Chapter 87 - Chapter 86 - The Mad Queen (2)

Nothing happening for three hours in a row made most of the grounders relax, but not everyone was like them. Pike's men alongside Anya, Finn, Wells, Byrne, and I were the only ones still expecting an attack from Azgeda or at least one last assassination attempt before they deem the kid a lost cause.

For some reason, Raven hasn't come to talk with me even after we greet each other when I ate inside the bunker, but rather than going after her and seeing what happens, I simply choose to ignore the rather clear signs. I know that I should go and talk with her, but deep inside my heart, I somehow felt that it wasn't the right moment.

At the same time, the girl in question was having similar thoughts. Raven had no idea when she had talked the last time with Leon or about what, but she remembers clearly the look on his face when she bluntly rejected him. She still hoped that he would try again, that she would accept him this time, but that didn't come. He left not long after the Mountain was conquered, and even after three months, Leon hadn't said anything to her, even today he barely greeted her before eating alone.

Her body and mind felt tired and numb but she was unwilling to get over him. Something about him made her unable of forgetting that smile of his and truthfully him.

Suddenly the alarm started making everyone in the bunker alert. While Raven wasn't exactly a soldier, she had her fair share of combat since she arrived, even a child would realize that something or someone attacked them.

Just as she was about to enter the command center, a man half naked and covered in tribal tattoos charged at her, sending the girl onto the floor. The grounder stood tall over her and just as Raven thought that this would be her last memory, a loud gunshot resonate in the hallway before the grounder collapsed to the grounder with blood gushing out of his chest.

I quickly rushed towards Raven, helping her get on her feet before she glanced at me hatefully.

"I could have managed it myself, but thanks."

"Sure thing, Tinky. I don't doubt your prowess Raven, but the assassin had more experience than we have years, so please don't act so thought in front of me. Aren't we friends?"

Maybe my words hurt her or maybe it was the shock that she suffered, but Raven hugged me tightly for a few moments before she broke it. She took one last look at the Azgeda assassin before we both made our way toward the command center where Byrne, Finn, Anya, Sinclair, and Wells have already fortified the place. Prior to the alarm, Jackson brought the boy there before he had to help the guards at the entrance. All of us knew that Azgeda would attack us, but never in our wildest dreams would have imagined that they would bring more than a hundred warriors to slaughter their way inside and kill the boy.

My guts are telling me that even if we prevail and kill all of them the Ice Queen would simply tell Lexa that those are marauders and that her peace-loving people wouldn't have attacked their allies in such a brutal way.

As soon as we made it inside the command center, I saw Finn talking with Anya, Byrne, and Gustus about a possible counter-attack while Wells and Sinclair were trying their hardest to keep an eye on anything and everything that was happing inside and outside of the bunker. After she gave me the don't you dare die on my look, Raven went to help Sinclair and Wells while I approached Byrne.

"Major Byrne, the honor guards are willing to charge the Azgeda, even if that would mean they would die."

"We can't just charge them. They are outnumbering us at least two to one, not to mention how many assassins may have made it inside this place. Thank god Anya was close to the boy or else he would have been killed."

Just as Anya was about to say something, I interfered in their conversation earning me a glare from the grounder general as well as Byrne.

"They are already inside. I just took care of one of them on my way here. Gustus' plan may work if we do it at the right moment."

My words made both Finn and Byrne raise their eyes brows while Anya and Gustus were simply waiting for me to elaborate further about my seemly crazy plan.

"Unless we lost all of the people from the farm station, we have at least 40 people that can use a gun just from our side, while Lexa's guards are still battling with the Azgeda in front of the main entrance. Besides those guards, Anya and Gustus have ten more guards guarding this room. If we can use the tunnels, we could sneak behind the Azgeda and unleash hell on them with our guns, giving Lexa's guards more than enough breathing room to finish whoever survived the bullets."

My plan wasn't exactly groundbreaking, but I sincerely believe that this is our only chance of keeping the boy alive as well as getting rid of the grounders that had attacked us.

No one said anything for a few seconds, most likely weighing the chances of us actually pulling this mad plan of mine to success. Thankfully, after no more than a minute, Byrne let out a sigh, before she turned to look at me once again.

"You know, Leon, one day you and your crazy plans and ideas would be the death of me. However, seeing how we don't have that much leverage to use against them, I'm willing to go with your idea. We would use the tunnels to get a better firing arch, and then let the commander guards take care of what's left of the enemy." When she the end of her sentence, Byrne turned towards Anya and Gustus, making both grounders confused before they heard the woman elaborate further. "And with the help of our allies, we would wipe out the Ice Nation warriors before we send someone to Polis to inform the commander about this misfortunate incident. Of course only if our allies are willing to help us."

Say whatever you want about her, but despite our few conflicts, Byrne is one of the few people I respect. To be fair, she is probably one of the few reasons most people aren't dead. I have seen how classless and how juicy we were for the grounders when we first landed and don't tell me that most people that had lived on the Ark were prepared for what waited for them down here. Above all, she had her way of making people do her bidding without actually forcing things upon them.

Hearing Byrne's words, both Anya and Gustus were taken aback as if the woman has just insinuated that the grounders were going to betray them again, just like they were in the very same place almost four months ago.
