Chapter 10 - I laugh in the face of danger!!

Micheal couldn't understand why the mayor decided to be so inconsiderate to him or had he forgotten that he was Micheal, the son of the wealthiest man in the United States. He let out a deep sigh as he strolled out of his office to the parking lot.

Various thoughts as to why the mayor needed him so urgently ran through his head as he went. He hadn't expected a call from him or anyone else within such a time frame.

"Where are you heading to sir?" His secretary asked when she saw him leaving.

"The mayor requires my presence. I'd be back before the close of work sir," he assured and darted off before she had the opportunity to call him back.

He was driving down the road in seconds, slowly nodding his head to a Beyonce song playing in the background.

"You have to leave here immediately ma'am," the jailer said in a firm voice, signalling to the officers to take her out but none were bold enough to do that. They stood transfixed to a spot with their hands clasped to their back.

"And who are you to tell me when I should leave? If I'm right, visiting time isn't over," Diana shot back at him with a bold spirit, one that irritated the jailer so much.

"Fine, you can stay here as long as you wish," he announced and watched a smile form around her lips.

"Take the prisoner away," he ordered in a loud voice. Diana couldn't believe what he had just done.

"I'm not done talking to her. As her lawyer, I request that she stays here with me."

"And as the head of this prison, I order that she be taken away!" He slammed his hand on the table, almost splitting it into two.

Diana looked him in the eye and then burst into a round of laughter.

"Oh, so you think I'm kidding? Would you leave respectable or you'd rather have my men drag you out?"

"You dare not! I repeat, you dare not. How would you like to spend the night in one of the celling with the inmates?" She chuckled, making sure not to take her eyes off him.

"You get out of here immediately!" The jailer yelled with all his might, sending shivers down the spine of the officers standing there.

"What's the noise all about?" A voice Asked suddenly, taking them all by surprise, well except Diana.

The voice was familiar and had an aura of authority anywhere it was heard. It was the mayor with some men walking closely behind him.

"I said what's the problem here?" He asked again as he neared them...

"Good morning sir," the jailer and other officers greeted with a low bow.

"Good afternoon Mr Mayor," Diana greeted and almost immediately went back to their discussion.

"You were saying something about me leaving a few seconds back. What is it Again?"

"I wouldn't ask again. Can someone please explain to me what's going on here? I could hear your Voices right from the prison gate."

"It's miss Diana. She's.. she's.. creating.. a scene.. here," the jailer muttered, stammering uncontrollably.

"And is that true miss Diana?" The mayor turned his gaze in Diana's direction.

"I think you should ask the person who made the claim. Who appears to be creating a scene from the both of us? Obviously, he's the one. It was his voice you heard right?" She responded in a Cool and reserved manner.

"What exactly is the problem miss Diana?" The mayor asked, knowing the only way he could get her to speak without sarcasm was by being calm.

"Thank you. I heard the news of the jailbreak and thought it wise to pay my client a visit, to know how she's faring because I was sure she didn't join them, only for the jailer to deny me access to her."

"And did you deny her access?"

"I didn't directly.. ehmm. I did.." he began to scratch his head in Dismay. He didn't know what to say.

"I need an answer from you and I need it immediately," the mayor Snapped with impatience.

"Yes sir, I did."

"You shouldn't.." the mayor paused a while when he heard some footsteps.

A figure appeared a few seconds later in the person of Michael.

"Hello sir, I'm here," Michael muttered with gaiety but paused abruptly when his gaze fell on Diana.

"What are you doing here?" They chorused in unison, each frown on in disapproval.

"You know each other?" The mayor inquired, staring from Diana to Micheal and then back again.

"Nope!" They chorused again, and the mayor couldn't help but burst into laughter.

"You surely must know each other."

"No, I don't know him from before," Diana said almost immediately, hands akimbo.

"Same too," Micheal responded just after her.

"I guess I'd have to take my leave," Diana murmured, picked her bag from the table and then darted off as fast as her legs could carry her.

"It seems she has a crush on you," the mayor announced, tapping Micheal on the shoulder.

"Excuse me, sir," Michael interrupted, shocked by the mayor's words.

Diana as soon as she was out of the prison premises, stood by a corner to catch her breath. She had walked the long distance from the prison to the gate like she was been pursued and didn't for once pause to catch her breath.

"What was he looking for there?" She asked herself as she flagged a cab down.

"Probably he knew you were there and came to meet you," her mind teased.

"That's not possible. There's no way he could have come to see him even if he knew I was going to be there."

"And how could you be sure? Okay, tell me, if it's not you, then it's who?"

"Most likely he has someone there or he came with the mayor. Didn't you see the shock on his face when he saw me?" She asked but stopped abruptly when she saw people staring at her. She could imagine what they'd be saying in their minds.

"Where to ma'am?" The driver asked as soon as she was seated in the car.

"Home. I just need to get home," she whispered, relaxing her head on the chair.

"And you think I know where you fucking live?" The driver Snapped when he got no more response after almost a minute.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Martins avenue. The eightieth house." She said, feeling ashamed at her stupidity. The car roared to life and was moving along the tarred road at an alarming pace.

She got home a few minutes later and was surprised to see someone standing in her corridor. She wasn't expecting any visitor so couldn't understand why he was there.
