He took the last steps until he stood in front of her, blocking her view. "Everything is prepared for tomorrow," he announced.
She looked ahead as if able to see the skies through him. Bending down in front of her, Benjamin took her resting hand from her lap and squeezed it gently. " I know I promised not to leave soon, but I hope you understand that there is no other way. This is urgent and I'll be back soon, in just a few days. We'll finally have time for ourselves when I return."
"Of course," she answered, still without looking in his eyes, "like we have had until now." She wanted to say more, but felt no energy left to fight or protest in any way.
"Please, don't be mad. I'll make up for it," he pleaded.
A sad small cynical smile formed on her face. "I'll be waiting here, as I have always done. See you in a few days."
He stood up and headed to the door. "Until then, Iris."
