Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: A Complicated Spark

Lyra

Eleni's words had really stuck in Lyra's brain as they maneuvered through the stack of books on the desk. It was getting harder and harder to concentrate on the words in front of her, but she flipped through the pages aimlessly. How could Lyra know anything or have any connections to constellations, let alone a god himself. It made no sense to her, and the more she thought about it, the more her brain started to hurt. Sure, she discovered that she had an ability beyond what she could have ever comprehended before this, but how did that tie into this prophecy? Was she the one meant to find Atlas' daughter? Where could she even begin to look? It wasn't like they had a map or anything. All they had to go on was Lyra's book, and hopefully whatever information they could gain from this upcoming visit to the coven.

On top of that, they also had Thyrius' enemies to deal with, and the fact that Caeso was continuing to turn these poor creatures into ferals. Lyra's heart ached for them, and especially for the ones that had died at her hands. She never meant to cause harm to any living thing, and the fact that moving forward that was something unavoidable. With a final sigh, she closed the book in front of her and saw that Eleni was still lost in her own sea of words written on the soft paper in front of her. She wanted desperately to talk things out with Thyrius, and understand why he had such a visceral reaction to her training session with Gus, but she didn't even know where to start with that either. It seemed like no matter what she did, there was always some important conversation to have, and she was just tired from it all. She wanted to escape, to be alone for just a fraction of a moment before she went off to visit this coven. Lyra let out a low breath and raised her arms above her head in a clumsy stretch before she turned to face Eleni once more. "I think I'm going to go take a nap, Eleni. I don't feel very well." Was all that she could manage to think of. She was hoping that the girl would be too engrossed in her book to push further, and was relieved when the perky blonde answered her with a stiff nodd.

With that confirmation, she got up from her seat and made her way to the exit of the library. She had her fill of excitement and information for the morning, and she wanted to take some time for herself, not necessarily to nap, but to just enjoy her own company. The library's quiet atmosphere made her footsteps echo as she reached the double doors. She peered over her shoulder one last time to make sure that Eleni was still engrossed in her book, and when she saw that she was, she made a haste exit.

The walk to the pack house was comforting alone, and it gave her time to think about all of the events that led to this moment. Her conversations with Mama Jan, her tiffs with Ms Hitridge, and even her time spent with Dr. Roland all played a part in getting her to this place. Yet, now that she thought more about it, why was she sent to Mooretown in the first place. Ms Hitridge never gave her an inkling of who her parents were, and she made it her life's mission to make Lyra's life miserable. Was there a possibility that the hag had a play in her destiny, too?

The same went for Dr. Roland. She was the one who handed her the envelope that changed the entire course of Lyra's life. She was the one who initially saw the person who delivered the envelope. Could she have some answers as to who this person was? Or where this person could have gone? She needed to get into contact with them again. She missed Mama Jan, and to be honest, Lyra was quite overdue for a visit anyway. She would drop by after she and Gus met with the coven. It was close enough that she could sneak away, if she took one of the SUVs, and she would be back before Gus could inform Thyrius.

It wasn't that she didn't want to tell them what she was going to do, she just didn't want to have to go through the hassle of getting everyone on board with her decision. She also just wanted to go alone. This was something she needed to do herself, because if Hitridge actually had a hand in this, there would undeniably be a screaming match. Thryius, nor Gus needed to witness the years of pent up rage Lyra felt for the woman. And if Dr. Roland also had a hand, then the utter betrayal would ultimately lead to ugly tears.

She entered her and Thryius' room and shut the door tightly before rummaging through her bag for her tarot cards. Even though she had made her mind up about this, she wanted some clarification and advice on how to go about that. Her spirit guides would definitely be able to help her more than her scrambled brain could in that moment. Shuffling the deck, Lyra opened her mind and her spirit to any messages that would be communicated through the cards. She took three deep breaths, grounding herself, encircling herself with protection and positivity before drawing three cards from the deck. She chose to do a smaller spread because she wanted the energy in this reading to be more direct. Lyra was becoming exhausted with all of the open ended questions in her mind, and wanted a clear path to guide her through this.

She was bewildered when she pulled the seven of cups, the ace of cups and the five of cups. All pertained to the emotional aspect of one's life, and from this reading, this particular decision would ultimately lead to the uncovering of truths, lies, and introspective healing. She gazed deeper into the symbolic imagery of the cars, and to her surprise, they started to dance off of the cards and into the air.

In utter shock and awe, she only watched as the images danced off the cards and swirled around her. Nothing like this had ever happened during a reading, and she had no clue what to do. Cups of gold, lined with jewels floated in front of her eyes, while vines tangled around them. The Floral designs that edged the cards were encompassing the area around her, and sparks were spewing from the now blank cards lying on the ground. Lyra began to feel dizzy, weakened, and with her brain on autopilot, she felt her body being pulled towards the floor.

"Lyra" The woman's voice whispered in the distance. The floor under her was decorated with wildflowers, and tall grass. The sky wasn't stormy or raining, but a clear and crystal blue. They reminded her of Thyrius' wolf. There wasn't a cloud in sight, not a tree, and not even a whisper of wind. Just sky, and a field of wildflowers.

"Lyra" She heard the voice again, only this time, directly behind her. Lyra whipped around, nearly bumping noses with the woman. A tall, celestial-like woman, with a light blue robe encasing her goddess-like frame. Lyra could only marvel at the beauty standing in front of her. "Who are you? Where am I?" She wasn't scared, she was only confused. She wanted answers, and this was the same woman whom she had heard many times before. "Lyra, darling, I have told you who I am. I am you. You are me. We are one in the same. You seem to have woken, yet by your absurd questions, you are not truly awake? How can that be? That wasn't part of our destiny." The woman spoke with curiosity, and Lyra could sense a pang of hurt in the gorgeous woman's voice.

Her words only confused Lyra more. What did she mean she wasn't awake? When she went to ask another question, both women heard a loud, vicious snarl from behind. The woman opened her mouth in shock, and Lyra whipped her head around to see a wolf. Eyes blood red, and foam dripping from its mouth. "How…is that possible?! They cannot enter this realm!" The woman shrieked as the monster shot through the air towards them. Lyra let out a strangled scream and lifted her arms out in front of her.

Beams of light shot from her palms, incinerating the creature in front of them. This time it only slowed the feral wolf, plummeting it to the ground. Its howls were gut wrenching, and the fear that her ability did not stop it, froze Lyra in her place. The feral creature burst into a sprint, getting closer and closer to the women. "What do we do? How do we kill it?! I'm freaking out here!" Lyra screamed to her, pleading with her to help. The creature bounded into the air once more, and the woman shrieked again, and Lyra saw sparks flying out over her head from behind. They were different from hers, more spread out, and in smaller flakes. Almost as if literal stars were emerging from her palms. The creature disintegrated almost instantly. Each of the women closed their eyes and blew out a sigh of relief.

When Lyra turned around to question the woman once more, she had vanished. There was no trace of her, nor of the feral monster that tried to eliminate them.
