Chapter 37 - Divine Beast

"It's been five days since my dearest friends, that came to my village's rescue died, in the battle between them and the wolves, my wife, Jessi has also died while acting as a healer.

"I have stolen something from the dungeon in rage... I don't know for sure what it is... but if it is what I think it to be... I have stolen something divine.

"I was correct. What I have stolen is a Divine Beast! A wolf egg whose hatchling can surpass the Emperor rank. I fear what will happen of the village, I will have to set my tracks away to the other villages to divert the wolves' attention.

"My plan was successful, the dungeon has been emptied, I told everyone that the two adventures had been successful and have made them the hero's of our village... that's the least I can do.

"I am horrible... utterly horrible! Because of me, the other village was destroyed. I should return the egg.

"Miracle! The egg can create a miracle! Upon reaching the Divine rank, the Beast the flip life and death. Maybe there is hope for my love.

"I loath every one of the city Knight's, I loath all the members of the Ruod clan... because of them, their negligence, more villagers have started to be targeted by the wolves... but they don't help. Just wait, after the Divine Beast awakens, I will rend them all.

"The Divine egg may take decades to hatch... no wonder it hasn't moved for the past two and a half decades.

"The wolves have returned! I again begged the Knights and the Ruod's for their help. I even posted a request in the clans... but those damned Ruod's have forbidden anyone to aid us. They are holding a grudge to this date. Just wait, I will definitely destroy them.

"Doomed... we are doomed. The daughter of my friends... our heros, reported a sighting of wolves near the village, even she would've died had not been for a nobleman passing by, should I end her and Rio away? Since they haven't given up on the egg... The egg has started to show movements too. I just need to hold out until it hatches, the first one it lays sight upon will become its everything.

"My accursed life... it was all for naught... our villager has been attacked by wolves. I sent the young Rio into the basement with the egg... maybe if he can hold out till the egg hatches, he will own the cub... and all these wolves will be nothing in front of him then... I hope... I hope Reka and Rio live... All of this is my fault... I wish they could... forgive me."

Kobi stared at the diary in a trance, reading aloud its last to Reka who listened with a twisted expression.

The air weighed down heavily and silence prevailed for a while, before Reka gazed outside the window, "Chief... It was all our village Chief's fault... it's his fault that Rio died."

Kobi continued to gaze forward blankly, his hand crippling the paper within his fist.

'So... it wasn't me? Whose fault this all is?' He felt his body going limp, unknowingly, a smile spread on his face. Before vanishing and being swallowed by rage, 'But that merely means... there's more a reason to destroy those wolves... more than ever!'

He heaved a sigh and gazed at Reka, hugging her knees, she was gazing into the far distance.

"Reka... before anything... we should prepare for the villagers' funeral."

His voice drifted over and brought tremors in Reka's silent body.

"Yes... we should."

As she readied herself to go out, Kobi opened the commission's slot and gazing at today's commission, he couldn't help but marvel, 'Is the system being too compassionate or what? Shik also felt somewhat off today.'

[1- Dig a pit.

2- Bury someone.

3- Prepare for revenge.]

Shik, hearing his thoughts, shook his head, "The system's meant to help you get stronger... not to get you killed."

Kobi chuckled and nodded, he had started to feel something was going to change soon.

Time passed by as He and Reka started to dig a large pit near the village, where the other deceased were buried. Night fell by the time they finished and started to collect remains of the villagers.

Some where half of what they used to be. Some were burned alive and some were... too young to have died.

They collected them all and by the village's custom's, waited till it hit twelve before taking all the corpses and laying them in the pit.

Then Kobi asked Reka, "Are you going to pray? Or leave?"

But her face, pallid and sallow, gave him no answer. And he quietened down and raised his hands, like her.

He was done shortly after but Reka continued to stand and the more she did, the more Kobi felt a terrifying aura burn out of her.

It felt lie centuries had passed as he gazed at her back, branded with a ghastly mark she had yet to notice in her anguish, which slowly started to tower over him.

After some time, which, after gazing at his system's clock, he realized to be two hours, she finally moved, "Lets go."

The moon cast down their shadows ahead of them and Reka trampled over her's with sheer wrath, "This Divine Beast... in the letter Jake spoke off, is the source of all cause, no?"

Kobi nodded, "...I can't answer that." His expression turned conflicted.

"Lets rest tonight... tomorrow we will gather our gear and do preparation before heading to the dungeon." Her feet abruptly halted, she glanced at his face and muttered solemnly, "You don't have to come... there's no need for an outsider to get involved in our village's mess. You leave tomorrow."

Kobi's lips twitched, he shook his head and rebuked, "I don't take orders from you, village girl."

Reka frowned, 'Are you... planning on dying too?'

"Sleep tight tonight... Tomorrow is going to be busy." Kobi chuckled and slammed the door shut, swinging to the only bed in Jake's house and flumping down on it.

There was another bed in the house but... it was occupied by a corpse.

Reka, not feeling anything unusual, was about to lay down on the floor... like her routine days with Kobi.

When the latter peeked up and patted beside him, "Come on, don't make me look like a bitch. Sleep here."

Reka, dumbfounded, gazed at Kobi, wondering if he was for real.

Before suddenly, she let loose a strange chucked and proceeded to lay beside him, "Sure."

'The closer we sleep the better.' Kobi sighed in relief as he laid down beside her, thankful that she didn't reject him, while taking in her sweaty scent. But he realized he was no better.

As he gazed at her, he couldn't help but mutter, "Now that I look at you... aren't you quite flat? You have been wearing my clothes but they... don't seem too tight!"

Reka's shut eyes suddenly shot wide, her baffled expression seemed to ask just how was he in the mood for this kind of conversation.

"Ahem!" Kobi faked a cough and made a resolute face, "Since we are gonna be partners in crime soon, it was best I took in your measurements so I knew what to expect."

Reka rolled her eyes and turned around, a small smile on her face, 'You never change... that's good. You felt down in the morning, but it's nice to have you back... Now I can go the way I want, without fearing what it might cost.'

Her smile receded with her gaze drifting away, "Don't die... Kobi. Get away from this place... so that you can live the life I and Rio could never live."

Kobi's body turned stiff, he gazed at the ceiling and sighed, "I will make sure you life the life you want to live."

Reka smiled and fall sound asleep. While Kobi busied himself with the rollete, 'I have three spins... let's hope I get something good!' A smile appeared on his face.
