Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Gargoyles

I climbed out of the window to stand on the sill and took my sword from its sheath to stab it into the wall outside. It slid between the black bricks tightly, and I used it as something to step on as I made my way onto the roof. Once my feet were on the shingles, I pulled my sword from in between the bricks to return to its place in my belt. I looked around and held onto the metal spikes that lined the top of the triangle-shaped rooftops.

The sound of rumbling thunder was faint above me as I looked up and I noticed that the dark cloud was moving in a spiral. My eyes went to the center of it and saw that it was right above the tallest tower. I realized that the spire of that tower was different from the others. At the top of it, there was a red stone. A ruby in the shape of a teardrop with sharp edges that seemed to be creating a constant storm.

'I guess that makes sense. Witches often need storms to make potions, and it would be easier if one was constant without using their own magic all the time.' I headed over to the tower and somehow managed to climb to the top of it. I grabbed the metal spire the gem was on top of to keep my balance, and I took the ruby from the place it was sitting right after. It was big enough to fully fit in one hand, and as soon as I took it from its holder the storm above me disappeared.

The clear blue sky revealed itself again and my surroundings were silent and peaceful. I looked at the large red stone that was glowing slightly and felt all the power that was inside it. I hesitated before turning to leave. '...This is too easy, isn't it?' Just as I thought that the gargoyles that surrounded the edges of each tower made a sharp movement.

The sound of stones rubbing against each other filled the silence as the gargoyles shaped like demons and dragons moved from their original positions to come in my direction. I quickly jumped down onto another roof as one that was already on the tower tried to swing its stone claws at me. I ran past the others with the ruby in my hand and drew my sword once enough of them blocked my path.

I sliced them into rubble as they jumped to attack, and made my way to the window I came from. I didn't have time to slip through them like I did the spiders, so I continued to fight every one of them. One jumped onto my back and tried to bite me through my armor, and I swung around to throw it off and into some others.

I kicked another as I used my sword to fend off the multiple that attacked. Some fell off the roof and broke apart, and the others I cut through them using my strength. Using so much energy with every swing was starting to weigh on me, but I didn't stop until the last one was a pile of dust at my feet. The silence returned after the leftover rocks fell down the shingles, and I let the arm that held my sword rest and swing downward in exhaustion.

I stepped back for a breather and looked around to make sure there were none left before walking to the window I came from. This time when I reached the end of the dark tower I stabbed my sword in the wall again, but held onto it as I jumped off the roof. I swung back through the open window and onto my feet on the carpet as my sword came loose once I was back inside.

I then held the ruby to my eye level to make sure it was still there and intact. I was relieved once I knew that it didn't get damaged in the fight and continued to look at the bright red of the gem. Honestly, I was tempted to just take it instead of trading it to Theodius. The power I felt inside it was radiating through my hand and I was curious as to what it was capable of.

I shook the feeling off a moment later. 'Focus. The stone of Sudre is far more powerful, and once it's back in one piece who knows what I could do with such magic. Right now all I need is a faster way to complete my mission, and a dragon is the perfect way to do that.'

I put my sword away again and held the ruby as I ran back to the main room where I entered. It was then I remembered that May existed. 'Oh yeah. I wonder if she's dead.' Later I saw the side doorway to that room, along with hearing a lot of ruckus coming from it. I approached the open door with curiosity and it quickly became a surprise once I saw what was going on.

The witch was standing in the center of the room while shaking a broom that had May attached to it. May held on tightly as she yelled at her. "Get the hell off!!" I also noticed that May was covered from head to toe in some sort of pink goo, and the wetness of it was flying off as she was shaken like a wet dog. I raised an eyebrow and the witch had enough. "That's it!" She then flung her off of the stick using magic to overemphasize the swing, and May quickly gained control of her wings before she hit the wall.

My eyes widened as I looked down to see that she was holding the spell book in her arm. The witch became angrier and jumped on her broom to fly up to her. She grabbed the spell book as soon as she could, and they each fought to keep it in their grip. "Give it back!" May struggled to keep the book in her hands but shook her head nevertheless. "No!" May then swung her leg to kick the witch in the side hard enough for her to fall off her broom. "Ah!"

She fell to the ground along with her broom but quickly got to her feet. I noticed that May kicked her in the exact form I taught her how to, and I couldn't do anything but watch them. Suddenly, both the spell book and the ruby started to glow bright out of nowhere.

May took the book into both hands with surprise as she looked at it, and the witch turned to finally see me with the ruby that shared its glow. "What?! How are you alive?! And what are you doing with that?! My ruby isn't part of the quest! Put it back! No one can be in sole possession of both those items or else I'll-!" Before she could finish her sentence two beams of bright gold magic came from both the book and the gem, and headed towards the witch in a flash.

She screamed as the magic surrounded her, and she started to shrink. She grew smaller until just a pile of her clothes remained. The beams disappeared after she was gone along with the glow the book and gem emitted, and May and I stood still for a moment while processing what just happened.
