Chapter 11 - Chapter Eleven

I got to my house with a beaming face like I was gazing at stars all day. Mother was already doing perfecta and as such this gave me lot of happiness. I told her that I had a dinner to meet that day and she told me that mother to son stuff. I just smiled ceaselessly and she asked me not to blow this like I did with Beauty.

After having a shower, I went to my ward robe and took a necklace which I intended to give to Beauty but since we were not together anyways, I wanted to give it to Jessica, I left my house for the dinner with a suit jacket; the weather was so cold anyways. I sat there for about ten minutes before Jessica arrived. She looked as spectacular as ever and this made me to gaze at her endlessly. After we ordered fish and chips, we started to talk. She spoke about her day at work and I told her about mine too.

Few minutes into dinner, I brought out the necklace and gave it to her to wear on her neck but there was this reluctance on her face. I was bothered and asked her why she did not want it. She told me that the one on her neck is so special to her; she had not taken it off for the past ten years. I was shocked and I asked her to tell me about the necklace. She told me that she did not want to talk about it because it always brought back painful memories.

I felt guilty when I saw the sorrow in her once smiling face. She tried to pretend that all was fine but I knew that all was not fine. I asked her if I could see the necklace on her neck and she brought it out. I was shocked but I tried to hide it; her necklace was exactly like the one that I had at home. I told her to keep the necklace that I brought for her and she did this and thanked me for it.

When we finished with the dinner, she told me that she liked it and would love to have it some other time and I concurred. When I got home, I went to my wardrobe to find my own necklace and to my greatest surprise, it was the same thing. I was too shocked to keep mute and out of curiosity, I went to ask my mother about the necklace. My mother told me that I bought two pieces of the necklace about ten years ago. I did not tell her why I asked, but I was bothered the more. If I had bought two pieces, where was the other one and how come Jessica has the same type?

After several minutes of unfruitful worry, I decided to sleep it over. The next morning, before I had breakfast, Jessica's call came into my phone. I picked it up and she told me thank you for the dinner the previous day. I told her not to bother and she asked if we could have dinner again that day. I saw this as an opportunity to get answers to my questions, so I agreed.

Work was quite hectic that day, we had two general meetings called in one day, but I had given Jessica my word and I could not turn her down. I took a shower and had a brief nap before preparing for the dinner. I got to the venue of the dinner and this time, I met Jessica already seated. Her first words marvelled me. She said that as usual, I came late again. I was surprised and confused at the same time but I asked her no question about this. We had dinner and I asked her how she got the necklace.

She told me that she had a boyfriend when she was seventeen years old and that they dated for about two years and that they were truly in love with each other and they had the consent of their parents. She said that the guy gave her the necklace as a sign of his love for her and as a promise; not to leave her until they eventually get married. I put up a serious look when hearing her speak but I saw this story as none on my business anyways. She told me that the guy had a fatal accident that put an end to their relationship on their anniversary. In curiousity, I asked her what anniversary she was talking about. She said that it was two years that day since they had been dating. I felt pity for her and rubbed her back softly.

I asked her what happened to the guy after the accident and she said that the guy lost his memory and forgot totally about her. In sympathy for her, I asked her if she still loved the guy and she said that she has never stopped loving him. This somehow poked my feelings, realising that the girl whom I newly loved was in love with another guy. I comforted her and considered my own necklace as a mere co-incidence. I wrestled with sleeplessness that night to no avail; I could not just get to sleep. I was playing with my necklace all night and decided to put it on my neck. Her story just left me disturbed and I wondered who the guy could have been.
