Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 14

-Evelyn's P.O.V-

The next weeks went by in a flash. Alexander and Matthew had been extremely busy during and after school with both Prom and getting ready for Graduation. I was hanging out more and more with the twins, Caleb, Jonathan and Dawson. Even after school Dawson would come over the house and hung out. I did make it very clear to him the first couple of days that I couldn't reciprocate his feelings for me. I wanted us to be best friends like we were back in Middle School but I couldn't love him the way he loved me. He was very mature about it and said he understood completely. That lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. The twins and I had finally chosen and ordered our dresses. I kept my choice of wearing the light crimson dress while the twins got a lilac and a pink dress for themselves. Natasha's was knee length and strapless while Kristine's was ankle length with one strapless shoulder while the other was a ¾ length sleeve. We agreed to get our hair and makeup professionally done so we booked our appointments a week in advanced. From what I heard from Dawson, Alexander had also already gotten his tux and the matching color shirt to my dress. My brother had managed to get one of the Senior girls to make Dawson her date so he could get into the dance. It was all coming along great. Mom came back last week and dad had been staying in Alexander's room. We've all been getting along quite well and it feels like we're a family again. Dad has still been looking for a place close by but I have a feeling that he and mom want to get back together but are afraid to tell us in case we don't agree. I wouldn't mind, dad has shown that he is here to stay this time. I did over hear them talking about work so I thought dad would leave us again but he said he would find something near by that didn't require him to be moving around. It made me happy to hear that he's really trying to stay here. I know he loved being sent in battle but he is finally thinking about Matthew and me and how he doesn't want to miss out on us anymore. Matthew and Alexander got their acceptance letters they'll be about 6 hours away from home. They already applied to share a dorm so they're waiting on that approval. Things were really falling into place for everyone.

"I can't believe Prom is tomorrow!" Natasha squealed as we all ate lunch. Mathew and Alexander had finally been freed from helping out the prom committee last week and I was just happy to have him next to me.

"Remember we have the beauty salon appointment at 3 o'clock." Kristine added. Jonathan had her in his arms. We had all finished eating and were just chatting away.

"We already rented out the limo." Matthew said. It sounded like we were just checking off our to do lists. I couldn't help but smile. "We're all gonna get picked up at Alexander's, right?" He asked the guys around the table. Jonathan, Caleb, Dawson and Alexander nodded in agreement.

"Are you picking us up at our house?" I asked as I looked at my brother. He nodded. "What about Julia and Cassandra are they joining us at the house?" Cassandra was the girl that had agreed to take Dawson as her date until we all got into the salon. She already had a boyfriend and he seemed to be OK with it.

"Cassandra will meet us up at the salon, she'll be riding there with her boyfriend. Julia's parents are a bit strict so they'll be dropping her off and picking her up afterwards." Matthew replied.

"So, what's the deal with you and Julia? Are you two going out or…?" Alexander questioned what we all were wondering.

"No. We're just friends. She's my biology partner." He scoots over getting closer to the group. "She's into girls." We all looked at him surprised as he scoots back on his chair. "Her parents are extremely strict with her as I mentioned and she asked me to go with her as a disguise. Her real date will be waiting for her inside."

"Good for her." Natasha commented. We all agreed. She still couldn't come out to her parents but that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy her dance with the person she really wanted to. I was proud of my brother for helping her out without judgment. The bell rang for us to go to our next class. We all walked together and split after getting our things from the lockers.

"I need to take Dawson to pick up his tux today. I won't be able to drive you home." Alexander told me as he walked me to my next class, the twins walking in front of us.

"Matthew is running some errands for mom. I'll ask the twins for a ride." I said with a smile. He only nodded. As we reached my class, he gave me a kiss and said his goodbye. The twins were already seated at our usual spot, I sat behind Kristine and took out my books.

"You, ok?" She asked as she saw how slumped I looked and felt.

"I don't know. I just feel I haven't really been hanging out with Alexander this past month. We're finally able to show our affection to everyone yet I have felt him so distant."

"You have to understand, he's been busy with Prom and Graduation. Its not his fault." Kristine said in his defense and I knew she was right.

"I know. I just feel a little lonely." Kristine patted my back as I rested my head on the desk.

"I wish I could tell you things will go back to normal after prom but I'd be lying."

"I know. He'll be even more busy with Graduation." I sighed.

"If it helps in any way, I know how you feel. Jonathan has been extremely busy too with Student Council and Graduation. I barely get to see him during and after school too." I looked up at Kristine and held her hand.

"Why did we have to be born a year after them." I whined. She smiled and gave my hand one last squeeze before turning around as the teacher walked in and started class.

-Matthew and Alexander-

"How are you feeling about tomorrow?" Matthew asked his friend as they waited for the teacher.

"Nervous. I really hope she likes the surprise." Alexander took out his books and placed them on his desk, Matthew doing the same.

"Don't worry it took us almost 2 weeks but everything came out perfect. I'm just glad that we could use the prom committee as an excuse."

"We only helped them out for 2 days but Evelyn bought that we had to do it for that long." Alexander opened his notebook and flipped through the pages until he landed on one with lots of notes on it. "Prom is finally tomorrow and I already have everything checked out. I was afraid your mom and dad wouldn't agree to let her spend the night with me."

"They know you and they know my sister. Yeah, my dad was a little skeptical because she's his little girl but my mom isn't old school." Matthew looked over Alexander's notes and smiled. He had literally written down everything he needed and wanted to do to make tomorrow night special for Evelyn. "Neat freak." He said playfully.

"It needs to be perfect. Our first time needs to be perfect."

"I understand I helped you planned it out but please, I don't need to know the details." Matthew said. The teacher walked in and ordered everyone to sit down and silent down.

'Tomorrow needs to be perfect.' Alexander thought, not even paying attention to class and just looking over his notes, smiling at everything he had prepared for Evelyn.

School finally came to an end. Everyone in the hallways was talking about Prom tomorrow, both Seniors and Underclassmen were excited about it. "Its great that Prom is on a Saturday and not like last year that they made it on a Wednesday, all the Seniors last year were upset about having to come to school the next day and not being able to fully enjoy themselves." Natasha said feeling bad for last year's graduates.

"I'm just happy I get to tag along." Dawson said walking next to Evelyn towards the parking lot. "Alexander is taking me to get my tux today. I wasn't sure I was even going to get to go so I left it for last minute."

"It's a good thing that Matthew asked Cassandra for the favor." Evelyn commented. She looked over at Alexander's car. He was already waiting for Dawson by the driver's side. "I'm going to go say bye to Alexander, wait for me?" She asked the twins who only nodded in response. Both Evelyn and Dawson walked over. Dawson getting inside the car to give his brother and Evelyn some privacy. He had come to peace with his feelings for her knowing that it would never happen. "I just wanted to give you a kiss goodbye." She said as she reached her boyfriend. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in, pressing his lips firmly on hers.

"I love you." He whispered against her lips.

"I love you too." He released his hold on her.

"I'll call you when I get home." He said as he got into his car. Evelyn walking back towards the twins. Kristine placed her arm over Evelyn's shoulder and pulled her towards her car. Even with Alexander telling her he loved her, Evelyn still looked down.

"We'll all have a great day tomorrow. Hang in there." Kristine said as she drove out of the parking lot.

"I'm sorry you girls have to go through this with your boyfriends." Natasha genuinely felt bad for her sister and best friend. She and Caleb were always together and even shared a few classes.

"You're fine Nat, don't feel bad for our choice in men." Evelyn said with a light giggle. Kristine nodded in agreement. Kristine drove into the McNealy's driveway. "I'll see you girls tomorrow." Evelyn waved the twins goodbye and made her way into her house. "Mom, dad, I'm home." She called out as she closed the door behind her.

"Welcome home sweetie." Sophia called out from the kitchen. Evelyn left her backpack by the door and walked to the kitchen.

"Where's dad?" Evelyn questioned as she sat by the counter.

"He got called to attend a job interview." Sophia handed Evelyn a plate of ground beef empanadas with a side of salsa and Mexican coleslaw. "I saw this recipe online and wanted to try it out." She said as she handed her daughter a soda from the fridge.

"Wow they look super good." Evelyn took a bite and couldn't help but smile. "This are amazing!" She took another bite this time added a bit of salsa and Mexican coleslaw on it. "The salsa and coleslaw makes it even better."

"I'm glad they came out good. I hope Matthew and Maverick like them too." Sophia squealed with excitement. She looked so happy that her recipe was a success.

"They will. Trust me." Evelyn continued eating and chatting with her mother about school and about tomorrow's prom. An hour or so later both Matthew and Maverick got home. Sophia served them all as they sat at the table as a family. Evelyn couldn't help but get seconds of her mom's delicious cooking. They all chatted and laughed. Maverick got the job at a local recruiting office. He would still be working for the government but now he would be behind a desk and not in battle field risking his life every day.

"There's something your father and I have been meaning to talk to you two about." Sophia said as she and Maverick cleared up the table.

"What is it?" Matthew asked as he looked over from his parents to his sister. Maverick grabbed Sophia's hand and gave it a kiss.

"Your mother and I decided to give each other another chance." Evelyn and Matthew looked at each other both with a smile.

"That's amazing." Evelyn said cheerfully and super happy for her parents. Maverick smiled gratefully that his kids were ok with them being together again. He took this as a chance. He looked over at Sophia with a smile and kneeled in front of her, still holding her hand. "Oh my gosh." Evelyn said with wide eyes.

"No way." Matthew too said with wide eyes.

"Sophia Adams, will you do me the honor of once again becoming my wife?" He took a small black velvet box from his pocket and opened it, showing in it a beautiful diamond ring. Sophia covered her mouth. She was full in shock. They had been talking about getting back together, but she never imagined that he would propose to her again.

"Yes, Maverick McNealy, I do want to be your wife again." Maverick slid the ring into her finger. He stood up and held her in his arms, placing his lips onto hers.

"Gross. Go get a room." Matthew said jokingly. His parents parted from the kiss. Evelyn stood from her place and gave them both a hug, Matthew joining in soon after.

"I'm so happy for the both of you." Evelyn said feeling amazingly happy that her parents were getting back together and that they were going to be a family again.
