The weeks after I talked with Commander Grimaldi went painstakingly slow.
I and Milo had spent more than enough time together in training and the new guy Avan had stayed silent refusing to speak with us without it being mandatory.
Honestly, I was dreading the mission and having to be stuck with these two for God knows how long.
Making matters even worse I had to break the news to Theo and he didn't handle it well. We both had an argument but I couldn't do anything about it, since it was direct orders from the Commander and I couldn't resist him or if he did agree to allow me to stay someone else had to go on this dangerous mission and risk their lives, besides it would feel wrong to do that to someone else.
Other than the fact I was terrified that he might choose Theo, putting his life at stake and worst case scenario dying and if that happened I couldn't live with myself if that happened so I stood it out and endured Milo and Avan.
On the morning of our mission, we received our roles: I was going into enemy territory as Elio a scientist for the government, Milo was passing the info onto the Commander and our government and Avan were going to hack into the Brecolian government system. and decipher any important messages I might find on my missions. Once they were done telling us our jobs, we hopped on a train to Autland (a country still trading with both of our countries ). Luckily for us, the army allowed us to take the first class carriage since this was probably the last time we would have any luxury for the rest of the mission.
The train sped past luscious green pastures beaming in the sun. The warmth hit my cheeks juxtaposing the cold icy feel of the carriage. The gorgeous Autland countryside meandered up and down scenic valleys and hills. Growing bored of the view outside my window I turned to see Milo across the table asleep, he looked peaceful(the most he's ever looked around me.) Avan, who looked visibly annoyed, grumbled about how Milo fell asleep on his should.
The journey continued to be quiet and peaceful until we reached the Great Autland port in the morning.
Swiftly, we all put our game faces on and put all our training to work. We snuck onto the cargo ship and manoeuvred between the security guards and the cameras. It was insanely difficult more difficult than I used to and I could tell both Avan and Milo we're feeling the same about the security but I guess it makes sense cause they don't Aladonian soldiers(like us )getting into Brecolia and spying on them and their war plans.
Weaving between the container we finally found a slightly open container and crept in and hide at the back of rates of bananas, we made ourselves comfortable in the tiny crevice at the back. We tried to make ourselves look as inconspicuous as possible so we could avoid getting caught.
A few minutes after we had settled, two security guards approached the container. A glimpse of their flashlights shone into the container. I, Milo and Avan stayed dead still praying the security would not spot us.
My heart rate quickened as I tried to suppress how nervous I was.
They can closer and closer and the shadow of the torch became bigger and bigger
'This operation would be over before it even starts if they find us '
I thought looking up.
Thankfully they came closer and closed the container.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief as soon as the security guards left.
We were all on the ship for around two long days.
It was boring and cramped and dirty but I've experienced worse so I endured it by trying to make conversations with Avan. I didn't bother with Milo since we knew each other for as long as I can remember and I knew every square inch of his life since we had been living together." So," I began, "How long have you been in the Cypher corps for ?"
Reluctantly, he opened his mouth and replied, "For as long as I can remember. ",looking down fiddling with his hands
"Ahh, same with us. I can't remember anything outside of the special forces."
" Same with me (I've known him for a long time )"Milo added.
His remained facing the ground and fiddling with his hands
"Do you know the reason you or we have been chosen for this mission?" Milo asked Avan.
"No, but I suspect that they just chose us as a last-ditch effort for peace before they set the place sky high with bombs."
"That sounds bleak for them, I knowing we are their last chance to be saved ."I guess we better not fuck this mission up especially you Elio ." added milo
I rolled my eyes . If there was anybody id be worried about fucking up tis mission it would be Milo . he's the stupidest guy I've ever met like this guy still struggles to tell the difference between left and right and . . .
The crew members were on the top deck . It was time we gather our stuff and waited they stacked the container and then wait until the coast was clear and sneak of the port .
I know I'm making it sound incredibly easy ,it wasn't . There was bare any hiding spots so we hand to tag a long on the under side of a lorry to escape . unfortunately this resulted in my arms and legs turning numb but it was funny to see Milo complain and struggle
We continued talking until the ship docked at the port where we snuck off the port and hiked to the city centre.
It was quite the hike due to the crazy heat they were having that day like I was in the Sahara desert but we soldiered on and finally made it there. We caught a bus with the money they gave us at the briefing to the safe house.
When we arrived at the safe house it a quite dingy and disgusting not an ideal place to work but it was the perfect place to set up if you didn't want the government finding out what enemy spies were up to we all entered the elevator of the building and rose to the 7th floor and went into apartment room 109.
Exhausted from our journey, we walked slowly through the short corridor to the living room where I found an envelope on the table that was addressed to me with everything I needed to know for the Aeronautical engineer role I was meant to play to infiltrate the 'secret' Brecolian project to bomb Aladonia and more.
Once I had finished reading it I tore it up into little pieces and burned them in my kitchen sink for good measure after that I slumped on my bed and fell sleep.
