Desmond arrived home late that day. His eyes were drooping. His body movements were sluggish. His exhaustion was clear as day. Yet the surprise he got on arriving at the mansion made him forget about his body and forget about the tiredness. He saw Gloria relaxing with both feet up on the sitting room couch and Sam sitting on one of the other chairs in the room reading a novel.
His jaw dropped as he tried to understand the scene before him. He took a step back to take a good look at the woman's face who was now smiling as she noticed his presence. It was the face of Sam's mother. But what was she doing in his sitting room and why was she so casual in another person's house?
Sam also just noticed Desmond. She was too indulged in her books to notice when he first came. Her concentration was commendable but Desmond wished she could use the concentration for other useful things. Desmond tried to speak but Sam interrupted him.
