Chapter 6 - First Day (Part 1)

The start of something new is where we as a whole need to begin sooner or later in our lives. The one thing this multitude does is often connect everything and what will be shared for all its intents and purposes. The only thing is that you don't have any idea what it is doing to be like. Not even the meeting and the assumptions for my work job would have prepared me for the peculiar errand I was about to confront.

I had managed to carry some of the needed stuff to Jada's place for the interim moment until I had arranged permanent choices. Her residence was far from Redwood and was convenient. She scooped in to show me a few places over the weekend, but now it was Monday.

I stared in the full-length mirror, and I saw a woman well put together. I've caught up my hair in one to show my pearl earrings. I had on a light blue office dress and pumps. I looked once more in the mirror with my alerted eyes, and left for my first day,

Feeling confident and my appearance intact, I stepped into the lobby to head for the elevator. Before I had gotten too far I spotted Miss. Flowercakes. She was staring at her phone, for a brief moment before she saw me.

She began to walk my way, I guess to greet me. I find this quite comforting to see her. She then grabbed my hand surprisingly as she turned and started to pull me.

"Morning," she sang as she paced to the elevator. I replied friendly to her, but she didn't give me the chance to say anything anymore. The way she was walking, I had to skip a beat to keep up. She couldn't even wait as she pressed the elevator button.

As we enter, with her hands still clasped unto mine. People were starting to enter as well, and she immediately start to ignite them with her hands.

"No, no, no... we are full," stopping them in their tracks, leaving us both in the elevator. She then pressed floor eightieth instead of the twenty-ninth, so urgently while hovering a card over the monitor as it turn from red to green. As the door closed, she released my hand.

"Sorry, about that," she said smiling.

"No, worries," I said to her, not really minding her friendliness.

"Aren't we going on the wrong floor?" I asked. She glanced at the number pad.

"No, we're on..." She then looked at me as if she realized something. "That floor was a temporary one," she said fanning her hand. "Mr. Hayes's office is really on the eightieth floor."

"Oh," I said. Then thought to myself, why would he need to be on a different office floor to do my interview?

"So, Miss. Flowercakes..." I began.

"Oh, dear. Please call me Flowers," she interrupted me. "Soraya, right?"

"Yes."

"You don't mind... right? Since we will be sharing a desk and all. The only person I have formality would be Mr. Hayes," she said as she went on ranting.

"Oh, no I don't...." I scoop of light immediately blindsided me. I gazed in amazement as I saw the city through the see-through glass provided by the elevator. It was like I had a first-class showcase, seeing the rich Paramount city gazing back at me. I gazed in amazement, as I could see everything like a checker puzzle set.

"Amazing right," Flowers grinned at me.

"It is," the words manage to slip my lips. I felt like I was floating into the heavens.

"You'll get used to it," she complimented.

When the excursion is finished the silver entryways part ways in shutting out the scenery to the floor. This floor contains display after display of a rich Redwood history and lineage. Interestingly, I paused for a moment and indulged myself in past these exhibits with pace.

"Well, I must say welcome to Redwood," Flowers said, forgetting a few moments ago she was there.

"I just have a few rules for you. Rule number one, no one is allowed on this floor, unless they have an appointment," she showed me the register with today's date, with no names currently on it. "And I mean, no one except for me, you and Mr. Hayes." Her eyes got darker on that notion.

"Understood," I said, realizing her bright side turn dark for a moment.

"Two, the left corridor is off limits, so don't even think about it. And three," she gave me a pass card. "Don't lose it, it's the pass card to this floor. So, even if you accidentally press floor eightieth floor, you would need this for approval," she this as I took it from her. I looked puzzled for a moment, but I thought I would ask another time.

"The right corridor is Mr. Hayes's office, he's not in right now, but he did leave specific instructions for you." She waved her hand at me to come around the big receptionist desk.

"This is your laptop," she press the button for it to turn on. "this is work log-in info," she said as he handed me a sticky note with these details. She went on further to show me where the files were and how to access my email. She showed me the restroom, while she quickly checked out her face. she did go on to tell me she eats in the company's cafeteria and would show me during lunchtime.

She then spun around a couple of times around the receptionist cubicle, that she and I now shared, big enough for at least two more persons.

"Look," she paused to give some attention. "I have a lot of catching up to do, so, unfortunately, today ... and maybe tomorrow," her eyes were deep in thought. "I'll be busy a lot doing of stuff for Mr. Hayes. So, get familiar with your laptop and I guess review the document he sent to you via email, and I'll see you around lunchtime." Flowers beamed at me

"Aha, yes... sure," I replied, as she hurried to the elevator and waved to me as it closed.

I looked at my inbox, and one message was highlighted. I clicked on it to review. It was simple and to the point. 'Examine file. P.S. Tell me what errors you find. Mr. Hayes.' I downloaded the attached file. The company name was Wooderd. 'Was this a subsidiary?' I thought to myself, as I began to analyze the document.

I spent the reach of my time reviewing. I was alone of course the awkward silence, was more than enough but calming. It was noon, and Flowers did come for me as she promised and went to the cafeteria.

The cafeteria had decorative walls, white chairs, and wooden tables that were all clean and looked fashionable. As you left the elevator, you could see the separate areas. You could easily find the food court lined up beside each other and an open space to eat. At the food court where all the foods were served, people were making their respective lines to get their meals.

While you were waiting in line, you can check the menu by looking at the pictures of foods that are placed in a big glass case in each different section. Calories and how much nutrition each food has are also written in the pictures.

There it seemed like the food area had something to match a person's tastes, vegan to non-vegans. The floor was designed for food catering only and seems like there are about fifty tables in the room, I guess. The cafeteria was crowded, but some people were collecting while others were staying.

I could smell the delicious meals from where I stood. If there was one place you could meet someone, it seems like everyone was one the building came to this one spot, the cafeteria.

"So, see anything you like," Flowers, cheerfully. I was seeing so many opinions I honestly couldn't decide. They had a food court catered to juice only to sandwiches as well.

"I'm new here... why not surprise me," I said beamingly. She clasped her hands together in front of her.

"It would be my pleasure." She decided to get me

Flowers got me crispy fried chicken, with super smoky tomato spaghetti and warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream piled on top of it. I realize you were able to pick one item from various food courts if you like. I thought the easiness the cafeteria had to offer, was so convenient.

Everyone was chatting, laughing, and relaxed, eating their food, just the way a cafeteria should be. Every once in a while it can get uncomfortably loud, which is to be expected, and quickly quieted down. It was the right size for the number of persons that use it at a time because there is more than enough space for everyone to always have a seat and the room is never crowded.

I could see some individuals grouped together at one table. I figured they have something in common or were friends. The line can get quite long, sometimes extending beyond the room for certain food booths, but for certain the wait wasn't too long.

"You like?" Flowers asked. I shook my head in acknowledgment, as I was taking another bite of the spaghetti.

"It is so... good," I eventually said. "I can't believe that you guys have this."

"Ah, it's one of the perks working here," she glistens.

"Flowers!" I heard someone shout her name in excitement.

I looked up at this tall, with fair skin man. He had dark blue eyes, a softly shaped jaw, and bony cheeks. His well-groomed dark brown hair is short and thick was un-styled. This suited his slender neck and broad shoulders.

"So, you find company now?" He said.

"No, it's not like that... she working with me on the same floor," Flowers said.

"Wait. You have company now... like actual company," he questioned her.

"Yup!" She cheered. I stared back and front at them. "Oh," Flowers perked. "Soraya, George... George, Soraya," she greeted us.

He extended his hand. "It's pleasure to meet you," he said warmly, as smiled at him.
