"I am so sorry," Hazel repeated. Her eyes had become glassy from holding back the tears that threatened to spill. She didn't know what else to say to him. She could not find the right words even when she opened her mouth to speak. Just the thought of him watching as his mother died broke her. How much more was it for him?
"Hazel," he called, pulling her into his arms. He didn't tell her this so she would feel bad and start thinking too much about it. He thought about everything he said and could not tell what made her like this, holding back her tears. He did not want to see her shed a tear, not for anyone. Not even for him. "That is alright, it is all in the past. A past that many have forgotten," he said, wrapping his hands around her in a warm embrace as he tried to calm her.
