Chapter 1 - My teachers dead

Part 1

It's interesting how blood flows, that's what I thought as the teacher I hated for most of this semester was being mauled by the janitor, I began to regret my thoughts about her.

About 60 minutes earlier I was your average nerd sitting in my 4th period English class. The only thing remarkable was I was the top student in the country and head of my school's student council.

I loved my English teacher, each time I answered a question she praised my genius. My ego increased 10 fold each and every time I walked into her class.

I had my whole life ahead of myself, I was top of my class but I hated to overexert myself. Brilliant but lazy is what all my teachers called me.

I was the quiet kid in class, didn't have many friends, never had a girlfriend. I pitied them as I thought they could never begin to grasp my genius, my absolute divine intellect.

Looking back at it I wish I never did that.

I walked into class and took my seat. I sat in the middle-left of the class right by the window; the one thing I seem to pay attention to. The school's 'popular girls' approached my desk and asked me for help with their homework.

The 'leader' of the group Yume Yashiro showed me her notebook and opened it to the question she needed help with.

She was tall and beautiful with the body of a goddess in complete contrast with my frail nerdy build, she had long dark hair and black eyes. Her eyes were assertive emotionless eyes like mine, Your stereotypical high school mean girl.

Then there were the other two Minami Kinoshiba and Aoi Akizuko, Minami had short pink hair and was overly energetic.

Aoi had messy lilac purple pigtails; her eyes were the same color, although they always looked sleepy and half-opened. I may or may not have had a crush on her.

Yume slammed the book on my desk, almost demanding I help her with it. She stared at me and I stared right back. Minami on the other hand gave me puppy dog eyes and cowered behind the book.

"Pleaseeeeeee Saki, I neeeeeeeeeeeed your help." she pleaded.

Before I could even reply Aoi shoved her book in my face

"You too, Aoi?" I asked her

She pouted then looked away trying to avoid eye contact and let out the infamous tsundere "hmph"

"...Please Saki-Kun" she asked as if it burdened her to do so.

I patted her head and smiled at her

"Ew, you got nerd on you!" Someone in the background said as they threw a paper ball at my head

She also felt it was necessary to call me "Creep."

I could never turn Aoi down. She was one of the only people besides my parents who I was ever close with besides my best friend Jimanji Ida and Yamada-Sensei.

We used to walk to school together every day until she moved from Tokyo to Saitama. She was my best and first friend.

I took her book and began to explain the question. Then Aoi's piece of shit boyfriend Shinichi walked up to me

Luckily before he could hex me with his ignorance the teacher Yamada-Sensei walked in.

"Everyone take your seats please." she said as she walked in

Before Shinichi took a seat he planted his left hand on my desk and looked at me with these menacing eyes and said

"I thought… I told your bitch ass not to touch her Saki"

"Shinichi please take a seat." Yamada-Sensei interrupted

Yamada-Sensei was the school's laid-back young teacher, most of the time, but when it was time for things to get serious you best believe she got serious.

She gave us a lecture on grammar and conjugations. I accidentally dozed off staring into the window.

I was daydreaming most of the class; dreaming of Yamada-Sensei.

Yamada-Sensei was single which said a lot about the idiots in today's society, Yamada-Sensei needs someone like me.

Yamada-Sensei always looked out for me in school. I always liked her; the way she carries herself, professional but not afraid to have fun.

How could I not have feelings for Yamada-Sensei after all she was the first and only girl I slept with.

If only I was born 10 years earlier maybe we could have had something. Regardless, there was still another girl I loved, Aoi, my childhood sweetheart.

Ever since we were 8 we were inseparable, there's a saying behind every great man is a greater woman.

She proved that to be true, I don't think I could ever become the prestigious man I am now without her behind me. She was the first person I fell in love with.

I wasn't always a loner. I used to be rather popular when she was around.

We made a promise to each other that we'd always be one step beside each other. Unfortunately, that promise crumbled into a thousand and one-pieces, the third year of middle school when she moved to Saitama.

After she moved I was left devastated and alone. The only person I had besides my parents was Jimanji; he always tried to cheer me up, but nothing could stop my brooding.

She moved back to Tokyo for High school we're now 2nd years.

She's changed in every way she went from being energetic and playful to always sad and sleep-deprived. It's pitiful, every time I make eye contact with her eventually I slip past the half-opened sleepy eyes and look beyond that. Which led to her hating making eye contact.

What I see is a girl begging to be saved. Every time I approach her, someone always interrupts, most of the time it's her boyfriend Shinichi.

I recall a conversation I had with her.

"Why are you still dating him Aoi?"

"Because Saki it's not tha-"

"-NO, If he treats you so badly, why don't you just leave him? I can't stand seeing you like this."

"DAMNIT SAKI YOU NEVER LISTEN TO ME… SHINICHI IS NOT A BAD PERSON." She screamed at me and ran away crying.

When she said that her eyes opened all the way up; they were full of emotion for what felt like the first time in forever.

That emotion was sadness, it was begging for salvation, it was tired of feeling isolated, pain translated into this emotionless attitude.

Kind of like me. I think that's why she wanted me to save her, someone who was in the same boat as her.

Ironic, I call everyone around me stupid but I'm truly ignorant for not realizing what was in front of me… a fucking mirror.

I went to chase after her but Jimanji stopped me and told me to give her time

Shinichi is one of the school's popular kids, decent grades but an outstanding athlete it seems everyday it's either him or Lance who picks on me.

I pay them no mind, no use on wasting my breath on meatheads like them.

Part 2

Meanwhile, a man who looks like he's just been mauled by a pack of wolves musters enough energy to climb the fence around the school and snook past the security guards who clearly aren't doing their jobs.

"Hey Bill, how are ya?"

"Great! How's the kids?" They chat amongst themselves oblivious to the half-dead man who just snuck past them.

"N…Nurse" The man screams for help with all his might but all that came out were puny cries for salvation.

Limping down the school halls the man makes it to the nurse's office as the staff surround. Even though they're him scared to approach.

"W…water, please… nurse" the man pleaded as he collapsed in front of the nurse's office, dead.

His eyes rolled back, when you looked into them all you could see was white. Like a plain canvas but the word, 'agony' was drawn so boldly on it.

The cold carcass that laid on the floor began to jerk its way up and off the floor, its stiff movements and slow movements as if he, no, as if it was in pain.

It limped towards the nurse, then one of the teachers hit it in the head. It fell on top of the nurse and bit a chunk of her leg off. Everybody who witnessed it was left in shock, including the teacher who had hit it. The thing got up, turned around, and faced the teacher.

The teacher opened his mouth to scream, put his hand on his forehead pinning him to the wall, and bit his tongue off.

The thing started to devour the teacher as his silent screams echoed the halls of the school.

Now there were three of them: the man, the teacher, and the nurse.

Part 3

I hear a faint voice calling my name…

"Saki… Saki, Saki!"

I woke up from my trance and I was back in my math class.

I thought to myself it's interesting how blood flows, as I watched my school's janitor tearing through the flesh of the teacher I hated most.

I heard Aoi scream and my head turned to see her boyfriend Shinichi fighting off the undead corpse of my classmates. Including Aoi's friends.

Jimanji and I grabbed a chair to help fight.

"NO, WE CAN'T FIGHT THEM ALL OFF GRAB AOI AND LEAVE FORGET ABOUT ME! PLEASE SAKI!"

Those selfless words left me puzzled. I would never expect Shinichi to care so much about someone other than himself.

When I looked into his eyes he was petrified, he fought knowing he would die but he didn't want to all the same.

We lived peaceful lives for the most part none of us would've except to die like this. None of us asked for this.

Peace the thing I valued most was destroyed by a bunch of mindless slaves.

I grabbed Aoi's hand and left.

"NO! SHINICHI PLEASE, GOD NO PLEASE SHINICHI I'M BEGGING YOU! LET GO SAKI" She screamed as I ran with her to safety.

We heard Shinichi scream in agony

"AGHH, FUCK WHY DID I RISK MY LIFE TO SAVE THAT BITCH. I'M SORRY MOM, I'M SORRY DAD I COULDN'T BE THE ATHLETE YOU WISHED FOR, WAIT… WAIT PLEASE, AGHHAHA!"

His screams resounded through our ears until they faded into nothingness.

We barricaded ourselves on the roof of the school.

I held Aoi close as her tears dripped down my blood-stained school uniform.

Meanwhile in the Principal's Office sat one troublesome boy who is now on alert alongside a cheating wife and amazing English teacher.

Part 4

{Lance's perspective}

Roughly 30 minutes before the dead attacked the school, it was 5th period I should be in math but I never showed. I was too busy being a delinquent.

I was caught in the janitor's closet having sex with my English teacher Yamada Hisa by a random nerd who passed by.

Yamada-Sensei was always the cool and caring kind of teacher. She never judged a person no matter how they looked or even their profession.

Yamada-Sensei has been around me since the beginning of Highschool, she was so kind and I felt I didn't have to put on my tough-guy facade.

I felt she truly loved me for me and I loved her, even though she's a teacher and I'm her student, I truly felt that she was the one for me.

I haven't always been popular, it wasn't until I hit my growth spurt before high school began and went from being 162 cm to 182 cm that my popularity in school started to grow.

I began getting more attention from girls, the most attention I've ever gotten in my life and it felt great, but that only lasted for so long.

Although my appearance has changed, I myself was unlikeable, deep down I was still that shy kid who wasn't the best with girls and tried to avoid conflict as much as possible.

I didn't realize it at first, but I began to transform myself into a character that everyone loved, but myself.

I hated myself but I was too scared to face that truth. So I decided to change that truth.

First I started by changing the way I dress, then the way I spoke, it went so far that I felt like I was playing a badly dubbed version of myself.

Even after I changed myself I wasn't happy.

I think that's why I loved Yamada-Sensei so much.

She saw past my mask she was the first person to ever do so; the first person who ever told me that I didn't have to put on a mask to be wanted.

I truly started to be myself again, well at least when I'm around her.

I was called into the Principal's office for skipping all my classes today.

I sat there waiting for the Principal to show up with my coach.

I wondered if they will get the head of the student council Saki Shinji, the kid I've been bullying for the past 2 years. Probably not the damn bookworm is probably in class right now.

I sat there nervous unsure if the fate of my football career would be in the hands of Saki Shinji.

Nah, there's nothing to be scared of anyway. They wouldn't do anything drastic to one of the school's best athletes.

I'm quite athletic and a cool person, so I never really lost or got into fights and if any trouble with school arose, the faculty and my coach would make sure it was resolved.

So, I never truly had struggles, my family was set financially, I already had many colleges send letters speaking of scholarships.

To be honest, I was living every high schooler's dream.

Looking back at it I don't think I've ever experienced real conflict.

That's exactly why I couldn't understand why I went from a future lecture from my Principal to running from my dead peers with my Highschool love.

As I run through the halls I hear bloody screams echoing through my ears and to my brain.

On the street just outside the school, I heard an ambulance speeding down the road.

The siren sound was so chaotic it penetrated the hearts of all who heard it with this uneasy feeling.

It was followed by a loud crash and an explosion.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!", I screamed to Yamada-San as we blitzed through the halls, my feet slipping on the Principals blood.

"I don't know, something's up, we need to get the police…" As she said this we both turned a corner to find hundreds of reanimated corpses devouring any student, teacher, or faculty member in their way.

Part 5

We turned to a staircase and prepared to run through it, but we slipped on blood and tumbled down into the basement.

Due to my excessive football training, I took the fall pretty well, but Yamada-San took a pretty hefty fall and injured her leg, I knew this by the black and blue mark across her thigh.

As we examined our surroundings we realized that we are in a closed-off space and the only exit seems to be locked as I pull against the handle and it doesn't budge.

I dropped to my hands and knees in despair and it wasn't until the blood of my late Principal blinded my sight that my eyes were truly open to the reality I was currently living.

My breathing turned more rapid as my head raced, thoughts of my Principal's mutilated body and the innocent and hopeless screams of my peers ranged through my head as the hall began to spin like a Ferris Wheel.

"We're gonna die…we're all gonna die. My mom, my dad, you and me, everyone here is dead…" I whispered to myself over and over as Yamada-Sensei placed a hand on my shoulder for comfort.

Her soft and warm hand felt like pork buns on my skin. It always managed to calm me down.

"I will get you out of here, we will survive this, the police will come and we will all be just fine, I promise." Although she was half my size, Yamada-Kun was ten times braver, but the reality was, not even the police will be coming to save this place.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of citizens crowded streets, railroads, and bridges, all trying to find a means of transportation to get themselves or family to a safe place.

But in all reality, there wasn't a safe place, the entire world was experiencing the same thing, loved ones and lost relatives all emerging from their graves, feasting on the flesh of the living, no sign of how or why it came to be, and no sign of it stopping.

We managed to barricade the entrance to the staircase with a few spare chairs and desk kept here for storage.

I sat there panicking, rocking back and forth, as Yamada-kun searched for an exit, I couldn't understand how she could be so calm in this situation, like a dandelion in a hurricane.

She began to think of a rational means of escape, she decided to take one of the chairs we used to barricade the door shut and launched it through the glass window leading to the outside.

Now that the window was open, we truly got the idea of just what was happening and why the police hasn't shown up yet.

People on the street dying, being eaten alive by their own past friends and family, children crying in the streets, buildings, and cars on fire.

"Huh…it seems god has found we are guilty of sin and this is our punishment…" I sighed as I stood up and began removing the chairs from the door, making a way for the monsters to enter.

"What in the hell are you doing Lance!?" Yamada-Sensei yelled as she crawled out the window onto the blacktop pavement, waving her hand calling to me to follow.

"If God wishes us dead, who are we to deny him…" I continued to remove the barricades, but in my head I didn't do this because of god, I did it because I was scared, scared of dying, but also scared of living in this accursed world any longer, I lost everything.

Before I could weaken the barricade anymore Yamada-kun slid back under the shattered glass window and into the hall and with all her might pushed me out of the way as hundreds of monsters fell on top of her.

I was sent back a few feet and when I looked back up I saw what I thought to be the love of my life being eaten alive, I watched her limbs being ripped apart as she groaned in agony, I watched the life from her eyes fade as I did nothing but stand and watch.

After all, she did, after all, we've been through, I'm the one to end her life, I'm the means to her end.

"L…Lance…L-L…Live…" My eyes widened as I look towards her, as my English teacher, my lover, smiled towards me as hundreds of my undead peers tore through her flesh.

With her last breath, she managed to moan out for me to live and I finally snapped back to reality, I rushed over to the window as the undead followed and managed to crawl out the basement window, onto the street.

I looked around myself frantically as I laid my eyes on the widows of our buildings, each widow was painted red with someone or some people's blood.

As my eyes traced the building I noticed a small group of students on the roof, but I couldn't make out who they were exactly and I fear calling out to them would attract more of those things.

I stood on the sidewalk of the school awkwardly, scared to make any sudden movements, still in shock from what I just witnessed, from what I caused.

Around me I see fire, blood, pure and utter chaos; I notice something big rushing towards me but before it could reach a large semi-truck collides with a car and creates a large explosion sending me flying back.

I struggle to get back on my feet as I realized the large explosion has attracted a large herd of zombies toward my location, I manage to get to my feet and wable in the opposite direction slowly picking up speed.

I make my way into an ally but end up collapsing from exhaustion, I drag my body onto a wall and sit back onto it, as zombies slowly enter the ally way, cornering me.

I close my eyes and apologize to Yamada-Sensei for not fulfilling my promise as I prepare for my untimely death.

Just then, almost as if God has shed his tears on me, the cold and moist feeling of zombie's brains fell onto me like the boom of a shotgun blast ranged through my ears, I looked up to find the shooter sitting on a rooftop with their hand outstretched to me.

"Are you just gonna sit there and die or follow me?"
