The clock was ticking, and the sun was gradually retiring. I was half asleep when my alarm went off (I ensure to not oversleep and get a proper power nap). I freshened up and headed to a nearby local store to buy new clothes for 'Tomorrow's Big Day'. To my dismay, I couldn't find a suitable outfit. So, I headed to a branded outlet, which was not far. As I pushed the door, I found Varsha. For a few moments I stood there contemplating the scenario. She turned around and, like a lightening, recognized me.
"Hey Arun!" She said loudly. I squirmed.
"Hey. Did not expect to see you here." I spoke
"Me too. Did you buy your clothes?"
"No. That's why I'm here"
"Oh, that's awesome! Let's shop together."
Ultimately, we ended up spending five hours shopping. We probably checked through each and every item. I had already selected my suit and formal pants with matching colors. Varsha was changing in the room.
"When is your date?" the shopkeeper asked
"Tomorrow" I replied with a sigh.
"I can understand. My date was much more intense. By the way, your girlfriend's cute."
"Yeah." I agreed at first, "My girlfriend? She is not my girlfriend"
He was baffled, like anyone would be, and I was in no mood to explain. Our half-broken conversation became awkward.
We were at the billing counter. Varsha was explaining her choice of dress, and I began spacing out (daydreaming). I held my wallet in my hand, ready to pay.
"Grand total is Rs. 8,700." He spoke. My eyes were wide open. 8,700! I have never seen that much cash in my life.
"What?"
"It's 8,700." He said softly, feeling petty at my staggered expression.
"I'll pay," said Varsha
"No. I'll pay," I said and looked at the shopkeeper, "Do you accept UPI?"
"Yes sir."
I made the payment, dropped Varsha at her home like a gentleman, and headed home to retire for the day.
