Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Edmund POV

After Edwina left my apartment, she returned to her former apartment at Isle

Avenue, a three-room apartment she bought for herself. I know a little peace now except that my heart still longs for Lucy. I had been having a lot of dreams about getting the love of my life back but I do worry, if she will accept to work again in my company, talk less of if she would accept me as her lover. Two years had passed since I last saw her. I wonder how Lucy is faring, if she had gotten another job or not.

These thoughts continued in my mind until I heard the forceful push of the door, the entrance door of my five room apartment. Out of the need for seclusion, I had left my more secured mansion to live here alone. The absence of Lucy in my life has created a void no one and nothing can fill except she comes back, it's as if I lost someone dearly loved to death where I'll not see the person again. The depression I've always battled with right from childhood comes up more stronger now. Last time I went to the hospital, a week ago, the psychiatrist diagnosed me with chronic depression. I told him it was because of a girl I loved and lost, but still loved. This loss has affected me quite well in my company as my staff complain behind my back how harsh and aloof I'm with them. I wished they said so in my face, I'd tell them it's not intentional but because of the inner battles I'm fighting in my mind. This inner battle had persisted for years, I thought I'd get rid of it only for Lucy to come in and worsen everything.

Heavy footsteps like that of many men match forth towards my room. Fear grips me, who would know I'm staying in here if not Edwina. I begin to suspect that these are hired armed robbers and they're surely sent by someone that knows about my personal life. I never told anyone I was relocating to this secluded environment for the meantime, only Edwina knows. Tears stream down my cheeks at this betrayal, it must surely be her as only two of us lived here before I sent her packing. The action I took could be the main reason behind this. "If I die, I die. I'm a soldier born to die!" With these words of encouragement, I picked up my gun and silently headed upstairs. I tiptoed so I wouldn't be heard.

I'm glad it's night and dark here except for the dim light of the chandelier which got reduced by me to that level. From up, I see clearly, five men in the midst of the entrance walking upstairs while four point their guns in different directions. With the speed of a lightning flash, I released my bullets on them.

"Run, run, run."

"We're trapped!" The screams of frustration and shock came from about two or three of them. It happened before I realized it, they had escaped but glad my bullet got one of them. They had come to kill me but I gunned down one of them, it would serve as a lesson to them always each time they recall losing their member. Had they forgotten I'm a soldier, trained to kill. I hurriedly descended the staircase still pointing my handgun in different directions in case one or more of them didn't run away but were hiding somewhere.

I need to call the police to come take the stinking body of this guy out of here. "You deserve what you got!" I said as I moved closer towards it. It must be dead as my bullet caught it. Out of fury, I raised my gun towards the body but something so surprising happened, he twisted his body in pain.

"Oh! I thought you were dead?" I raised my gun closer to the robber.

"No, no, please!"

"Argh, the voice of a woman. You're a woman?" I can't just handle this. A woman joined the gang of robbers to rob me. Tension builds up fast in my chest, my suspicions rise to its peak. I'll drop dead if I remove her mask to discover that it's Edwina. But how could a pregnant woman as she claimed join the league of robbers to rob the man she claims to love, my mind is really focused on her because she was the one moving ahead giving directions to the others. She must know in and out of here.

I dragged the mask off her face and pointed a torch to her face. "What?" The scream that escaped my throat could be heard a thousand miles away, never did I expect to be overwhelmed with the greatest shock of my life at this moment. "Lucy, what're you doing? Are you not the girl I met on my first day in my company, what are you doing here?" I became confused to the extent of asking what she was doing in my house when I knew already what she came for. She twitches her body in pain, blood dripping from the side of her chest. Tears stream down my eyes, I can't watch my woman dying in front of me but what she did just baffled me. I'm indeed dumbfounded.

I thought it was Edwina that hired robbers to assassinate me because I worked against her motives only to discover it's the woman I've been dying hard to cross part with again that had led a league of robbers into my apartment. How did she even know I'm here, here in this place you'd hardly know someone lived as my apartment is located very deep inside the bush with no commercial activity around. Edwina always complained of fear and terror while she stayed with me, she was afraid of certain uncertainties but I was never being that I'm a soldier and trained to withstand different conditions. There are cases where we stayed inside the forest for nearly a month, we eat, sleep and train there in the Academy, so this' not a big deal to me.

Lucy murmurs some pleas from her mouth, her voice is so faint that I can barely hear anything. It's here I realized, out of shock, my gun had dropped to the ground without my notice. I need to do something right now, lest I miss her forever and that'll be the worst situation forever. She'd come to attack me but I've forgiven her, it's through this we have met again. I need to be glad that my dream has come through even though it's not exactly in the way I'd wanted.

I called the ambulance, and in a few seconds a siren is heard from a distance approaching my residence. My heart pounds faster than before as Lucy's eyes are now closed and no words are coming from her mouth again, frustration runs through my entire body, my whole being. "Is she alive?" I asked the paramedic in front of me.

"We will ascertain that when we reach the hospital."

I watched as Lucy's being taken into the ambulance and the door closed behind her. The two paramedics including the driver jump into the ambulance. They speed off. I stare at my watch, it's 12:01 AM. I need to go with them to the hospital too, jumping into my sports car parked outside, I sped off too.
