Chereads / Griffonborn / Chapter 11 - Meaty Menace

Chapter 11 - Meaty Menace

Vidar walks into the Pyro Myrtle Tavern and sees Jeremy sitting at a corner table, engrossed in a scroll. With a sense of anticipation, Vidar approaches him, catching his attention. Jeremy looks up and smiles warmly.

"Vidar! Good to see you," Jeremy greets him. "I've been doing some digging about that mysterious figure you're looking for. I think I may have found something intriguing."

Vidar's eyes light up with curiosity. "Tell me, Jeremy. What did you discover?"

Jeremy leans in, lowering his voice to maintain the secrecy of their conversation. "I managed to track down a few eyewitnesses who claim to have seen this figure you're searching for. They describe him as tall and cloaked, with an air of mystery surrounding him."

Vidar's excitement grows. "Did they mention anything else? Any distinguishing features?"

Jeremy nods, flipping through his annotations. "Yes, a few witnesses mentioned a peculiar symbol on the figure's cloak. It's an intricate design that resembles a swirling vortex. It seems to be the key identifier."

Vidar ponders for a moment, his mind racing with possibilities. "Interesting. Any idea where this figure might be now?"

Jeremy glances around cautiously before continuing. "There have been whispers among the locals. Apparently, this figure has been seen lurking near the abandoned Windridge on the outskirts of town. It's an eerie place, said to contain strange citizens that have a strange love for meat."

Vidar's determination intensifies. "That's a great lead, Jeremy. I'll head there immediately to investigate. Thank you for your help."

Jeremy offers a reassuring smile. "You're welcome, Vidar. Be careful, though. The rumors surrounding Windridge are not to be taken lightly. If anyone can uncover the truth, it's you."

With a nod of gratitude, Vidar turns and leaves the tavern, his mind filled with thoughts of the mysterious figure and the secrets that lie within Windridge.

Vidar walks to a strange town in Rakoth.

"It's very quiet here, a little too quiet for my liking," Sprite says.

Vidar looks around and doesn't sense anything.

"Is this an abandoned town?" Vidar asks.

Just then a villager jumps out of his home and says, "Hey, you there, h-help m-m-me, h-help me, m-m-me."

Vidar says, "Um, sure, I'll help ya out. What seems to be troubling you?"

"An unknown merchant sold us such a-amazing, tasty me-meat, but sadly we've eaten all of it! P-please h-h-help us find this me-meat-meat. We r-really need it!" The villager says with a crazed hunger look in his eyes.

Sprite inside Vidars mind, says, "Son of a biscuit eater, this villager looks ready to fight you for this if we don't get the meat. We need to hurry up! There's a place by this cavern I know called Space Mildly Hole where Fomorians are known to be at. Let's go!!"

Vidar starts running towards Space Mildly Hole.

Once they get there, Sprite notices a Fomorian looking at Vidar and the Fomorian attacks him. The Fomorian lunges at Vidar viciously, shooting Water Echo energy in the form of a condensed ball towards Vidar. Vidar dodges it and shoots Lightning Echo energy from his right hand and spheres of lightning from the other. The Fomorian jumps in the air and creates a water whip with both its arms grabbing Vidars legs. It shoots a powerful beam of water from its mouth knocking Vidar to the ground.

Surprised, Vidar gets back on his feet quickly and says, "This guys a tough one."

"Be careful, you used lightning again when you're not fully ready."

"Don't worry, I have more than lighting at my disposal."

Vidar creates a vortex of air around both of his legs to propel him in the air. He claps his hands together and creates a sharp edge on his finger tips of branches and dives at a blinding speed towards the Fomorian.

Vidar lets out a battle cry and yells, "Your mine!!!"

Vidar connects the attack, effectively beating the Fomorian.

The Fomorian is unconscious and several pieces of the creature's meat slide off its bones. Vidar picks up a few while Sprite grabs the rest to put it in a storage section of a pocket dimension of Sprite's own creation. Vidar starts heading back to the town and wonders if this meat is safe to eat.

"Do you hear that?" says Sprite.

"Arrrggggggggg MEAT!!!!!!!!!!!"

Vidar says, "What is that noise? Could it be that guy from the village?"

Vidar quickened his pace back to the village. Before Vidar gets to the village, Kappas surrounds him to pounce on him.

Vidar sees this and jumps in the air saying, "Get out of my way!"

He creates a ball of fire in both of his hands, slams down on the Kappas, destroying them. Cooking the meat upon impact, he takes some into storage as well as Sprite.

"We need to go back. Their trance like love for meat is weird. They might try to eat you if you're not careful," Sprite says.

Vidar looks worried, "Son of a biscuit eater, don't say things like that."

Vidar uses air under his feet to propel him to the village faster.

Vidar gets to the villager and throws both the meats at his feet, "Here, take it!"

"Oh yeah baby, this smells exactly like the meat that the merchant gave me," he laughed, sniffing it.

Sprite looks around the surrounding area and is surprised to see villagers crowding around them.

"Why are there more villagers here?

Vidar looks around confused and takes a step back.

A villager says, "You took your sweet time, we were thinking about eating you."

Vidar looks even more confused and starts laughing nervously.

Another villager says, "We kid, we kid. Haha! Should have seen the look on your face."

The other villagers all say thank you and, laughing, offer leftover meat to Vidar.

"Haha, no thank you."

The villagers begin to walk back inside their homes.

"That was interesting," says Sprite.

Vidar nods his head and begins to quickly walk out of the village.

Just then villagers come out of their home and start chanting, "Meat! Meat! Meat! More meat!!!!!"

The villagers say, "Now that we have eaten meat that has been scorched with tasty flames we need meat from the darkness!"

Vidar looks at them strangely, thinking that they are joking, "How am I supposed to get you meat from darkness?"

"CAVERNS! CAVERNS! CAVERNS! Amazing dark meat is the caverns! Please, you must get us this meat! If you don't, we really will eat you.

The villagers chime in, "EAT YOU, EAT YOU, EAT YOU!!!!!"

"They've really lost their minds. Now we need to double it and find a cavern around here. Luckily I know of one that's nearby called Nesent cavern," says Sprite subconsciously.

In his mind Vidar replies, "Alright, lead the way."

With a sense of urgency, Vidar followed Sprite's guidance towards the nearby Nesent Cavern. The moonlight filtered through the thick canopy of trees, casting eerie shadows on the forest floor. As they approached the entrance, a chilling breeze blew through the air, heightening the atmosphere of mystery and danger.

"Vidar," Sprite whispered urgently, "This way, to the Nesent Cavern. Time is of the essence."

Vidar nodded, his voice filled with trepidation, "I can feel it, Sprite. Something isn't right."

Entering the cavern, Vidar's senses were immediately assaulted by the eerie stillness that enveloped them. The faint echoes of distant dripping water reverberated through the dark, winding tunnels that seemed to stretch endlessly into the earth. The walls were adorned with ancient symbols and markings that hinted at a forgotten history, secrets waiting to be unraveled.

"It's as if time itself has stood still," Vidar murmured as they ventured deeper into the depths. The flickering light from Vidar's torch danced along the damp walls, casting eerie shadows that seemed to come alive with each step. The air grew colder, and a sense of foreboding settled upon them, like a heavy shroud.

But Vidar remained undeterred, his determination unwavering. "We're close," he said in a determined tone. "I can sense it."

Navigating through treacherous paths and overcoming various obstacles, Vidar's heart raced as he stumbled upon a hidden chamber. The room was filled with an otherworldly glow, emanating from a pool of mysterious, shadowy liquid at its center.

Vidar approached the pool cautiously, his voice barely above a whisper. "This must be it."

He noticed an array of strange creatures lurking in the shadows, guarding the precious meat. They hissed and growled, their eyes glowing with a hunger that matched the villagers.

Sprite's voice was a mere murmur, "Prepare yourself, Vidar. They won't let us take it without a fight."

Vidar's heart pounded as he faced the Shadowkin. He took a deep breath, and his voice was resolute. "Stay close, Sprite. This won't be easy."

Sprite nodded, eyes filled with determination. "I'm with you, Vidar. We've trained for this moment."

As the first Shadowkin lunged at them, Vidar unleashed a burst of flames. The creature hissed and staggered back, its shadowy form flickering. Vidar shouted, "Watch their movements, Sprite! They hide in the darkness."

Sprite's voice was steady. "I see them. Let's use your lightning to light up this place."

Vidar nodded, his hands crackling with energy. Bolts of lightning illuminated the chamber, revealing the grotesque forms of the Shadowkin. Vidar called upon his powers once more, sending lightning cascading toward the creatures.

The Shadowkin retaliated with blasts of shadowy energy. Vidar grunted as he deflected them with a barrier of fire. "Keep them off balance, Sprite!"

Sprite darted through the chaos, their daggers glinting in the eerie light. "I'm working on it, Vidar! They won't touch the meat."

A particularly large and menacing Shadowkin lunged at Vidar. He somersaulted to the side, narrowly avoiding its claws. "Stay focused, Sprite! We can do this."

Sprite's voice was fierce as they lunged at another Shadowkin. "I won't let them win, Vidar. Not today!"

As the battle raged on, Vidar and Sprite fought with unwavering resolve. They dodged, countered, and unleashed their elemental powers with precision, slowly but surely pushing the Shadowkin back into the shadows.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last of the Shadowkin dissolved into wisps of shadow. Vidar's voice was triumphant as he carefully collected the coveted meat of darkness. "We did it, Sprite. The village is safe."

Sprite's voice was filled with relief. "And they'll have you to thank for it, Vidar."

Together, they made their way back to the village, the precious cargo in hand, their bond stronger than ever after facing the encroaching darkness and emerging victorious.

Returning to the village, Vidar was met with a mix of relief and anticipation. The villagers, seemingly restored to their senses, gathered eagerly as Vidar presented them with the meat they so desperately craved.

With gratitude and relief, the villagers expressed their heartfelt thanks, their eyes no longer clouded by the madness of their insatiable hunger. Vidar's heroic efforts had not only satisfied their physical cravings but also restored their sanity and brought back a sense of normalcy to their lives.

As Vidar took a moment to catch his breath, he reflected on the challenges he had faced and the mysteries he had unraveled. He knew that his journey was far from over, but the satisfaction of bringing peace to the villagers and unearthing the secrets of the darkness-infused meat filled him with a renewed sense of purpose.

With the memory of their grateful smiles etched into his mind, Vidar set his sights on new horizons, ready to face whatever adventures lay ahead and continue his quest for truth and justice in this ever-unfolding world of mystery and magic.
