Chapter 39 - Chapter 38: When Given To Madness

Roadside Motel, Unknown Location.....

Numerous photos lined the still freshly made bed of the motel room as Lex paced the floor, a bottle of whiskey clasped between his pale fingers, and the stream of smoke that fled his nostrils after he exhaled was visible to anyone who entered. He'd been a wreck of nerves and sadness. He pined for his lover in more ways than one as he found himself crashing into an armchair with the pistol he'd gotten from the robbery on his lap and his eyes narrowed at the photographs of a woman and a man standing amid the vast and open road their cars parked on the side and their little chat being engaged.

Rage began to fill the heart of the milky white blond young man as he looked at some older photos taken of the same couple, but in compromising positions in various establishments. He'd been following these two for quite a while and it never ceased to amaze him just how brazen these fools had been when engaging in their affair. It was clear that they didn't know they were being watched and that if they had been they had not a care in the world at the time.

The Bitch and her lover.

It was always The Bitch and Her Lover.

Lex could do little as his blood boiled and the cigarette began to burn out. He had hated these people and he had especially hated the whore who had the man he loved captive in her false lifestyle when she so clearly wished to be free of him.

He knew her name.

It was plastered across the news stations for months, her public pleas for the safe return of her husband had been unanswered by those who had known about them. Mostly due to the very person responsible for it not caring in the least how she felt about his absence.

She didn't deserve him.

Three Months of her false tears and she'd gotten him back only to once again find herself seeking out her lover. It made Lex sick to his core to know that the man he loved was once more a captive to the whore who had not loved him.

He made up his mind, right then and there that she would not win this time. He would do anything and everything in his power to have Lonnie back where he belonged and there was nothing the cheating whore could do about it.

Lex smashed the empty glass he'd been nursing against the nearby wall.

He had missed Lonnie something fierce for over two months and it was beginning to eat away at him. Had Lonnie not been shot, he would have been with him and only him. Alas, the people responsible got what was coming to them. As much as Lex's grandparents had in that fire and just like the whore who had taken it upon herself to steal Lonnie away would get hers.

The Bortnik Residence, Unknown City, Unknown State.....

One slap too many saw a teary-eyed fourteen-year-old Alexei Bortnik shuffling off to his makeshift bedroom without finishing his meal as his grandfather had ordered a few moments prior. The old man was always callous and cold when it came to the boy, never wanting him in the first place because of who his father was and wanting him even less after finding out that he'd been given a birth defect that would follow him for the rest of his existence. He wore clothes that were outdated and his bowl haircut had not done him any favors when it came to his already being disadvantaged in school due to his small size and lack of understanding of some grammar subjects.

Alexei had had enough of sitting alone in the dark with his face stinging after the resounding slap from his grandfather's old and calloused hand. Tears streamed down his milk-colored cheeks as he sat in the dark stewing over the confrontation like so many times before when he'd been struck or insulted just for the unpleasant experience of being alive. It wasn't enough that his mother had died of some illness he couldn't pronounce or that his father had bailed on him after contributing nothing short of abuse during his formative years, but here he was with his maternal grandparents and subjected to neglect and abuse all over again for the simple crime of being born with a birth defect that ensured his sexual reproductive organs were unlike any other child born on earth.

When he was younger, his mother explained the ordeal. She'd been working around chemicals as a cleaner, that altered her eggs making only one viable after the stuff was inhaled over several consistent years. She would have been barren if not for one egg being partially affected and it was from that egg that Alexei was formed intersex but alive. His grandparents considered him an abomination, his grandfather more so than his grandmother but she followed her husband and his commands.

Fed up with the treatment he was receiving, Alexei set about pouring his slumbering grandfather's boose about the place and struck a match from his matchbook carried about for his cigarettes. His hands had even trembled as he held the match and stared into the flame. Only for a moment did he hesitate and after that the reminder of his stinging face amplified his rage and caused him to act without thought to what he was truly attempting to do. From what he could recall, it had all been a blur and then he was sent to live in the mental hospital.

The smoke and flames engulfing the apartment lingered in his memory as he made his way back to his makeshift room and lay back on the bed. He had fully intended on going out in the blaze alongside them, but the rescue workers had other ideas pulling him out amid the smoke and collapsing building before it all caved in. There were no other survivors as Alexei's grandparents were the only ones fool enough to remain inside after the blaze got going and died from both smoke inhalation and the flames.

He recalled the dark eyes of a newly arrived doctor being the last thing he remembered before everything changed and he met Lonnie.

Roadside Motel, Unknown Location.....

The gun Lex had taken from Lonnie had been sitting beside him, a blood-splattered hooded sweatshirt was packed into a bag along with white sneakers that were ruined via blood as well. From the news reports, no one had been any the wiser about what truly took place between him and the would-be robbers who had managed to escape prison after nearly killing Lonnie. At the time, Lex had been so consumed by grief and rage that he thought of nothing else aside from vengeance and his memories of Lonnie only seemed to intensify.

Now that his vengeance against those bastards had been complete, he set his sights on a new target. Once more his cold blue eyes stared at the photographs he'd taken rather recently as the image of the woman Julia Rawsone seemed to burn itself into his mind.

{"What are you up to Lex?"} asked the voice of Lonnie in his mind as the begrieved young man sat alone in the darkness of his motel room recalling the events of the past few days.

"I'm bringing you home, Lonnie," replied Lex seemingly engrossed in the shadows of his memory while he picked up the gun and held it into view.
