This backpack was a special one he used in the Star Spirit World; it housed several pets such as Little Spider and was used for transportation of the Chocobo, which were usually placed inside.
The backpack could not be opened in different planes. If the Bitter Garden was indeed some sort of discreet space, then the backpack should not open here, and Mu You did not hold out much hope.
