"Ooow... My head... What just happened? How long have I been out? The last thing,
I remember... is using the time machine... It usually makes me a little light headed, but never anything like this..." And when my eyes fell upon the floor, my anxiety rose like castor sugar dough in a puff-pastry. "NO! No...no...no! My time machine... It's blown to bits". It all happened so quick, one moment I was in the Archon secret lab and now, this? I was in a completely new place now. The time machine room was now till ankle level filled with cold icy water and all the walls were like tilled but at the same time dabbed with water marks and...burnt? I made my way out and found that Archon's sub-level 2 is now a part of a little forest-cave sanctuary. There was a skeleton in a Hazmat suit hanging from the wall. He was wearing some kind of mask with a long and wide pipe at the nose part. The area's walls were mossy and overgrown with algae everywhere. Rocks were thrown everywhere. You can say it was like those pre-historic ages with a spice up of our little bit technology as some lights were glowing nearby giving a little warmess and a strange feeling.
I saw the departed time machine not far away near a lighted cave. "That time traveller must be nearby! I must tread cautiously!" I also saw a power generator with a blueprint panel like thing on top written on it 'Berner's Solar'. The wire carried on to the time machine, all out of power and the energy cell. *Sneeze* I sneezed faintly while making my way to the caves. Inside I saw a fire burning, with a man sitting there tightly by himself while grasping a little porcelain cup in his hand, and his eyes suddenly opening. "...Ah, Joe! Please...need...water!" "FRANK!? What are you... How?" "Please...!" "I-I'll get for...you some water. Hang in there...!"
I took the cup from his hand and from the mini pond in the room where my time machine exploded, filled it with that cold water and made my way back. "I'm most probably hundreds... or even thousands of year in the future. It might be my time remote, being a portable one couldn't handle this much alteration all at once, but how could Frank have made it here...?" *Sneeze* I once again sneezed while carrying that cup but still hurriedly gave it to Frank. "Here you go Frank". He took the cup from my hand and drank it. "Ah! Thank you Joe!" As soon as he put the cup down, he gave a sigh of pain and gave me the exact answers, I've been curious for...
"I'm... not sure! I don't understand, what are you doing here but I had no time - pushed it as far as it'd go. But from what I've been reading here, everything gets... imprecise, the farther you travel. Even your physical location can get messed up. Nobody's been this far... ever, Joe!" "I don't get it. So...you're a time pilot now?"
"Do I really need to spell it out for you, Joe? I stole it...! Look, Joe I've got no reason to tell you, but I guess it doesn't matter. You're the last person I would share anything with, anyway. The truth is... I'm a Soviet Agent". "Oh c'mon cut it out, Frank. I'm not falling for that one again! Look, you're just sick - confused..."
"*in Russian accent* I'm not joking, Joe!" "C'mon, you can't be. Where's your usual American accent?" "Joe, I'm an undercover agent deployed by the Kremlin. My -job- is to fit in. How far do you think I'd get if I went around calling everyone 'comrade...'?"
' My real name is Yuri Baryshaw. I came to America in my early twenties. I went to school here, worked here and spent nearly ten years building the foundation of an ordinary life. But the truth is that my life is far from ordinary, I'm a 'spy'. I was planted by the Soviet Foreign Intelligence Agency to gather Intel on advanced US military research programs and started getting my first missions in the mid-sixties. At the time I thought I had bullt a promising portfolio of leads, but as I started to pursue them, most of them turned out to be worthless! By 1968, I'd run out of my goodwill with the handlers at the Kremlin. I was a disgrace to them now, and was then headed for extraction.
Desperate for something -anything- to report, I came across a Canadian company moving large shipments of Iridium, Cerium and Osmium... Rare metals not typically used in mainstream manufacturing. The buyer turned out to be a government shell, rerouting the materials to some unofficial contactors - one of many which turned out to Archon. Having convinced my superiors that I was onto something, I got a job as a janitor. But I didn't dig up much...until you showed up. You were a great distraction, giving me plenty of chances to access off-limits areas and for a while, I was able to scrounge together enough intel to keep the Kremlin happy.
My hunch was correct, but I didn't have the full picture - not yet. The metals were being used to build something unusual, all right... But I just couldn't plece it together. What I found made no sense. Time travel... Doomsday scenarios... It read like some bad science fiction. For a while, I thought they were on to me - feeding me bogus information, but as time went on and with security tightening around the labs, I began to suspect that my intel was legit. By then, time was running out. With Brezhnev and your president Hill, set to negotiate the new 'Nuclear Disarmament Treaty' in some few weeks, my superiors were demanding results. With my job on the line, I got a little desperate...and careless. And then this morning, I got caught!
I was tailing an engineer into an off-limits lab when I bumped into Barney from the security. Ironically, management chalked up my trespassing to cluelessness, and settled for just firing me. Knowing I won't get another chance, I stole a security badge and snuck back in. I'd just found the time machine operator's manual and when things were going right, you rerouted the whole system somehow and we all got screwed up here!'
"Listen Joe, I'm really sick and I'm not making it back. But...you still can! The time machine, you might know has a timer - like a 'toaster'. It's designed to return back to initial point until the timer's reset. I earlier removed that cell... the main energy supply fuse to keep it from taking off without me. Here...take it!" He gave me a small fuse with some greyish black fluid inside. "I have no idea how you got here, and I guess it doesn't matter. Still, despite my mission, the double life and my deceit towards you, my friendship was always genuine. You're an honest guy Joe, and I've really enjoyed your company. *nngg* N-now please leave me. The p-pain's coming back. Hurts to...
t-talk... Need...rest..." His breathing stopped and his head bowed towards the ground. He...was no more! I silently turned towards the cave exit. *Sneeze* I sneezed once again while on my way to the time machine. *cough* *cough* This air was not suiting me... So I hurried to the time machine, put the fuse in and pressed 'Return back to the sender'. The machine spinned and then all I heard was a '𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵'!
My head was once again spinning and when I came out from the time machine capsule to the Lab 2A(i), everywhere I saw was fire burning. Suddenly, all the alarms started blaring and the door shut by what was called an 'Emergency Shutdown'. 'WARNING! SOME FOREIGN ORGANISM DETECTED! WARNING!' "Ugh... Foreign Organism? What's going on? What *cough* what is happening right now?" I saw a crack in the wall connecting Lab 2A(i) with 2B due to the Time Machine crashing there. With a little difficulty, I was able to open that and went ahead when another machine started blaring with the same message, 'WARNING! SOME FOREIGN ORGANISM DETECTED! WARNING!'
Soon I came to realise what's happening...
"No. No. It can't be...! The foreign organism,
it...it's me! I brought back the disease and I'm gonna be the one, that spreads it.
It... It was me...all along. I-I can't deal with this. W-what do I do...? By that time, I knew all the dreadful things I saw in the future was my doing...my act!
I was dumbstruck and clueless, up until I saw those cryogenic tubes. I have seen the outcome of those... very well but I also knew those were the only chances I could bet upon now. Therefore, in my extremely fatigued state, I somehow unlocked one of those cryo tubes, thought about how my life drastically changed in just a matter of few days and just a small promotion and closed my eyes letting the water flow around me freezing my body and my memories for a really long time ahead..!"
