Chapter 11 - Late

*brrr* *brrr* *brrr*

'What's that noise?'

*Brrr* *Brrr* *Brrr*

'It's so annoying!"

*BRRR* *BRRR* *BRRR*

"Shut up, already!" I shouted as jumped up from my bed. I frantically looked around for the source of the noise to realise it was just my phone.

I grabbed it and checked the time, the clock displayed '8:32' on my lock screen.

"It's only half eight. I can probably go back to bed for a bit."

I curled back underneath my blanket and tried to regain the warmth I had lost. I was about to re-enter my dreams before I had a sudden realisation.

'Shit! It's the first day!'

I once again leapt from my bed, but this time I immediately started getting changed into my school uniform.

"Fuck! I cannot be late on the first day." I quickly shoved on any piece of my uniform I could find, not caring if it looked unkept or not.

'Ok, calm down Kate. You have less than half an hour to get there on time and the walk is at least forty minutes from here. I'm going to have to run.' I tried to calm myself down as I rushed down the stairs.

I didn't have any time for any proper breakfast, so I just grabbed a piece of bread and shoved it into my mouth.

Once I got outside I began to stretch and do a few exercises for the run. "Just like I practised. I just need to do it the first time."

I was attempting to transform into a wolf because I knew I could run faster as one. During my practice, I found out that I would transform easier when my was heart beating rapidly. My current method was taking a running start and then transforming, but the only problem is that if I fail then I fall flat on my face. So far I have never pulled it off first try, but it's never too late for a miracle.

After I felt my body fully acclimated to being awake and active, I started running. I didn't try to pace myself because I knew the faster I went the quicker my heart would beat. I ran for a full minute before I attempted to transform and I leapt into a position where I would land on all fours.

Unsurprisingly my still human face was hugging the ground. It was lucky that I had chosen to run on the grass instead of the stone path.

I got back up and continued my sprint not wanting to waste any more time than I had already. I kicked the ground as hard as I could and I angled myself closer to the ground so my conversion would be more seamless.

I took another leap, and this time I landed on the ground with four legs. I wanted to shout "Fuck Yeah!" but it came out as an excited bark.

I kept charging ahead not wanting to lose the momentum I had gained. I was nearly twice as fast as I was on two feet, and the freedom I felt as I bolted through the trees and wildlife was indescribable.

The school came into my field of vision after a few minutes of using my legs to their full ability. I saw a group of over a hundred people wearing the same uniform as me, so I guessed that they were the group I was supposed to be with.

I could hear their voices, but I couldn't make out what anyone of them was saying. I continued to race down the path to the school hoping to get there before the exam started.

"Settle down students. The exam will start in a few minutes." I heard one of the teachers call over the noise of the students.

'Thank god, I didn't miss it.' I thought as I neared the group of students. Before I joined them I decided to hide behind a tree and transform back into a human. Everyone else was in a human form, so I thought it might be rude to be the only animal.

Was I finished transforming, I joined the amalgamation of students trying not to stand out. The last thing I want is to gain a reputation as I did in my last school. Especially since Blue said passing was the only way to leave the island.

"Could Kate Carter please come here? Please can you settle down students, I need Kate Carter to come forward." A teacher called out, but she was droned out by the talking of the students. She had white rabbit ears and was rather small.

"Silence!" The teacher next to her yelled. He was much taller and his muscular arms were covered in hair. "Will the wolf girl come forward?"

When I heard the teacher yell wolf girl I looked around to see if there were any other wolves, but all the students started murmuring.

"A wolf? Is he joking?"

"I thought all the wolves were dead?"

"Is there really a wolf here?"

I began to panic. 'Are they talking about me? The first day hasn't even started and shits hit the fan.'

The rabbit lady made a loud cough. "Will Kate Carter, please come here?"

As she said those words I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. I knew I couldn't keep quiet and I also knew I didn't want to step forward. After an internal battle with myself to go or not, I decided to just do it and get it over with.

"I'm Kate Carter." I said to the teacher sheepishly.

"Ahh, there you are Kate. Will you please follow me?" She said looking at me with a smile.

"Why won't I be taking the exam with the others?"

"No, no, no. The exam is to determine what classes everyone will be placed in. Your class has already been predetermined, so there is no need for an exam."

"Oh ok."

I wanted to learn more from the rabbit lady, but she had already begun walking away, so I had no choice but to follow.

"Why has my class been predetermined?" I asked as she walked through the building.

"A lot of varying factors are the reason for you being chosen and you will be made aware of them shortly."

I followed the teacher to the third floor of the building. From the outside, the building looked ancient, but it was actually quite modern on the inside. We stopped outside a door that read 'Year 1 Omega Class'.

"Alright, this is your classroom. Head on inside and your teacher should be here any minute." The rabbit teacher walked away leaving me slightly dazed.

I decided not to dwell on it for too long and opened the classroom door. With my first step, I felt something squishy and soft underneath my foot.

"Oww! Be careful where you step." I heard a feminine voice yell. I looked down to see that I had stepped on a ginormous purple snake tail. I followed the tail back to its origin which was a woman who had a snake's tail below her waist instead of legs. Her ears, nose and lips were all pierced and her hair was dyed purple to match her tail.

"It's rude to stare, honey?" She said when she caught me staring at her.

"Sorry." I apologised quickly and headed to the back of the classroom. I sat on the seat in the back corner of the classroom furthest away from the door and the teacher's desk.

I had walked to the back not making eye contact with any of the other students. I hated this kind of awkward situation and I was trying to remain as calm as possible. Once I sat down I looked up to see who was sitting next to me, and a familiar pair of black and orange ears greeted me.

It was the mysterious cat boy who I had chased up a tree. He was looking at me shaking and sweating profusely. I could tell he was scared of me.

I wanted to yell "It's you!" but I stopped myself knowing that would only make the situation worse.

"I'm sorry for chasing you up a tree and barking at you?" I said to him quietly, so that the others in the class couldn't hear.

He flinched when he first heard me, but then when he understood I was apologising he just shyly turned away. I couldn't tell what kind of face he was making, but his human set of ears was bright red.

I wanted to talk to the cat boy some more and learn more about him, but before the words left my mouth the door slammed open.

"My name is Mr Woods." A man with antlers protruding from his head walked into the classroom. "I am your homeroom and magical studies teacher for the foreseeable future."

He began to write on the chalkboard at the front of the class as he spoke.

"Now you all may be wondering why you aren't partaking in the exam downstairs. The reason is simple, you have all been chosen to be separated from the other students for their and your own safety. I'm sure I don't explain why that is the case."

'Please explain why!!!'
