Chapter 17 - Ancient Wand

(Third person POV)

After leaving the majestic halls of Grinngots, the Grandfather-grandson duo went on a shopping spree.

First, they bought potion materials from the apothecary. He didn't buy the standard cauldron from there. As an alchemy apprentice, building a cauldron with basic functions like automatic stirring with adjustable speed, self-heating, and smell-absorbing is just a piece of cake. He bought a set of vials and a brass scale though, though he planned to make some adjustments to the scale.

Then they went to Flourish and Blotts to get the textbooks, some ink, and parchment.

"Give me the full sets of books for 7 years from these subjects," Noah asked the assistant.

"Yo, the first year, aren't you? These books are not that easy, little friend. Are you planning to finish them before school?" The energetic boy with yellow hair said cheerfully. This seemed like a chatter as he didn't wait for the answer and started pointing his wands to various sections one-by-one, shouting "Accio!"

"There was a little girl in the same year as you. She also took the whole set of books. Guess you 2 might be friends at school." He winked at him while wrapping the books. Old man Fredrick (MC's comment: really befitting of his name when he's not overtly excited around me) said nothing from the start till the end. After exiting the shop, he asked:

"Should we go to Madam Malkin's?"

"Yeah, I can alter the clothes later."

After the alchemy course, Noah started making new clothes for himself with basic features like dust-repelling, higher durability, and slight fire resistance. Other functions, such as cooling and warming are a bit advanced for him and he had no time to study that year.

At last, they went to the Ollivander's shop.

Standing in front of the narrow and shabby shop with peeling gold letters over the door read: Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C., Noah sighed:'At last, the legendary shop that I have been waiting to enter for 11 years.'

It is true that he could come before - his old man is too accommodating, it can't be helped. But he wanted to come here on a formal occasion. This day marks the end of his peaceful days. For him, a new period of his life is about to begin.

"Let's enter."

Noah looked around after entering. The shop's display consisted of a solitary wand lying on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window. The shop was tiny and empty except for a single, spindly chair in the corner. Thousands of narrow boxes containing wands were piled right up to the ceiling of the tiny shop, and the whole place had a thin layer of dust about it.

As he sensed a bit of movement, he turned his head to the side. Grey-eyed with grey hair stood in the side.

"You're quite sensitive, my boy. I assume he is your grandson, Mr. Emrys." He beamed at Noah while talking to the man beside him.

"It has been a while, Mr. Ollivander." The old man slightly nodded at him.

"True. It has been a few decades since you last came here, Mr. Emrys. I still remember that day. I had recently started running the shop on my own, and Sir Logan was on the first batch of students who got their wands from my hand. 13 inches, Rowan wood with unicorn hair, slightly stiff. It is best for defensive magic... Young man, let me know your name, and we shall start the parade of wands. I believe you are a picky customer," chuckled Ollivander.

"I'm Noah. Nice to meet you, Mr. Ollivander."

"I'm glad to meet you too, my boy. Let's get started!" with the swish of his grey, old-looking wand(MC's comment: why everything is grey with him?), a tape flew out and started to get the measurements.

"Which hand do you prefer?"

"Right hand."

Getting the answer, Ollivander went to the tiny boxes and started to look for a suitable wand.

"Here, 13 and a half inches, ebony wood with phoenix hair, a bit rigid. Good for combat spells."

Noah took the wand which shot angry sparks. Ollivander grabbed it, saying "not this one".

For 2 and half hours "not this one too" came from the mouth of this old man. Grandfather and grandson had the same blank look on their faces. It's true that they were both amazed when one hour passed without a result as they felt a strong wand might be waiting. But 2 hours is too much. Noah even started thinking that wands didn't want him as he was a transmigrator.

Ollivander didn't seem to be worried, instead, his smile became bigger and bigger. Duo thought that he might be half-bred with a monster as a parent. How can a human open his mouth this big?

After finishing the whole stock, he laughed heartily:

"My dear customer, don't be discouraged. You will certainly get out of this shop with a wand suitable for you. It seems the honor of selling the masterpiece of the Ollivander family belongs to me."

He vanished behind the door at the end of the room.

After a while, he came back with a wooden box. This box's surface was full of strange patterns. He put it on the counter.

"This wand is an ancient heirloom of the Ollivander family. It has been a few centuries since it has been made. But the owner of this wand was not found and my ancestors decided to keep it as an heirloom and wait for the fated person. Come, my boy, let's check if you are the destined one."

Saying so, he opened the box with an exquisite golden key.

There lay a long, slender teal-colored wand. When Noah put his eyes on it, he felt a slight excitement. 'Fate is truly wonderful. I should look into it in the future' amused Noah.

He took the wand from the box. The moment he touched it, white light burst out.
