Chapter 16 - Petty and Perfect

"Do you want to talk about it?" Violet asked, placing her hand softly on his back.

Deon stayed quiet for a minute before nodding and lifting his head off her shoulder. "Would you like to go for a walk?" When she nodded, he moved forward to open the door, his body only inches from hers and Violet sucked in a breath, taking a whiff of his scent.

'Violet focus!' She chastised herself.

They made their way into the elevator, none of them speaking until they got outside."Oh," Violet grabbed her arms. The sweater she wore was not thick enough to protect her from the chilling wind. She had known it would be cold but she didn't think it would be this cold.

"Wait here, I'll grab a jacket for you." Deon started to turn but she grabbed on to his arm.

"I'm not that cold honestly, it was just . . . surprising how cold it was." She chuckled .

Deon smiled "That doesn't sound convincing, I don't want you to Catch a cold."

"I'm fine, seriously." Violet smiled.

Deon hummed, but before he could further protest, Violet walked down the street,Smiling as she did. Sighing, he followed after her, walking down the dimly lit street.

"I'm going to have to leave for a while." he said after four minutes of silence.

"Oh, you have a job out of town?"

"Yes, something like that, some unfinished business"

"Will you be back soon?

"Hmm."

"Is it dangerous?"

Deon smiled "You know, When you really think about it, there's a possible danger in every job" He paused mid-stride, turning to her with, his dimples showing as the street light cut across his face.

Violet returned his smile, also pausing to take in his beautiful face. "So, it is dangerous."

"It is not," he lied. "Not wanting her to worry about him.

"Should I believe that?" She looked away from him, her lips tilting downwards.

Deon's heart ached when her face fell. "It's cold outside, let's go back in." He ran his hand through his hair, pulling on the ends briefly. His brother had been right, he shouldn't have gotten involved with her, but he only thought that because his heart ached seeing the sadness on her face. If anything, he did not regret knowing her and their time together.

As they approached the intersection leading to her house, Deon slowed down. "Will you stay with me tonight? Just stay, I won't do anything that makes you uncomfortable."

"Yes" she replied as though she had been waiting for him to ask and she had. Violet's heart squeezed in her chest as tears threatened to fill her eyes. 'Did I like him this much?' She wondered, blinking back the threat.

Once they got inside his apartment again, Deon pulled her into his arms. "I'm sorry."

Violet could only nod and close her eyes to prevent the tears from falling. placing her arms around his back as she felt him stroke her hair, she mumbled something unintelligle.

"I hope you don't hate me." Deon said, letting go of her and chuckling nervously.

"Maybe I should but I like you too much, apparently." She wiped her eyes.

Deon's heartbeat slowed, beating steadily, sadly, as he caressed her cheek, lifting her chin up and looking into her teary eyes. 'Oh dear God' his breath caught, taking in the vulnerability in her eyes and her full lips which were slightly parted. "Violet" he murmured, his fingers moving softly over her upper lip, like a feather. Taking his fingers off her upper lip, he carressed her cheek again as she looked at him with eyes that made him unable to think straight. 'Gideon don't! That would be unfair to her. Gideon Sanders, do not–' His thought was cut short when his thumb moved across her full lower lip, it was so soft. He could feel it, he wanted to taste it, his body craved it.

"Gideon." she called out to him in a soft voice that sounded more like a moan, her lips parting under his thumb as her eyes stared up at him with a similar need.

Lowering his head, Gideon aimed for her lips wanting, needing to taste her. But just as their lips were inches apart, Gideon groaned and veered off to her cheek. "Violet." He murmured, kissing her cheek, moving to the corner where her lips met, letting his tongue rest there for a second before sucking on it.

Violet stiffened as all the hairs on her body stood on end when he did that, her knees growing weak as her fingers grabbed onto his arms for support. "Ah" Her eyes closed and a moan escaped her lips. Granted, Violet was a novice in a few things but she had been kissed before and never felt like this, she knew it wasn't even a proper kiss, but with an arm around her small waist and the other flat on her back, she felt hot all over, she was burning up in a way her imaginations couldn't fathom.

The moan that came from her lips sent Deon over the edge as he grabbed her tighter and pushed her up against the wall, sinking his lips into her neck, tasting, licking, sucking and groaning into her neck as she grabbed his hair. Like cold water poured over him however, the nagging voice was back. "You'll regret this, stop it." It took a few seconds but Deon heeded, hardly letting go of her but stopping the assault on her neck and burying his facing in her shoulder, letting out hot breaths breathing heavily to calm himself.

Violet was no different, she also breathed heavily, loosening her hands clutching his hair but not letting go. 'Oh' she thought as her heart raced in her chest. 'What just almost happened?'

"I'm sorry, I know I said I wouldn't do anything that made you feel uncomfortable." Deon said when his breathing stabilised. 'It's those damn beautiful eyes, what can do when they look at me like that.' He inwardly groaned.

"I enjoyed it."

"Hah." Deon let out a breath, "Don't say that so easily, you'll make me go crazy again."

Violet smiled. "Thank you for stopping." she chuckled. She had enjoyed it, she had enjoyed it too much, too much. If he hadn't stopped then she knew she'd eventually stop him of course, she was fifty-one percent sure. She calmed herself.

A few hours later, after bathing–separately– they cuddling in the sofa. It wasn't uncomfortable since it was wide. Deon sat in the couch with his legs stretched towards the end of it while Violet sat in between his legs with her back resting on his chest. Deon's arms settled on her stomach as he thought about how soft her body was.

"Deon!" she huffed, lifting herself off his chest to give him a glare. "Are you listening?"

"Of course," he chuckled, placing both hands on her arms and pulling her back to him. "You were telling me about how much you and brother fought when you were teenagers."

"Hmph." She pouted, tilting her head to look up at him. Deon looked down at her pretty face and smiled, kissing her nose. The reaction was immediate as her cheeks heated up and she looked down.

Deon laughed. "You are so cute."

"Pfft." she huffed then after a few minutes, she asked. "How was growing up with Professor?"

"Matthew?" Deon raised an eyebrow then smiled and after a few seconds he . "We didn't really grow up together, mostly because of the age gap. He had already finished college before I even started walking. I only saw him once in a while and even then we didn't talk much, only the common courtesy. Then Dad died and that was the end of our relationship, if there was even one." He paused, and Violet said nothing, only placing her hand on his which was tapping on her belly.

"I didn't see him after our father died, then I went to college and we met again."

"Oh, did he lecture in your school?"

"No... actually, it's a long story. I'll tell you the full version some other time, the short is that I got in trouble a lot and a friend of mine reached out to him for help."

Violet smiled, something about his voice let her know that it was serious but at the same time, she was aware that he didn't want to go into it. "A troublemaker huh?" she teased.

Deon laughed. "Troublemaker?" He tickled her and she giggled.

"Stop." Violet tried to protect her sides but considering her position, it was useless and Deon took advantage of it.

"A troublemaker huh? You have to take it back." He tickled even harder and she burst out laughing, with tears in her eyes.

"Sorry, sorry, you're not a troublemaker." I deserve to be punished, how dare I call a top consultant a troublemaker." She laughed. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

"Hmm." Deon grinned. "That's much better."

"Petty." she mumbled, patting down her hair which was all over the place.

"Pe- what?" he moved closer to her.

"Perfect!" she stuck her tongue out and scoffed.

Deon chuckled. "So cute." he pinched her cheeks and she slapped his hands off, looking like an upset kitten. Deon laughed again, resting his palm behind him on the sofa just as the light went out.

"Oh, hold on, this building has a back up gener–" Before he could finish speaking, the sofa dipped, soft hands cupped his cheeks and something soft touched his lips. Deon froze for a second when Violet kissed him before returning the kiss.

Whatever thought he had to not kiss her so he would not hurt her vanished. However, he didn't touch her for fear that he would not let her go so, he let her lead the kiss. Opening up when her tongue touched his bottom lip, he kissed her back soft and sweet. A minute into the kiss, she retreated, and just then, the back up generator lit up the room. Deon looked up to see her eyes and lips smiling at him and his heart knocked against his chest. 'She is so beautiful.' Just then, Deon knew that the lies he'd been telling himself the past few days were just that, lies. Deon returned her smile, pulling her down to his chest.

'If she moves on before I come back, I'll let her go?' What an absolute lie, selfish or not, he was not going to let her go. If she really moved on before he came back, then the guy would just have to disappear, willingly or unwillingly. He was not a stranger to making people disappear after all.

Violet closed her eyes, smiling as the feeling of his lips, the taste of him had her feeling satisfied unaware of the sinister thoughts going through Deon's mind.

Deon stroked her hair as the wild instincts in him burrowed to the surface. 'She's mine.'
