Chapter 114 - Chapter 113 - The chips

"How's that working, Abby? It's a simple chip after all?"

"It's more than a simple chip, Leon. It's something that Becca Franko had made before the bombs destroyed earth. Even though it does look like a simple chip, its functions are more useful than we can even imagine. Think about it, what if, let's say you were paralyzed, using this chip would solve that disability for you. The same thing would happen to Finn once he gets his chip."

The more I listen to Abby's explanation, the more it starts making less sense. Firstly, where did those chips come from and how is Jaha connected to all of them? Then there's the obvious problem, everyone that has this chip seemed less…how should I say it, not themselves, and while I barely spent any time with most of these people, even I could see that they act as if they weren't afraid of anything.

If that wasn't strange already, the fact that even Byrne and Abby tried to make change my mind about this chip, along the way toward the infirmary bay. However, unlike his two companions, Jaha stood silent the whole way, not speaking even a word to me.

As soon as we reached the infirmary, Abby and Jaha walked towards the bed, while Byrne and I stood behind. Seeing that this might be my only chance to learn something about these chips and what they are doing before Jaha takes over the whole bunker.

"Say, mam, what's up with Jaha and Abby and their obsessions with those chips?"

"You shouldn't talk like that Leon. It's rude to say that both Abby and Thelonious are obsessed with the chips. After all, they are the ones who saved everyone from possible annihilation when Clarke blows the gate. She even took away the first prototype that we used to study and see if we could upgrade the chips to integrate more abilities into them, thus giving us a better chance to actually achieve peace."

It was sad to hear that even Byrne was fooled by Jaha and become whatever the rest of them are. If that wasn't bad already, the fact that I'm more than sure that most of the survivors would accept the chip once they got the chance…makes me reconsider my choices. Wells, Monroe, and I could always leave through the tunnels and make it outside before Jaha and his brainwashed people could catch us, then again, who knows how many people he had hidden in the woods just in case whatever plan he has, fails because of me. Narcissistic as I might be, it was the truth nevertheless. Other than me and maybe Wells no one from this bunker, not even Zoe either could disturb Jaha in such a way that whatever plan he had would be put to stop or forced to make a new one.

"Is that so? I'm sorry if I sounded way too rude, but I was just curious. I mean, put yourself in my position. I had to live day by day under constant assaults by the grounders from underground. I saw my people dying just to block the grounders. I saw grounders dying just to move a meter forwards, so please don't take to heart if your sudden appearance made me doubt your motives."

"There's no need for that Leon. The truth is that even if Thelonious and Abby didn't come, Pike did send us a message requesting a few groups to come here and help defend the place just in case, right before he disappeared."

Unknowingly to me Jaha and Abby gave Finn the chip while Byrne and I were talking. Out of nowhere, Finn opened his eyes before breathing heavily as if he just got out of the ocean and was trying to catch his breath. By the time he recovered, all of us gathered around his bed, and while I was the only one shocked to see him all fine and awake, Jaha, Byrne, and Abby simply glanced at the boy before Thelonious decided to speak.

"How are you feeling Collins? Are you feeling uncomfortable or is anything hurting you?"

"Ah, no sir. Everything is fine and dandy. Thank you for waking me up?"

"Thank you, Jaha for what you had done to wake Finn."

'No problem Leon. It's my duty as the new chancellor to take care of my people. Is there anything you need from me?"

"Can I ask you three to leave Finn and me alone for a few minutes? "

"Why's that Leon? We just woke Finn, would it be normal for me, the only doctor in the whole bunker to stay and check on him?"

"No offense Dr. Griffin, but I just want to tell Finn what happened since he fell into that coma."

Before Abby could say anything, Jaha nodded as he dragged the doctor out of the room. Byrne did take a last glance at me before she too followed the new chancellor out of the room leaving me with Finn. When I was sure that neither one of them was at the door, thanks to Wells, I turned to face Finn only to see him smiling at me.

Just as I was about to ask him if he was all right, all of my instincts screamed at me to run away and before I could react a pair of slender arms caught me from behind. Turning my head towards the side, I was shocked when I saw Zoe tightly holding onto me as Finn slowly dragged his tired body towards me with a small blue object in his hand. That's when it hit me, the chips were nothing more than control devices for Jaha to take over everyone in the most peaceful way that would ensure him more manpower than he could ever need. A smart move from him, but unlike what my friends could do, the many times I failed to react and found myself at death's doorstep, I wasn't the same boy that once wouldn't have risked everything just to find a way out.

Unfortunately for Zoe, I grabbed her waist before we launched toward the wall knocking the air out of her and freeing myself from her grasp. Neither she nor Finn expected that kind of outburst from me and before he could react, I punched him back to oblivion, hopefully not into another coma. With the two of them down, I had to leave the room, or else I would have to knock everyone that came with Jaha out to even dream of getting out from this place unchanged by whatever the chip was doing to them.
