Only in this case, Angels could only wish they were him. He was a god. But he was also a god in need of specific human women that fell within a potential level with the rarest women.
From his relatively short time on earth, he had managed to glean some important statistics on the various levels.
It was disappointing, but a hige chunk of the earth's population were 'ordinary' people. These were at the E or F level. The bottom barrel of empty headed skulls. Either they had lost it at some point in their youth, or with time, their levels had declined due to meddling with the darkness (vices that diminished potential.)
B-level humans were as scarce as unicorns. This made Scarlett an anomaly. Alex determined there and then to have her. He doubled up his game, and actually began to put in effort to scoring this prize.
"So mister Alex, what brings you to this neck of the woods? I most certainly haven't sighted you before. Trust me, I would remember a face like yours."
Alex smiled at the veiled compliment. It was looking like he might not have to do too much. She looked like she was interested.
"Honestly, I came here looking to buy a precious artifact, unfortunately it looks like I got the date wrong. But it looks like I found something- or someone precious along the way."
"You have a really sweet tongue mister Alex. Does that get you whatever you want?"
"You'd be surprised."
"I bet..." she answered in a covertly flirtatous tone. "You said artifact? Does that mean you're here for the auction?"
"Yes. I saw the advert for a very peculiar looking knife, and I knew I just had to have it. I believe it was called 'Cursed Blade' if I remember correctly."
They were standing in a lavishly decorated lobby with fancy chandeliers hanging overhead. So, Alex had been able to catch the dark expression that streaked across her face the moment he mentioned Cursed Blade. Being an astute show business person, she managed to quickly regain her composure.
"But why the Cursed Blade if I may ask? Even the name itself is a little ominous no?"
He chuckled. "I guess it is. But the fact is I want it for personal reasons. Maybe even sentimental reasons. The blade is connected to a friend I once had history with."
He kept his excuse short, concise and with a little detail as possible. But Scarlett was paying attention.
"This friend..." she began cautiously, not wanting to pry. "Is he or her still around?"
"That's a story for another day."
"I see. Well, even though I just met you, you appear to be a really decent person. So, I'm going to tell you this out of the goodness of my heart even though I really should not be saying this."
He drew closer, and leaned in. "Tell me. Please."
Her eyes lingered on him for a moment, partly enjoying the thrill of having him need her, and also searching his eyes for anything that could make her change her mind. She found none.
"You can ask around if you like, but it is rumored that the Cursed Blade is called 'cursed' for a reason."
She allowed that bit of divulged information sink in for a moment before continuing in an ominous tone;
"I have heard tales about it, and they're not all good. The most recent owner died within three years of purchasing it. The same thing with the owner before him, and the owner before him as well." Lowering her gaze directly into his eyes, she asked him; "Do you see where I'm going with this mister Alex?"
He did not speak for close to a quarter of a minute. Just when Scarlett was starting to feel like she had lost him, he spoke up;
"Alex."
"Excuse me?"
"I said it's just 'Alex.' Loose the mister from now on okay?"
Scarlett was caught off guard. "Okay Alex. Please take my advice into consideration and don't bid for that disturbing artifact. I will be happy to hook you up with some more exlusive auctions coming up. But as for this Cursed Blade, so far no one has escaped this 'curse.'"
She spat out that last word like she wanted to get it out of her mouth as soon as possible. And as she did, she tried to read his reaction, but she saw that Alex was not shaken. At least, that was how he looked.
Of course he was not shaken. Of all the people planning to bid for it, only he was aware of the reason for this. Although he could not say for sure, but it was likely that there was some evil spirit occupying the cursed blade. But this was only a slight distraction to him, at best it was simply a minor annoying irregularity. He looked at Scarlett, and saw that she was waiting for him to declare his stand.
But he did not say anything regarding that. Instead he deployed a diversion;
"If it's in the building can you take me to it? I want to see it."
She paused for a minute before nodding in assent. She had not really been expecting him to agree with her right away. In fact, a part of her had been secretly hoping that he would not. She liked the fact that he was not easily swayed from his decision all because a stranger had told him to. That spoke a lot about the kind of person he was, and Scarlett was impressed. She wanted to say a lot of things, but ended up saying;
"Sure, if you insist. Follow me please."
Scarlett led the way. He followed behind closely.
The building itself was actually very impressive. Asides from the sophisticated arhchitecture, the modern interior decor, the attention to detail,and the exquisite furnishing, it was the overral ambience. The venue was built to compell customers to spend their money even if they did not want to. On their way to the showroom, Alex noted that all members of the staff, (both lower and upper management) were incredibly good looking. They all dressed in the finest attires, and looked sharp from every angle.
She stopped at a giant oak door, opened her purse and brought out her card. Even after swiping, the security system demanded a retinal scan of her eye, along with a voice prompt. The tripple factor authentication system was a little over the top, but considering the goods that were locked in, it was not too bad. There were security cameras that covered every angle. And the mean looking security guards were the only members of the staff that did not have the charisma of the others.
The intimidating doors gave way, and revealed an even more intimidating space.
Even the sex god could not help but hold his breath. The open space vaguely resembled the throne room of a cosmic being. The floor itself appeared to be built on an extra large aquarium. Below, mean looking sharks swam in the clear blue waters. The perfect lighting in the waters below filtered through the marble-glass floor, and filled the open space with an iridescent blue light. And it made everything look out of this world.
The room was roughly the size of a basketball court. Magnificient paintings were lodged on the two sides of the way, and they were all equidistant to each other. Mouth watering, priceless artifacts sat majestically in triangular glass prisms that looked like pyramids. They each sat on marble stone slabs that had the appearance of altars.
The architect behind all of this (whoever it was) had done an exquisite job for a a human. Alex's eyes began to rove all over, until he found what he was looking for. It sat in the far end of the north east corner of the showroom, as if the auctioners were trying to distance its badluck from the rest of the other artifacts. Alex took one look at it and knew it was the real deal right away. He had already activated the Eye of god, and he saw that it was actively oozing powerful waves of ominous soul power.
There was no doubting the fact that the blade was now under the ownership of some kind of spirit. Having come so close to obtaining it, Alex was eager to get it and abscond.
