Chapter 4 - First Contact

The hospital's automatic doors slid open as Robert and Laura rushed in, carrying the battered boy. His pale face was streaked with dirt and sweat, his breathing shallow but rhythmic. A few nurses at the reception desk looked up in surprise, but their professional instincts kicked in immediately.

"Quick, over here!" one of the nurses called, motioning to a gurney being wheeled over.

Robert gently laid the boy down, his hands trembling slightly as he released his grip. The boy groaned softly, his head lolling to the side as Laura brushed his hair away from his face. She couldn't help but notice how delicate his features were despite the bruises and grime.

"What happened?" the nurse asked, her tone urgent but calm.

"We found him lying in the middle of the road," Robert explained, his voice steady but edged with tension. "He's injured and possibly dehydrated. Please, just do whatever you can to help him."

The nurse nodded, signaling to the medical team. "We'll take care of him. Please wait in the lobby—we'll update you as soon as we can."

Laura hesitated, her hands lingering on the boy's shoulder. "Please," she whispered to the nurse. "Do everything you can."

The nurse gave her a reassuring nod before the gurney was wheeled through a set of double doors, disappearing into the emergency ward.

The couple sat in the waiting area, the sterile white walls and the faint smell of antiseptic amplifying the tension in the air. Laura sat with her hands clasped tightly together, her knuckles white. Robert leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, staring at the floor.

"What do you think happened to him?" Laura asked softly, breaking the silence.

Robert shook his head. "I don't know. But those injuries… it looked like he's been through hell."

"Who could leave a child like that? In the middle of the road, no less," she said, her voice breaking.

Robert reached out, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We'll find out, Laura. But right now, the most important thing is that he gets the care he needs."

They fell silent again, the weight of the situation pressing down on them.

---

About half an hour later, a doctor emerged from the emergency ward, his face calm but serious. The couple stood up immediately, their eyes filled with concern.

"How is he?" Laura asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"He's stable," the doctor replied. "Most of the injuries are superficial—bruises, scrapes, and signs of malnourishment. There's no indication of internal damage, which is a relief. However…" He paused, his brow furrowing.

"However?" Robert prompted, his tone sharp with concern.

The doctor sighed. "He's severely dehydrated and underweight, signs that he's been neglected for some time. He'll need proper nutrition and care to recover fully. For now, he's asleep. You can see him if you'd like, but he'll need rest."

Laura placed a hand over her chest, relief washing over her. "Thank you, doctor. Truly."

The doctor nodded. "He's lucky you found him when you did. If he'd been out there much longer, it could have been much worse."

---

The couple entered the small hospital room where the boy lay. The harsh fluorescent lighting softened his features, making him look almost peaceful despite the bandages covering his arms and head. Laura walked over to the bedside, pulling up a chair as Robert stood by the foot of the bed, arms crossed.

"He looks so fragile," Laura murmured, her eyes welling up with tears. "What kind of life must he have had to end up like this?"

Robert didn't respond immediately. He stared at the boy, his mind racing with questions. Who was he? Where had he come from? Why was he abandoned?

"We'll figure it out," Robert said finally, his voice firm. "Until then, we'll make sure he's safe. He's in our care now."

Laura turned to look at him, her expression softening. "Robert… do you think this is a sign?"

"A sign?"

Her voice wavered as she spoke. "We've been praying for a child, for a family. And now, here he is—this boy who needs us just as much as we need him."

Robert met her gaze, his expression unreadable for a moment before it softened. He stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Maybe it is," he said quietly. "Maybe this is our chance."

The boy stirred slightly in his sleep, a soft groan escaping his lips. Laura reached out, gently brushing his hair away from his face.

"Rest now," she whispered. "You're safe with us."

---

The atmosphere in the room grew calm, almost serene, as the couple stood by the boy's side. For the first time in months, Laura felt a glimmer of hope. Whatever the future held, she knew one thing for certain: this boy had changed their lives forever.
