Chapter 1 - The war year

This hands will worship and Adore you , this hands will love you everyday , Darling the only garantee I can give this hands won't let your heart break, that was the music playing on the radio this is the 80's listen to every lyrics of the song and tears drip down my eyes. my mind travelled back in time to the 70's. it was the civil war in my country Nigeria as a child I could hear the sound of shooting and people shouting and crying at the same time, women were wailing , doors are been kicked and opened, houses were burnt down families were killed , I was afraid that the war lord will get to our house because my father was a prominent man in our village , he had helped so many people to get to greatness in their chosen career. he loved education and have been able to sponsor children that are intelligent and parents are poor to further their education. our house was a mansion at that time . it was built by the white men who are engineer and my father met them on one of his trips to Lagos , he invited them to our village to built the house we are living . they built an underground passage it is hidden from the main building and a well ventilated rooms where built there. when the became war became strong in the internal land my father took us his immediate family and few of is relations that where around to the safe heaven. there was light, food and enough water as if he knew that there will be war. nobody knew where we are many would have taught we escaped to Lagos where the war have not gotten. days , months have gone by but there was no news if the war have ended . my father chief Michael goes out in the night to search for news of the war and if the government is doing something about but there was no good news . what a life you have money but you cannot do any thing with your money. at this time your wealth can not buy you food and water on the table. the little we had we had to managed it because you don't know when the war will end . I closed my eyes and opened it again it was another time and place. My father chief Michael is no longer with us. we lost him during the war . he was shot and later bled to death because we could not stop the bleeding . many years have passed, I grew up beautiful, tall and slim there was not much fat on my body, I was one of the fairness of all maiden in Onitsha. my mother took care of me and brothers, she built a protective shield around us not wanting any harm to come to us. until I came of age. I was 18 years old when my mother Theresa came into my room to discuss an important issue that have been boring her for days now. good evening mama , good evening dear , how was your day? fine ma , I hope am safe mama , is anything the matter mama? hmmm she let out some air and laugh , she looked at me and said there is no problem. I wanted us to discuss an issue that was brought to my notice. do you know the man they call Richard that lives at the end of the street beside that supermarket. yes mama , what about him, what can you say about him you know I don't go out and you young children see everything around you, oh his that why you want us to discuss, yes Nicole , hmmm mama since you want to know about him I can only tell you what people say about him. I heard he is very handsome, tall , gentle , is face is like that of an Angel, my friends do talk about they say he is every woman dream for a husband and he is rich he has ego , money everywhere is house I heard was built in gold. well my daughter the reasoning am asking you this question is because he came to ask me for your hand in marriage and I asked him to wait until I discuss it with you. but mother am just 18 years, what do I know about marriage, how can I marry a man that is 15 years older than me, mother you know it's not possible , where will I start from I don't even like not to say love him . I don't know much about him where he comes from and the people he relate with. why me ? mother . so Nicole what you are telling me right now is that you won't marry this man because of love , my dear love will find its way. age , age is nothing but a number when I married your father God bless is soul ,I was just 16 years old. my daughter I won't force you to marry him, I will leave you to make your decision but know this it is an opportunity of a life time that many maiden out there we not put away . better still why not meet him and get to know him for now before taking your final discission OK ma I will think about it.
