Chapter 3 - Pragmatic Pedagogy

Raindrops can be heard flowing off the glass, pages can be heard rustling. The young woman, barely twenty-three years old, glanced at the clock on her desk. She stood up calmly, and her jet black hair slowly slipped out of its straight bun. Quickly, she lined up stacks of thick books and folded papers, some of which had markings on the inside. She was dressed in a black cloak with a tiny bit of green lace. Ceri Cadwyn - Professor II is embroidered in green on a badge edged in gold and wraps the sleeve. She filed everything away neatly and secretly in a drawer under the desk. She looked around the tidy room, then left the office.

"Good afternoon, Professor." A swarm of students was greeted as she walked past the wide corridor of the College of Allied Health and Sciences. The students also had a badged of green and gold on their chest, symbolizing their specialization in healing and sciences. Others just bowed upon seeing her, mostly students from other faculty taking prerequisites in the building. Ceri simply acknowledges their greeting by nodding her head.

"Good day, Prof!"

"Prof, I can help you carry the books!" A sturdy young man, who seems to be seventeen, has a badge of red. He cheerfully bowed to the professor and shyly scratched his neck from the strange eyes he received from the students.

"You're from the Knights? What is a young trainee doing here? As far as I know, the Knighthood is on a practical mission in Northenshire." She curiously asked helplessly giving the heavy books to the young man.

"Ah, I was injured from the last mission, Ma'am."

"Then you are in no position to help me, give me that. " She tried to snatch the books away and immediately examined his entire body for signs of illness. The young man flushed in deep red as he struggled to answer while escaping the eyes of the keen professor.

"N-no, ma'am. I am done with my treatment. I just happen to pass by and saw you." Ceri did not reply and looked straight ahead. The young man was looking at the back of the professor, walking gracefully. The youngest woman who achieved the second level of a professorship at twenty-three. He often heard the professor's name during training on how she was a beauty but rarely smiled. The horrors of how she failed an entire class last semester were famous throughout the university. It caused quite a ruckus from the parents who could not accept the failing grades.

The professor halted after reaching a door with a sign, "Human Anatomy 1301." The young knight almost bumped his head from the sudden stopped. "You may go back from whatever you've come from. " When she opened it, fifty students followed her to a lectern. The room was thoughtfully fashioned for use as an anatomy lecture hall. There was a faint hint of disinfectant left behind from the previous session. Extensive tables and anatomical models are contained in a cylindrical case. The most significant is a fetus stored named Jill. The cadaver room is off to the corridor's left for dissection.

"She's here." A female student whispered to her seatmate. The students noticed the professor's presence. Thus they sat erect and arranged the notes they needed in this class. The sound of papers and whispers can be perceived.

"Have you studied the vasculature of the lower extremity?"

"No, how would I be able to study it? I can't even finish the clinical notes."

The professor finished arranging the books and tools. At the drop of the book, the students finally shut their mouths. An eerie ambiance filled the hall. Ceri adjusted her eyeglasses and picked up a thick sheet of paper.

"Good day, class. Are you ready?" She asked quietly. She could see the nervous eyes of the students; some were still reading the handouts, hoping that the information would be retained in their memories.

"No."

"Yes."

Professor Cadwyn smiled at the mixed answers. The students grew more nervous. She sauntered in front of the podium. "Fret not, if you've been paying attention in class and studying the materials, this should be a breeze. Remember that passing my course does not depend solely on memorizing a ton of information. This is to make a difference in the lives of your patients and enhance the well-being of the people we serve." The students exhaled in relief as if holding their breaths the whole time. The professor flipped a page and called one of the students.

"Now, let's see... Ms. Green. Is Ms. Green here?" She inquired. A petite young girl slowly stood up from her seat. All students draw their attention to their classmates. The girl fixed some of her hair from her face and straightened up her clothes.

"I'm here, Professor." She said in a small voice.

"Okay, let's say we had a 58-year-old farmer accidentally hit with a scythe by a coworker while they were harvesting wheat. He had such severe bleeding that he had to be admitted to the nearby clinic. During the physical examination, the doctor noticed a foot drop and felt a sensation on the foot's dorsum and the posterior calf's skin. What do you think is nerve severed in this case?" The student's hands began shaking. The students, who were not yet asked, read the handouts recalling the answer. The professor only stood up and waited for the reply. "I-I I-think it's the deep peroneal nerve, Ma'am." She nervously answered.

"Ms. Green, that is correct. You may sit down. The farm instrument has injured the common fibular nerve's fibular (peroneal) branch. We all know that it is extremely vulnerable to injury as it arises at the neck of the fibula. The muscles denervated are largely dorsiflexors of the foot; hence foot drop and what gait can occur, Mr. Capell?"

"High stepping gait, Prof." The young man with glasses answered confidently. "High stepping gate can also occur. Sensation on the dorsum of the foot is still present, which means that the superficial branch is mostly intact. Do you understand?"

"Certainly, Professor/Yes."

"This is a question for you, Mr. Byron. The female knight's right leg was crushed between the wheels of a carriage after it overturned. She lost the ability to fully straighten her right knee after the incident. Which nerves did they most likely damage?"

"I believe it's the sciatic nerve?" Unsure of his answer, the student fidgeted with his handouts while gazing warmly at the professor.

"Are you asking me or telling me?" Ceri queried. "Telling you, it's the sciatic nerve, Ma'am."

The professor amusingly picked chalk and drew the entire lumbar plexus of the lower extremity. The lumbar plexus arises from the lumbar and sacral spinal column. It mainly supplies the muscles of the lower limbs. She proceeded to give exact names to all of the nerve ganglia. "Why do you think it's the sciatic nerve?"

"Uh, since it supplies the extensor muscles?"

"What are the extensors of the knee, Mr. Byron? Let's recall some of them."

"Quadriceps femoris muscles?"

"Yes, and what nerve innervated those?"

"Sciatic-oh wait, Oh! It's the femoral nerve, Ma'am. My mistake." All students sighed in relief, and the professor continued with the recitation.

"That is all for today, class. Kindly prepare for our moving practicals on 25th. I will not leave any homework, do not forget to take a rest. Should you have queries regarding the subject, visit me during office hours. "

"Mr. Astley, come here." Ceri leaned on the desk. Astley was stunned by the call but smiled from ear to ear as he strode towards the stern professor.

"Have I done something wrong?" He asked in close proximity. From the outside, they may be very close. The educator dismounted and stepped backward.

"Could you please stop sending letters to the manor? As your professor, it is extremely unpleasant, and I would not tolerate it."

"But Ceri, I-"

"Professor, Mr. Astley. You should not lose sight of the fact that we are on the campus grounds."

"Fine, Professor. But we are about to be engaged; I think it is time for you to settle down and raise my children; my father is willing to give the Astley Mining if we are tied in a knot."

"Your delusions are quite severe, Mr. Astley. Pass by the clinic to check on your mental status. It sounds like you suffer a recent blow of the head. Is my class that difficult for you?"

"My lady-"

I made myself clear that marriage is something I care about. Let this be our last exchange on this topic, as I dread every second of it. If you'll excuse me. " The man has been quite stubborn since the previous year. He is the second son of a wealthy merchant in the capital. During the entrance exam interview, the professor was one of the subject's examiners and grew interest in her.

Ceri strode into the quiet corridor of the College of Allied Health and Sciences. The columns of the building have a similar design to Greek Corinthian. There is a greenhouse that can be seen from quite a distance.

If you're looking for the best education on the continent, look no further than Westhall University. About a thousand students and fifty teachers call this place home. West of the Alcester City, the imperial capital of Von, the fortress covers an area of about 5,000 acres. Westhall is a pioneer in the realms of learning and truth. Those who come here to study, investigate, educate, cultivate, and advance join a community of people who have been doing the same for nearly two centuries. University efforts have been directed toward fostering a sense of community that values and promotes diversity and inclusion for all students, regardless of race, status, ethnicity, or belief system, thereby expanding access to educational opportunities for all.

There are five primary academic schools within the university: the College of Allied Health and Sciences, the College of Mathematics and Engineering, the Westhall Business School, the Darius Louis Von IX Law School, and the College of Arts and Letters. It also offers courses which focuses on skills, such as the Squires of Fire, the knighthood order of Westhall, and the Westhall Technical School.

Hundreds of graduates have gone on to positions at the Royal Court as merchants, doctors, nobles, or even monarchs.

Ceri kept her pace despite the throbbing pain in her head, which caused her to temporarily close her eyes. Her heart is pounding in her ears, and the roof of her mouth is dry.

"Can I speak with you, Professor Cadwyn?"
