room. Ma'am, just go straight, later at the end of the hallway is his room. There's a nameplate, really, on the door," said the nurse.
"Thank you, Sister," I said.
The nurse nodded and said goodbye to return to her room. It seemed that the nun was the only one left, so I looked for Umam's room as the nun had told me.
I had arrived at the end of the hall, it was true what the nurse said. There was Umam's name hanging on the tightly closed door in front of me.
I raised my hand to knock on the door, but I stopped it because I heard a woman's voice crying from inside Umam's room.
Did I mishear? I put my ear to the door. Sure enough, there was a woman's voice crying and also Umam's voice calming her down.
My heart rumbled, negative thoughts immediately took over me. Furiously, I turned the doorknob. It turned out to be unlocked, I just pushed the door wide open.
My chest tightened at the sight that was presented in the room. Umam was hugging a woman who was crying. They hugged, it broke my heart.
Umam was also surprised to see me coming, she immediately let go of her hug. Then rushed to me who spontaneously took a few steps back.
My tears flowed without realizing it, I was disappointed with the reality that I saw earlier.
"Clara, I..." I cut off Umami's self-defense, I didn't want to hear any excuses from her.
"Stop! Enough Umam! No need to give any excuses. I'm sorry!"
I ran away from Umam who kept shouting my name.
I continued to run without caring about the people who were surprised to see me. I'm disappointed, I hate it!
***
The knock on the door was heard for the umpteenth time, the umpteenth time I just let it stop by itself. Since returning from the hospital earlier, I locked myself in my room.
I had to cancel the promise with Sis Winda. I chose to reflect and lament my fate that was never lucky in romance.
Papa and Cleo took turns calling for me to get out of the room. They said that Umam had been waiting for a long time. He wanted to talk, wanted to explain everything.
"Just tell him to go, Pa. I don't want to see him again!" I cried when Papa knocked on the door again.
"You'd better say it yourself, Clara. Papa never taught you to be a coward," Papa said firmly.
"But, Pa...."
"Come out and say it right now!"
Papa returned to being a strict Papa and did not accept any excuses like before. I had to open the bedroom door with a frown on my face. Papa stood with his sharp eyes I couldn't bear to look at.
"Clara," Papa called making me look up at him.
"Yes, Papa," I said.
"Meet him, don't let the problem drag on again without a solution," Papa said in a softened tone.
I nodded then went to the living room to meet Umami. The man was sitting with his head down as if he were working on the floor below him.
I sat silently in front of him. Apparently Umami noticed my presence, she looked up and our eyes met for a moment.
"Clara, please give me time to explain everything. What you see is not what it seems. She is Angel, my colleague."
Umami tried to explain to me. However, for now I don't accept any reason.
"Why are you bothering to explain to me, Umam? What do I care, I was just surprised. After all, there is no relationship between us, right? What did I say yesterday, the city is only friends. Then, what do I care about All of these?"
Umami was taken aback by my answer. He must not have thought that if I could say there was nothing between us. However, that is the reality.
Umami hasn't declared her love for me yet, we're just getting close. That's all, even though honestly in my heart the seeds of love began to grow again without being able to be prevented.
Now, the seed has withered back before it blooms.
