Just as Gaia was about to say something, a transport shuttle flies right overhead, lowering to the ground nearby, and making us turn to look at it in alarm. "We're out of time."
The five of us stood there, looking at each other, trying to think of what to do when a gunshot broke the silence. The girls looked confused for a moment, but I knew what this was. Octavia was punishing the ones wanting a better life not under the reign. Before anyone could say anything, another gunshot was heard followed by a distant cry of pain, that broke their shock making Clarke whispers in horror, "They're shooting at the defectors."
I was the first one to sprint and a few seconds later the girl came after me, leaving Niylah to sleep peacefully in the ruins. It didn't take us long to stumble across Bellamy and Echo who were looking for the same target as us.
As we all searched for the source of the gunfire, Clarke grew more and more worried and I would lie if I say I didn't know why. She was worried that if Octavia's men destroy the shuttle, Dyoza will hurt Abby or worse, Madi. Every rustle of leaves, every creak of crumbling stone, seemed to echo in the silence... We were all experienced fighters, no strangers to danger, but this situation felt different. The shooter was someone way too skilled for a mere grounder and yet at the same time it felt like we were up against some clan leader.
After the fifth shot was fired, everyone started to get jumpy, especially when three defectors had already been killed by the shooter. My heart pounded in my chest, and I felt a sense of urgency to locate the shooter before they had another chance to strike. As we cautiously moved between the ruins, I caught a glimpse of a flash in the distance.
"Over there!" I whispered, signaling the others to follow me. We moved as silently as possible, keeping ourselves low to the ground, and taking cover behind any debris we could find. The ruins provided ample hiding spots for the shooter, and we had to be careful not to expose ourselves so that we could ambush him or her.
Bellamy gestured for Echo, Gaia, and me to circle around from opposite sides while he, Clarke, and Zoe took a more direct route, trying to flush out the shooter. I knew that if we could catch them off guard, we might have a chance to end this quickly and without further pointless deaths that serve no benefit to anyone.
However, before we could even make it past the ten-meter mark, a shot rang out, missing Bellamy by a mere centimeter. The bullet embedded itself in the stonewall, sending shards flying.
We all immediately took cover, our eyes scanning the area for any sign of the shooter. It didn't take long to spot them – a figure cloaked in dark clothing, hiding among the debris. But what shocked us even more was the identity of the shooter. It was Cooper.
Clarke's eyes widened in disbelief and anger. She couldn't comprehend why Cooper would be killing the defectors when Octavia had ordered them to be released. "Cooper!" she shouted in fury, her voice laced with frustration and betrayal. "What in God's name are you doing? Octavia said to let them go!"
Her head cocks to the side as if she doesn't understand his question. Making me believe that Cooper found this normal, almost as if what she was doing was akin to wiping the floor. "Who do you think gave me the order?"
"Where is she?"
"In her office, waiting to hear that it's done."
As Cooper's chilling response sank in, Clarke's eyes widened in horror.
"No," Clarke whispered, her voice trembling in disbelief. "Octavia wouldn't do that. She wouldn't kill innocent people who are just trying to find a safe place to live."
But Cooper's cold expression and lack of remorse told a different story. Without hesitation, she turned back toward the fleeing grounders, and with a sinister grin, she fired her weapon once more. The shots echoed through the ruins as she targeted the defenseless defectors, intent on fulfilling Octavia's ruthless command.
As the sixth bullet was fired, I knew that we had to stop the madwoman before she misses and hits the shuttle. So before she could fire her seventh shot, I charged toward the building where Cooper stood.
When I reached the entrance of the building, I saw Cooper turning to face me, her gun still in hand. Without a second thought, I swung my fist at her with all the force I could muster. The impact was fierce, and I felt a sickening crunch as my fist connected with her face. Cooper stumbled back, and for a moment, she didn't move. I feared that I had gone too far, that I had accidentally killed her in the heat of the moment. But there was no time to dwell on it. I turned back to the chaos outside, where the others run to save the defectors, but only two survived and even then, both were injured quite badly.
To my relief, I saw Cooper slowly beginning to stir. She groaned, and I knew that I hadn't taken her life, but I had certainly made my point, one that hopefully will scare the living hell out of her from now onwards.
At the same time, Clarke and the others rushed to the wounded grounders, but what they found was not pretty at all. The woman had already succumbed to her injuries, her lifeless body lying still on the ground. The man, on the other hand, was barely holding on, gasping for breath as he struggled to stay alive.
Clarke knelt beside the man. "Hang on," she pleaded, trying to provide comfort even in the midst of the tragedy. "We're going to get you to help."
But it was clear that the man's injuries were severe, and there was little anyone could do to save him. He reached out weakly, his hand trembling as he tried to touch Clarke's face. "Thank you," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Thank you for trying..."
Tears welled up in Clarke's eyes as she held the man's hand gently. "I'm so sorry. We'll make sure your sacrifice was not in vain. We'll find a way to end this senseless violence."
The man managed a faint smile, his breathing growing shallower. "Please... make Blodreina see reason," he gasped. "She was once a leader of hope. Now... she's lost her way."
"We will," Clarke promised, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let this madness continue. I promise you."
With those final words, the man took one last breath and his hand fell limply to the ground. He was gone.
