Chapter 50 - Chapter 49: Being At Odds

The Rawsone Residence, Denver, Colorado...

The man with Dr. Hadrian Rawsone's face paced the household inspecting the place and the vast amounts of documents and photographs. Alexei had taken his leave hours prior but not before informing his lover that he'd been staying at the roadside motel The Windsor. Lonnie Collins had his ideas for how he'd deal with the unwanted relationship with Julia Rawsone, but he knew he needed to gather as much information about the Rawsone household as possible. He had very little time before Hadrian came to his senses and needed all the leverage he could get. It didn't take him long to figure out that Julia was hiding something, as he had seen the initial pictures from the affair in Rawsone's possession before the kidnapping incident.

The damage done to the good doctor's mind was significant enough to offer him wiggle room and once Alexei pushed the envelope via the sexual encounter, Hadrian couldn't take the anxiety and strain and retreated into the deepest recesses of his mind while Lonnie found himself pulled forward after a long sleep since the car accident that had nearly taken his life.

The first time he saw Alexei Bortnik, the lad was wearing a short black silk dress and a long blond wig of sorts. The angry teen was furious that the good doctor had abandoned him in his time of need and moved on to greener pastures. At the time, drugs and fear coursed through both Hadrian Rawsone and Lonnie Collin's veins as they each vied for control. Hadrian eventually relinquished it catapulting Lonnie to the forefront where he was the one to endure all of what the angry Alexei had to dish out.

While he'd been enraged at being held captive, he ended up enjoying the benefits of the unseemly sexual romp with the good doctor's former patient as he had every other unwanted sexual encounter in Hadrian Rawsone's life. The events set in motion an almost obsessive need to have the dopy teen whenever the mood struck him due to Lex's naturally submissive nature and the domineering traits that surfaced in the newly awakened Lonnie.

At the time, Lonnie had no idea that his true existence was tied to that of Dr. Hadrian Rawsone. He had been content with his new lease on life following the near-fatal accident that had cast him a good number of years and eventually held not even a grudge against Alexei as he had enjoyed bedding him whenever he felt the need.

Lonnie sat back in the confines of an armchair in the living room of Hadrian Rawsone's house. He had managed to shower and find something according to his tastes in the good doctor's wardrobe but he had not been impressed with the lifestyle of such a repressed man in the least. Julia had been an average-looking woman by all accounts and not someone that Lonnie even remotely found to be attractive despite the obvious love the couple shared previously.

Sipping on what remained of his umpteenth ice-cold beer, Lonnie sat in the living room and pondered his next move. He had not been alone for long as nightfall brought the arrival of Julia Rawsone who seemed to have looked a bit worse for wear and very much like a woman who had been closely guarding secrets. Lonnie rolled his eyes as she watched her shuffle about in the darkness and attempt to ensure she made no noise as he gathered that she believed him, or rather Hadrian to have been asleep by the time she arrived.

Lonnie Collins was no Hadrian Rawsone and even still, he thought it rather disrespectful of Julia to have been out all night knowing how much her husband had been ailing. While Lonnie had not altogether liked Hadrian, he did not take too kindly to the good man being treated like yesterday's garbage by a woman he had done so much for.

Julia flicked on the light switch and found herself face to face with Hadrian Rawsone and dropped her purse and keys on the spot. Lonnie got up from the chair and simply walked passed her and into the kitchen without a word as he disposed of his empty beer bottle before making his way up the stairs and toward the master bedroom, leaving Julia alone to her pondering and fears downstairs.

The Master Bedroom, The Rawsone Residence, Denver, Colorado...

The sound of the shower running caught Lonnie's ear as he lay in bed with his back turned toward the door blatantly ignoring Julia as she entered unsure of what to do after being caught returning home so late in the evening. Julia got undressed and entered the shower as she thought about the way her husband seemed to look past her. He had not even questioned where she'd been during the late hour, which worked in her favor as she had not been able to come up with a good excuse. She stood beneath the shower head trying to figure out why everything had come down to this.

In the past, Hadrian had been the ideal husband to her and a good father to their twin daughters. He was the kindest man she'd ever met and then some. She recalled all too well the quiet boy with only one friend who had been drawing endlessly beneath an old oak tree at their high school and how sweet he'd been when dealing with her after finding out what Rhett Davis had done to her.

Julia closed her eyes as she imagined the handsome young man who had been her source of strength and encouragement since they were in high school. She recalled how he woke up the moment the twins cried to change diapers and feed them bottles while she recovered following giving birth. She did not doubt that Hadrian would have been an amazing father to their third child and had he lived, he would be the boy her husband always wanted.

He never complained about being in a house full of women, but she could tell that some things she experienced with the girls he was left out on due to not having a true understanding of it. He was ecstatic when his attempt at a romantic interlude with the girls having gone off to college led to the news that she'd been pregnant a second time.

"Jules..." he had said looking as elated as he had been the day he found out about her pregnancy with the girls.

Tears streamed down Julia's cheeks as she stood beneath the shower head as the memories of what her life with Hadrian had been like before and what everything had become since his disappearance battled in her mind. She blamed herself for the outcome, she'd been so concerned with her grief that she ignored his and eventually began to resent him altogether.

"How did we get here?" she asked more so to herself than anything.

After her shower, Julia climbed out and ventured toward the bedroom where she got dressed and climbed into bed beside the still-slumbering Hadrian. The moment he felt the dip in the bed, he opened his eyes and moved to wrap his arms around Julia who had still been in tears as she attempted to accept what life had become as of late.

"Jules..." said Hadrian concerned as he sat up in bed. "Are you alright?"

Julia took note of the man she recalled for so long being right before her eyes as more tears came pouring out of her.

"Did you have a bad dream?" asked Hadrian with an arched brow as he wrapped his arms around her.

She nearly crumbled with how good he was being to her knowing what she had done behind his back a few short hours prior.

Hadrian gently kissed her on top of the forehead and held her close.

"You're trembling," he observed. "H-how about I make you some tea for your nerves?"

"I...I just want you to hold me Dren," she said softly. "Just that."

"Okay," replied Hadrian doing as she requested. "I know things haven't been easy for us as of late...and I apologize for any issues or inconvenience on my part, but I hope you know just how much I love you."

This made Julia all the more saddened as she had known exactly how much Hadrian Rawsone had loved her. The problem was, she no longer knew how much she loved him, if at all. Leaving him wasn't an option as many questions and the possibility of causing something to go awry with his current ailing condition loomed on the horizon.
