I felt weak, and I started shivering. I dropped to my knees and bowed down. Crying my eyes out. My mother... I had been the reason she died. It was my fault.
Without Volta realizing, she grew frustrated. She grew angry, she grew furious at herself. Her emotions triggered a sudden surge of mana she never reached before. An increase of approximately five hundred percent. She clenched her shirt at her chest. She started stuttering in her breathing. Tears flowed down her eyes like heavy rain. Creating a small puddle on the floor. She opens her mouth but no sound she could make. She screamed in complete silence. The surge of mana then subsided. She felt drained. Tired.
She then woke up on the floor. Her eyes were puffy after she cried. Sunlight bashfully showered the room from a bedside window. The sun warmly blankets its light on her. She then sat up straight and grips her necklace. Her heart throbs and her neck tightens. She stood up and walked out of the house. She walked to the train station and got on the first train back to Hursh.
She slept through most of the train ride. She, for some reason, was very tired. She hadn't realized that she expelled that much mana in an instant.
She got off the train and walked back to the school. She was hungry all of a sudden. She headed for the cafeteria. Her movement was slow and shaky. She's still processing everything. Once she made it to the cafeteria, she saw a kid with yellow high neck jacket sitting and eating alone.
"Sam?" She wonders
She starts to pick up her pace and power-walked to him. Turns out it was Sam. She quickly seated herself next to him. This time she actually sped her way there.
"Hi."
"Hey, V. I came by to your room earlier and you didn't answer."
"I was at my house."
"House?"
"My old house." She clarified. She then leans her entire body to Sam's. Her head on top of his shoulder, "is it okay if I do this?" She asked.
"Hehe, it's okay, V."
Sam hears that her nose was stuffy. He thought she was sick, "do you have a cold?"
"No. I've been crying."
"What's wrong?"
Turns out Volta actually carried the letter from her old house. She folded it and pocketed it. She took it out of her left pant pocket and handed it to Sam. He grabs the letter and opens it up. A minute later, Sam was in quite of a shock. He held his mouth closed with his hand. In disbelief.
"I killed her, Sam."
"Y- You didn't kill her."
"I was the reason she's dead now. It's the same thing."
Sam then pushed her away gently and he turns to Volta. He gently holds her cheeks with both his hands, "look at me, V," Sam demanded.
"I have absolutely no idea what you're going through right now, but you have to realize it wasn't your fault." Sam said
"But... But it was..." Her voiced cracked to such a high pitch it was almost like a whisper. Tears ran down her eyes and over Sam's palms.
"She didn't blame you. She couldn't have. She knew she would die but she put that aside for you!"
"..." She stayed silent. Contemplating whether Sam was right or wrong. Her ears were wide open. Feeling drawn to Sam's eyes she couldn't move.
"She wouldn't want you to blame yourself for her death. It was her choice to put her life on the line for your dreams."
"Even if I didn't blame myself... What can I do now?"
"Live on, right? Achieve your goal to be the fastest sorcerer! Make her proud!"
"Can... I do that?"
"Of course you can, V! When you were younger, you broke the sound barrier! What's surpassing Kai's limits? It's completely okay to grieve. But... Don't do it forever."
"P-promise you'll help me out."
"Whatever I can do, I will."
"Promise you won't leave me?"
"I promise, I will never leave you."
Volta spontaneously leaned herself forward and collided her lips with his. She grabs his head and holds him in place for a few seconds. Then she slowly lets him go.
