Chapter 17 - Friend or Foe

She woke up, her back was in pain and her shoulder was burning in pain from the bite.

She thought. That's what I get for sleeping inside a box and especially one this small.

She slowly moved her hand to cover her shoulder. She hissed as she touched her shoulder.

She thought. I need to find a first aid kit. Ugh! It hurts!

She put her hands on the box cover and gave it a push. She sprang open from the box. It was so bright, that she had to blink a few times. When her vision got clearer, she met eyes with a man.

He has long silky white hair, two brown dog-like ears and slit pupils like a cat's eyes. His eyes have different colours-his left eye is emerald green and his right eye is shining gold. He looked like a teenager.

He stared at Mary with a shocked expression like he wasn't expecting someone to be inside the box.

Mary snapped out and stopped observing him. She let out a scream and tried to move backward. She had forgotten, she was in a box.

The box couldn't hold onto her weight anymore and fell over, dragging Mary with it.

She hit her back on the floor and yelled "Ouch!" Then, she saw something that immediately made her put her hands on her mouth.

She saw a long snake tail. It was shining white like the moon. Something was shining next to the tail too. She crawled to it and saw a scalpel.

She took the scalpel and stood up, holding it to her chest, facing the man. He looked at her but this time his pupil was round.

She tried to observe him better now. She looked at him from his head, slowly to his body and then his.

Mary panicked, her eyes widened in shock as she took a step back. She looked at the man again. His lower half was a white snake tail that she saw earlier.

She indicated her scalpel at the man. Her hands trembled madly. The man still looking at her with round eyes and dashed at her.

He was so fast, she couldn't dodge him. He held both her hands, avoiding the scalpel. The grip wasn't painful instead it felt warm and gentle.

Mary stood there stunned for a few seconds and swung her hands away from his.

She shouted "What do you want!?" with a terrified expression.

He looked at her, frowning. He put one of his hands on his chin and his eyes were closed like he was thinking hard about something.

She thought. Now it's my time to escape!

She looked at the door and looked to the floor. Suddenly, she felt a little lost in hope. His tail was surrounding her, she has nowhere to run.

Then, he turned back to Mary with a smile and pointed at her. Mary flinched but he continued. He pointed himself next and used both his hands to grab each other and shake.

Mary looked at him, confused. His smile faded and turned into a frown.

Mary thought. Is he trying to be my friend? No, that can't be. He must have a plan in mind. But if I refuse him, will I die?

She peeked at him and continued thinking. I guess I don't have much of a choice....and it would be nice to have someone to protect me for now.

She stared at him and rubbed her neck.

"Um...do you mean you want to be friends with me?"Mary said with a worried tone.

He looked at Mary, shocked. His eyes were sharp for a second and then turned round. He beamed at her and nodded. The tip of his tail was shaking madly like a dog wagging his tail.

Then, he suddenly dashed towards Mary and hugged her. Mary pushed him back and said "Even if we're friends doesn't mean, you can do anything you like to me. We need rules!"

He looked at Mary his tail stooped wagging and his dog-like ears were down. He was upset but he forced a smile and nodded sadly.

Mary said in a powerful voice "First, no psychical contact. Second, leave a distance between the two of us. That's all for now, I guess. Do you understand?"

He nodded still with a sad expression like an upset puppy.

"Good" Mary mumbled."That should keep me safe for now."
