Rowan sighed. “I messed up, Mila. I have pushed you so far and hurt you for the sake of something I am not even sure we will ever have.”
He covered his eyes with his hand. His hand trembled. He dropped his hand.
“I’m sorry for hurting you. I know apologies will never be enough, especially after all I have said and done. I need you to realize I would not do this if it didn’t keep you from getting hurt.”
Mila’s eyes squinted. “I’m already hurting, Rowan. My mate doesn’t want me. That hurts,” Mila croaked.
She looked at him, hoping to see some response that wasn’t his usual cold demeanour. What she saw shocked her.
For the first time, Rowan looked at her with raw need. It was as if the ice walls guarding his soul had lifted, and she got to see a glimpse of her real mate.
Her heart skipped a beat.
A knock on the door transformed her dream mate back into the ice cold Alpha so fast Mila was sure she had been dreaming.
‘Am I going crazy?’ she asked herself. “Come in.”
