Adeline’s POV
Dianne left a few days after our amusement park outing. It was hard to see her go, even though I was ready to sleep in my own bed and I knew Zale would be happy to have his room all to himself again. She had gathered Zale and I into the living room the afternoon before she left and sat us down to talk to us about… marriage, of all things.
The things she had said were sweet and only further cemented the guilty feeling that was brewing inside of me. Take care of each other, talk things out, and never raise your voice. Those were the three pieces of advice she had given us.
And, in classic fake marriage fashion, the moment she left those rules didn’t matter to us anymore.
It wasn’t like Zale and I were unhappy, or screaming at each other every hour of the day—or ever, for that matter— but we weren’t really married either. So there wasn’t much talking involved in our little arrangement.
