Chapter 1 - 1 - THE BAD NEWS

On a sunny afternoon, Friday precisely. The environment seemed to be quiet. I took my lunch and showered. I was about having my siesta, when a knock was heard on the door.

I came into the sitting room and asked the house help if she was expecting anyone, in which she replied no. I opened the door with mixed feelings and met my aunt with my dad's cousin at the door. I was dumbfounded at first, as I wasn't expecting their visit.

"Won't you allow us come in? You witch!"

My aunt shouted and I was shocked.

"You mannerless brat, Can't you greet!" My uncle added.

"Am sorry aunty Linda and uncle David. Good afternoon, Please come in." I said in a shaking voice as they came in and I closed the door. They sat down while I went into the kitchen to get two glasses of juice. I returned and placed it gently on the side stools, then sat down opposite them.

"I... hope there is no problem aunty and uncle?"

"There is a problem, but it isn't our problem. It is yours." My aunt began.

"As you know, there is a very important call that every human must obey and can't stop from coming. Unfortunately your parents had responded to that call, and nothing can bring them back." I adjusted my sitting position.

"Sorry aunt, please what do you really mean?" I asked, preparing for the worst.

"Your parents are dead! So face it!" My Uncle said coldly. That word 'dead', sent goose bumps to my body. At that moment, I felt like the room was spinning around me.

#could it really be true? #

" Aunty, uncle please tell me that you are joking? or is this a dream? If so, please someone kindly wake me up!" I cried in despair.

"Am I dreaming, please someone wake me up!" My aunt mimicked.

"See this spoilt thing! You had better believe it. Nonsense!" My uncle said.

"Noooooooo!" I screamed and lost consciousness.

Some minutes later, I had regained Consciousness. By then, my aunt and uncle had left. Fatima the house help, came to me and handed over a letter. I grabbed and tore open the letter, then read it.

"My God! why are all these happening now? First my parents are dead, now a letter to vacate this apartment! Heavens, a child of fifteen, where do I go? Are these still dreams?"

I said in tears. Fatima drew close to me and consoled me.

"Madame, no matter wetin you go pass through, God dey see am, him go help you. Just cheer up, no mind Satan"

"Oh Fatima, you won't understand. Why will life choose to treat me this way? Why me?" I cried some more, but this time, at her shoulder.

"Take heart abeg. wetin we fit do now?" I wiped my tears.

"Let's pack our things, since that's what they want." I slowly went into my room and packed my belongings into some travelling bags. In slow strides, I went into my parents room and took out a copy of their picture. Then brought out some money, from my dad's wardrobe. I went back to the sitting room, where Fatima had already packed her stuffs.

I gave her some money, and kept some for myself. I took a finally look at the house, and left. Fatima and I hugged and parted in tears.
