It's been a week since Aleksei visited my place and then abruptly left. It's been a week, yet his statements continue to perplex me. He didn't respond or explain anything to me. His remarks appear to be a puzzle that I am unable to solve. Therefore, I can't see any possible solution. I can't stop fretting about a certain line that vexes me.
"I'll get right back to you."
It causes my head to hurt just thinking about it. He'll leave me and then return to me? Is that what he's saying? He'll injure me and then beg for my forgiveness. He still treated me as if I were his home, yet he abandoned me and made me feel desolate.
Was I his home, or his hoe?
Knock!
Knock!
I peek at my door, propping my head up, and notice that it's only Athena there. She walked in holding her laptop, placed it on the table, and sat on the couch in front of it.
"Are you okay? You appear anxious."
"My head hurts a little," I say, "so much that I think it'll blow off."
"You should relax for a while; you've been working on your laptop all day," she sighed. "I can do the rest of your chores."
"Thank you," I answered, smiling slightly as I sent her the work that I had almost finished but wanted to finalise. Athena begins working on it as soon as she receives it, and I recline in my chair, shutting my eyes and feeling drowsy, but I grow hungry. I've been hungry for four hours. "Athena?"
"Yes?"
"Could you call for fries and vanilla ice cream?" I said and she stood up. "Please, with chocolate syrup."
"Sure, is that all?" I nodded and resumed my relaxation until I heard her on the phone.
After a few minutes of waiting, I was about to fall asleep when the fragrance of the fries shocked me awake. It's from the delivery man. Athena grabs it and places it on my table before continuing her job. I take a single fry, put it in the ice cream, and eat it until I notice Athena gazing at me strangely.
"It was good," I answered, since her expression said it all.
"I don't believe so."
"Then try it," I said, motioning for her to come over, and I watched her attempt it. I'm waiting for her reply and comment. "So?"
"It's shockingly wonderful," Athena commented, so we decided to buy more so she could have her own.
I'm enjoying mine, which is already on its second round, and Athena stopped her work when there's a knock on my door. Athena just unlocked it for us to see who's the visitor but it's just my lawyer, Caleb. Athena left first, and Caleb entered my office. He went in and I expected him to say something, but instead he sat in the chair in front of me and took my fries and ice cream away from me, eating them by himself the way I do.
"That's mine!" I said, but he brushed it aside.
"Why are you eating them this way? You said it was nasty." I glare at him. He was the one who introduced me to this method of combining fries with ice cream. It was horrible the first time I saw him dip the fries in the ice cream; Athena had the same response as I did the first time I saw him do it. "The finicky eater is eating something she claims is nasty."
I frown at him as he resumes his tormenting before pointing out the door and telling him it's not locked and he can now leave, but he just laughs and says he'll stop, which I know he won't.
"What brings you here?" I inquired.
"To eat."
"Are you on the verge of going bankrupt? Do you require money?"
"Do I need a purpose to meet with my client?"
"This is not the requisite way to visit a client, you asshole," I say as I roll my eyes at him and continue to just watch him consume my snacks since it doesn't seem enough for him and he enjoys it, so I let him. "But seriously, why are you here?"
"There will be no hearing next month, but the documents will still be handled," I nodded, unsure how to respond. It's not like I didn't expect him to come here with nothing to do with the divorce. He, too, is a busy man. "However, the court may issue your divorce with him sooner because everything you and him are associated with has already been cut at the second hearing."
It will be granted sooner or later…
Nothing can stop it now, huh?
So it was never "To the moon and back" but… "To the moon and never be back."
