After we filled our stomachs with food that barely attracted anyone's attention, we began to discuss our next few days in low voices.

It was my long-unseen shadow guards. Since I sent them to investigate the center of the forest, they seemed to have disappeared. In this relatively open cave, our previous methods of communication weren't very applicable, so I came up with the method of identifying them by scent.
