Chapter 1 - Introduction

No one saw it coming, none could explain why it happened and possibly, the sudden occurrence of that night would forever remain unsolved.

Nevertheless, this event brought about the change of the world as all knew it… one century ago, there had been a meteor shower unlike any ever recorded in the history of mankind. Not only were these meteorites as big as comets, but they crashed on different parts of the globe like boulders, destroying homes, people, while making medium sized craters into the ground. Each meteor was oval in structure, resembling an unhatched egg of a Dinosaur that, upon contact with the Earth's soil had shattered like thin glass, and from its center, an unfamiliar grey vapor launched into the air, going higher and higher, until it reached the clouds. Not long after, rain poured heavily all over the planet, but its texture was off, for it felt like powder and looked glossy. Despite being harmless to humans, they all ran for the hills once they noticed the rain drops were too thick. In less than half an hour, the streets were void of men, women or children; even the mad ones had been sane enough to shelter themselves.

But what none could've guessed, was that this mysterious rainfall was radioactive to animals of all species and age. It was so toxic in fact that within an hour of exposure to the rain, the animals went mad with agony and ran about, growling and howling as their bodies went through abrupt changes. This mutation even went as far as merging different species together to make one, giving special aptitudes to some and dangerous abilities to others. The men who were able to watch the alteration of these poor creatures, recoiled in fear, terrorized by the animal's unholy new forms.

In the morning that followed this incident, the people remained in their homes and waited for the law enforcers sent by the Chiefs and Rulers of the land to take control of the situation. For some reason, all the farm animals and rodents that mutated were docile creatures, despite some being unpleasant to the human eye, but the strays on the other hand were vicious, spiteful monsters. No longer did they run after rats or left overs. However the rain had changed their morphology, it had also changed their digestive system so that now, they craved human flesh. That day, had been the first amongst many where brave knights and guards had died by the hands of these mutated beasts; for it was how they were called.

But after some time, as the years passed, humans began to triumph over these mutations, those that could prove useful were caged and kept somewhere secret. Scholars, after years of study, even managed to develop tools capable of taming them, giving these specialists the name of Beasts Tamers, as well as high ranks alongside those of nobles. With these Tamers working together with the Knights, Beast hunting became fruitful, at such a rate that Wild Mutated Beasts went into hiding, but the tamed ones were able to coexist peacefully with mankind.

Several years after that, mutated Beasts were no longer seen as threats, but as opportunities. Those who were greedy but cunning (mostly the nobles), started to think, if they could own powerful beasts with special skills, they could enrich themselves some more, or gain a higher status in the Monarchy. From then on, it became a race between the nobles and the rich, to hire Tamers who could bring them Beasts they could use to wage war, in order to gain more territory. This brought greater prestige to the Beasts Tamer name, and the very best even got to work for the Kings and Queens of different Kingdoms. Competition also grew all over the world, when the common people too dreamt of being aspiring Beast Tamers. Guilds specializing in everything 'Beast' opened, Tournaments for the Title of Best Tamer became annual events to look forward to. Some even managed to make small business on the back of the beasts they captured.

From that point on, everything revolved around Beasts and those that studied or used them. It's for that reason, the planet was no longer called Earth, but Wilderbeast instead, which meant Land of the Mutated Beasts. And like all the orphans who were born with nothing, Sage Black dreamt of being the greatest Beast Tamer that ever lived, which explained why, he was impatient to receive his first Beast from the village chief himself. Unfortunately for him, everything went south from there.
