Chereads / Gorum, The Unstoppable / Chapter 23 - Out Of Place

Chapter 23 - Out Of Place

Gorum walked silently back into town from the inn, his bulky armor clanging softly with each step. Just as the day before, he drew alot of attention from his appearance. However, Gorum was focused on something else...

'I wonder why that memory cropped up in my dream...' he thought as he briskly went towards his destination, accidentally pushing a few people to the side with his stride. Gradually spacing out for the duration of his walk.

After a few minutes of walking, Gorum stood in a crowd of other applicants to the tourney, patiently waiting for the announcement of the tourney's start. Obviously he stuck out like a rock amongst the sand, towering over the competition quite literally. Although it wasn't fair to call it competition in the first place...

'Not alot of demi-humans...' Gorum thought as he scanned the crowd, only seeing the occasional elf or hobbit mixed in with the overwhelming amount of human participants. Perhaps this world had less demi-humans due to the mana levels.

Just as Gorum started to lose himself with pointless contemplation about this world, his thoughts were interrupted by the voice of one of the twins from yesterday.

"Okay everyone~ Now that everyone is gathered, my sister and I will be calling off names and when you hear your name called come stand beside me if you're a warrior and by my sister if you're a mage. If you're a non-combatant you shouldn't have bothered signing up! If your name isn't called it means you weren't accepted into the tourney, no complaining now!" The girl said with a cheerful tone as her and her sister started taking turns calling names off a list for the next 10 minutes or so.

-----------------------------------

"And finally, Gorum. Come step beside me!" Said one of the twins, calling Gorum up to stand in the line beside her.

Gorum strode over to the girl, planting himself at the end of the Mage line, rather than the warrior line. Much to the surprise of the other participants.

"Apologies to everyone who didn't make the cut, you're free stick around and watch the tourney if you wanna!" she said.

"Now then everyone, let's go over the contents of the tourneys! For warriors you'll be participating in a free for all to determine who's strongest. As for mages you'll be doing the same thing but with spells obviously. Any questions?" The girl said as she looked to the participants.

A hand shot up within the mage line.

"Yes. Why is the man, who's clearly a warrior, in the mage line? It's an insult." Said a porcelain skinned, middleaged human woman who wore loose purple robes and a large witches hat that matched her robe.

Gorum figured this would happen, after all the twin he spoke to yesterday had the same reaction when he signed up as a mage the day before. He didn't just do it as a joke though, it was significantly easier to control the output of his mana than his muscles. If he had entered as a warrior he would have ended up killing them all by accident.

"Do not be so close minded, I'm capable with both magic and physical combat. Besides, as a mage it'll be easier to not kill you all by mistake." Gorum said, plainly telling the truth as he always did.

He was quite shit at coming up with lies, the closest he could get to lying was the half truths he told to Omen's Order about why he came to the ballroom. Besides, telling the truth was better in his personal opinion.

However, perhaps he should have lied, because now all of the other participants had their faces scrunched with anger at Gorums statement. To them, it was an insult instead of fact.

"How dare y-"

"Now now! Calm down everyone, Gorum is in the mage line because he signed up as a mage and listed the spell types he's capable of. And Gorum, confidence is nice but perhaps try not to overdo it?" the second twin said, stepping in as she saw her sister might not be able to handle the possible uproar.

"Hrmph." Gorum let out an annoyed grunt. He hadn't said anything wrong, he simply told them why he signed up as a mage.

"Tsk..." The woman in purple robes clicked her tounge and pouted a bit.

"Now that that's done... we'll go ahead and start the warrior tourney. Mages, please go sit to the side where we've provided seating." The first twin said, taking over again and gesturing to some wooden bleachers and logs strewn about.

The disgruntled mages all shuffled to their seats, the warriors getting ready to face one another. Gorum looked around for a spot that would support his weight, spotting a tree stump that had been carved into a seat. He plopped down with a resounding thump, and looked over the warrior group in silence.

'No one particularly impressive...' he thought as he looked at the pretty textbook warriors. It wasn't a surprise though, after all Crimson said that level 100 was considered strong in this world.

"Do you see anyone you favor?..." A small sweet voice piped up from beside Gorum, prompting him to look down and see a small, orange eyed young girl with red skin and a rather plain brown mages robe. She was undoubtedly a red imp, a magic oriented variant of Imp.

"...Just a few, but they're all rather mediocre to me." Gorum said, laying his eyes back on the warriors as they started to brawl, trying to determine who would win.

"It's going to come down to that elf archer, that dwarf with the battle axe, or the hobbit rogue that's skulking around for surprise attacks." he said, answering the Imp.

"Why do you ask?" He quered.

"Well, you were rather confident and just looking at you I assume your a veteran warrior so..." The girl stared up at Gorum, not breaking off eye contact nor blinking.

"I see." he said.

"...Sir, if you don't mind me asking, what sort of spells do specialize in as a magic warrior? I know fire is quite popular for it's mid-battle uses and simple spell compositions..." the Imp asked, having a sort of emotionless aura about her.

"Ah, Force Magic and Pure Mana Magic are what I excel at." Gorum said, not thinking much of it. Even if they knew what magic he used, they wouldn't be able to combat him regardless.

"Pft!-" The Imp and several other mages who were listening in all stifled a laugh as they heard Gorum's answer.

"Hm?" Gorum grunted in confusion, feeling as if he was just left out of a joke.
