…
The next morning, Hannah dragged her heavy body to the company. She felt like she was hit several times in the head by a hammer.
If not for the fear that she would be punished by Axel, she would not have stepped out of her house today.
Slowly, she dragged her feet to Axel's office, her eyes half closed. She knocked twice and when she heard his answer, she turned the handle and entered the office.
"Good morning". Axel raised his head from the papers when he heard Hannah's voice. He thought she was going to stay home today given the amount of alcohol she drank the night before. It was clear that she didn't get enough rest as she was trying hard to shuffle a yawn.
But since she was already here then…
"Well aren't you early miss Hannah?" Axel asked and he saw Hannah's half-closed eyes widen before closing and opening a few times. He bit his lower lip hard to stop himself from smiling at the mixed expressions that appeared on her face.
"I… the…thing is". Hannah stuttered, unable to form a reasonable explanation.
"How is your foot?" Axel asked all of a sudden and his eyes moved to her injured foot that was hidden inside her shoe.
Heading the question, Hannah suddenly felt a sharp pain in her leg and she struggled to stand still.
Wait. How did he know? Hannah wondered. He must have noticed her awkward movements. That must be it.
Axel saw her wobble and he frowned, unsure if it was a result of the hangover or the injury in her foot. "Are you alright?"
"Yes…yes, I'm fine". Hannah yawned again and Axel pressed his lips together to stop himself from laughing at the yawning kitten. Standing in front of him with her head swaying from side to side, she looked like she was going to fall to the ground anytime soon.
"You can leave". He waved his hand and Hannah nodded. He saw the relieved expression on her face as she turned around and walked out of the office.
Hannah dragged her legs back to her desk and she sat down with her head falling on the desk. She planned to sleep for a while. Just for ten minutes before she starts working. 'Yes, ten minutes would be enough'.
Unknown to her, Axel was watching her through the glass wall. He had raised the blinds and was watching Hannah as she slept peacefully. He thought of sending her home to rest but since Hannah already found a resting place on her hard wooden desk, he let her be.
Axel went back to work, with the blinds still raised. He would check on Hannah from time to time to see if she had woken up or if she was feeling uncomfortable. But it seems she was very comfortable as she had not moved from her position for a long time.
After barely twenty minutes, the telephone on Hannah's desk rang and she jerked up in surprise. She instantly regretted her action as she felt a sharp pain in her neck when she raised her head.
Hannah took the telephone and raised it to her ear. With a groggy and irritable voice, she spoke, "Hello". After listening to the person on the other end, Hannah hung up and slumped back in her seat. It was time to work.
Axel watched as Hannah sluggishly stood up from her seat with papers in her hand and started walking down the corridor. He furrowed his brows, wondering where she was going. Hannah was his personal secretary and she answered only to him. She was not supposed to go anywhere except if he asked her to. Camden would not have called her and even if he did, he would have asked Axel first. So where was Hannah going to?
Hannah dragged her feet to the elevator as she was heading to the floor below them. She got a call from the secretary of the general manager and without thinking or asking questions, she was heading there.
When Hannah got to the tenth floor, she looked around, confused about the direction to take. Now that she thought about it, she had never really walked around the company except the first day she came here and Camden showed her around. And now, she was standing in front of the elevator, looking like a lost sheep.
Sighting another person nearby, Hannah walked up to the man and asked, "where is the general manager's office?" The man looked at her weirdly as if asking what was wrong with her head. "I am new here," said Hannah, even though she has been working here for months. The man nodded in understanding and directed Hannah to the office.
Hannah took the direction the man gave her and she finally arrived at the general manager's office. She stood there taking in the sight in front of her.
The general manager's office was not just an office, it looked like a whole department on its own. There was a sliding glass door at the entrance and on top of it was a sign which read; General Manager. Walking in, Hannah noticed three female employees sitting at their desks while minding their work. Hannah walked to one of them and tried to get her attention by waving her hand in from of her face.
The girl raised her head abruptly with evident displeasure on her face. "What are you doing here?" She questioned as she took in Hannah's appearance with her owl-like eyes.
Hannah ignored her unnecessarily loud voice and said calmly, "I was told to come here. "
One of the other two women stood up and walked to Hannah. "Oh, so it's you?" Hannah looked at the girl who appeared to be the youngest of the three. She was dressed in a light blue shirt and a short black skirt that stopped at her mid-thighs. On her feet were black heels that clicked on the marble tiles as she walked. Her perfume was so strong that Hannah had to force herself to stand still and not take a step back as it was making her dizzy, not that she wasn't already. "Come on, the general manager awaits you".
The girl turned around and walked away, swaying her hips seductively. Hannah walked behind her, stifling another yawn and trying her best to keep up with the other girl's pace but it proved to be difficult with her injured foot.
After walking for a while, the girl stopped and gestured to Hannah to go in before walking away. Hannah watched the retreating figure of the woman for a while before raising her hand to knock. When she heard the voice from inside telling her to come in, Hannah bent the handle and walked in.
The office was brightly lit with the light that came from the floor-to-ceiling window on the side. Compared to Axel's office, the office of the general manager was unnecessarily vast which Hannah saw as a waste of space, money, and time of the builders. Behind the desk was a man, who sat on a swivel chair with his back facing her.
Immediately, Hannah felt the intimidating aura around him. It was not like Axel's which makes people want to hide, hold their breath and bow their heads whenever he is around, it was different. It makes one scared as if trying to compel submission.
Hannah frowned as the man kept still without moving. Were they going to just stay still and listen to each other breathing?
Hannah could not take it anymore and cleared her throat loud enough to gather the man's attention. "Ahem… You sent for me?"
At the sound of her voice, the man turned around in the swivel chair and faced Hannah, his eyes boring into her like daggers.
When Hannah saw his face, she was overwhelmed by so much anger and irritation. If she had known that he was the one who sent for her, she would have ignored him and continued taking her much-needed rest.
It was the same man. The same idiot who had caused her bottle to break at the cafeteria yesterday and forced her to apologize.
