Chapter 26 - You Don’t Bark Back at Barking Dogs

The two of them walked over to Jynx and Arthur with hostile expressions.

At this moment, Jynx was introducing various delicacies to Arthur and the differences in food and drink between Cantero City and the capital.

Grott was the first to approach Arthur. He stood beside Arthur and interrupted his conversation with Jynx. "Beautiful Jynx, you really are like a bright pearl at this banquet tonight. I'm sure that anyone who sees you will be stunned by your beauty."

As he spoke, he extended his hand and made an inviting gesture. "If i can dance with a beautiful pearl like you, it would be the biggest blessing for me."

Jynx looked at the boy who suddenly came over and wanted to dance with her, frowning impatiently. "Grott, thank you for your invitation, but I don't have any intention of dancing."

Then, she tried to pull Arthur to another place. She wanted to stay away from this person who made her feel uncomfortable.

Ferguson also came over from the other side. He blocked Jynx and Arthur's path, and his mouth's corners curled slightly. He looked at Arthur with a dark expression and said, "Sir, my name is Ferguson, a friend of Miss Jynx."

"I don't think I've seen you around here before. May I ask your name?"

When Ferguson approached, his silver hair was already close to Arthur's cheek. In his gloomy eyes, there was no doubt that his gaze was unfriendly.

Looking at Ferguson, Arthur frowned and said, "My name is Arthur, and I'm from Huska. I just met Jynx this afternoon, so it's normal that you don't know me."

When Ferguson realized Arthur wasn't a noble and came from a remote town, he smiled and said to Jynx, "Miss Jynx, you're a noble, and you're the most dazzling pearl at tonight's reception. Everyone's eyes are on you. In contrast, Sir Arthur is a commoner from outside this city. Therefore, you should stay away from this country bumpkin, otherwise it'll damage your noble image."

Ferguson's voice didn't sound like it was meant for a conversation. His voice was booming, and almost everyone around him heard his words. Many nobles looked over, and Grott, who was rejected, leaned to the side.

In a surprised tone, he said loudly, "Aiya, I was wondering where this uncouth kid came from. So you're a commoner from the countryside."

As soon as Grott finished speaking, many noble children around him laughed loudly.

"Look, the way he's holding the wine glass! Hahaha... Does he think he's holding a sword? He shouldn't even be gripping a sword that hard!"

"What a country bumpkin! He wants to covet Miss Jynx without knowing any noble etiquette? That's ridiculous."

A group of people gathered around.

"Do you guys think this country bumpkin sneaked in? No one invited him."

"We should check his invitation. If he doesn't have it, we should throw him out."

Under the deliberate guidance of Grott and Ferguson, many people frowned at Arthur and spoke ill of him.

Jynx heard the voices around her grow louder, as well as the smug looks in Grott and Ferguson's eyes. How could she not understand that the two were trying to embarrass Arthur?

Her expression was a little angry. She stood before Arthur and said, "Arthur is my friend. I personally invited him to the party."

"He helped me catch a thief and retrieved my stolen items. He's my benefactor, so no one has the right to kick him out!"

When Grott heard that Arthur had helped Jynx catch a thief, his expression darkened, but he quickly returned to normal.

He looked at Jynx with a smile and said, "Miss Jynx, even if this country bumpkin helped you, you could've just given him some gold coins. Why did you bring him to the banquet?"

"Bringing a commoner to this banquet is embarrassing for us nobles."

"Moreover, this country bumpkin might've been in cahoots with the thief," Ferguson added. "He must've had an ulterior motive for doing all this."

As Grott and Ferguson finished their words, the nobles around them responded, "This boy is not fit to enter this place where we nobles are. It's better to get him out."

Jynx's expression darkened when she heard how disrespectful these two were to Arthur, trying to incite the other nobles to become enemies with him.

She stood in front of Arthur, her eyes filled with anger. She wanted to scold the two and chase them away. Before she could speak, Arthur patted her shoulder and shook his head. He casually said, "No matter how elegant the occasion is, you can't avoid hearing a few dog barks."

"If you only listen to barking dogs, it'll only affect your mood. If you retaliate against their barking, you'll seem like a joke instead."

"Pfft!" Jynx covered her mouth and laughed. Both Grott's and Ferguson's faces were frighteningly gloomy hearing Arthur's words. The group of nobles around them also had ugly expressions.

At that moment, a woman squeezed through the crowd and came over. She had a head full of shiny golden hair that flowed like a waterfall. She wore an off-shoulder high-slit black dress. Her skin was fair, and her face was a sharp oval. She was about the same age as Jynx, but she looked more condescending compared to Jynx's intelligent demeanor.

She was the daughter of Cantero City's mayor, Catherine. Although she was young, she was already the leader of this circle of nobles.

All the noble heirs shut their mouths the moment they saw her. It was evident that her status was the highest among this group of people.

Catherine's gaze was a little cold. Today was the same as usual; she had always been the center of attention at the party, and everyone gathered around her.

However, all the attention on her was snatched away when this boy entered the ball with Jynx. Furthermore, she had always liked Grott, but he was always trying to approach Jynx. Although Jynx wasn't at fault, Catherine still hated the girl over that.

Now, she was even more furious when this commoner, who was close to Jynx, called Grott a dog. She rushed in arrogantly and glanced at Arthur coldly. Then, she raised her hand and gestured, "This is a ball for nobles; not some animal barn for commoners."

"Men, chase this country bumpkin out!"
