Chapter 3 - His Chief Diplomat

Magito's Diplomat was at the castle's doors. At them, he met three people. Each one from a different nation close to Spalis. They all gathered to talk with Magito and his diplomat. But Magito was not in the mood for words. So the responsibility was laid solely on Kalas. Kalas greeted his guests and had the castle staff care for their needs. Kalas had long been a diplomat for Spalis but never its chief diplomat. Magito gave him the position after his dying father mentioned him as a prime candidate in a final letter he wrote. The late king wrote that Kalas had a knack for communication and a natural people pleaser. The fact he was the only known family member Magito trusted, this must have wrung true.

The group Kalas was best at conversing with was the Free Executioners. Magito often requested them, so Kalas knew to always be ready to send a message their way. But today, he housed representatives from Magito's neighboring nations. Kalas took pride in every meeting he held, no matter how small or insignificant. When communicating with those of the world, he knew respect and pride for oneself mattered most. Speaking with confidence and knowledge. However, his foreign contemporaries respected him, but easily convincing them to trust him in every manner was a different matter. He wasn't one to turn to manipulation, probably due to the fact he didn't have too great a skill in it. Those of the Royal State of Limula and the Tulit City-state would be better sorted. Neither of which were attending this meeting.

Kalas's guests came from the Kingdom of Rylu, the Eunuch Lands, and the United Queens Isles. Rylu a Kingdom much like Spalis although the viewing of its King, Artin, was more favorable in every way. The Eunuch Lands was a nation ruled by an esteemed class of citizen, the Eunuch. Revered as wise and calm, an old order of Eunuch came together and formed a settlement with many refugees from the ancient Farahbo-Spalis war. Hundreds of years later, that same Eunuch order continues its rule. The Queen Isles used to be an archipelago consisting of constant war and despair. Until, three Queens made a pact. They would kill their husbands and assume rule. Now, the three Queendoms in the Union form a confederation.

Another nation bordered Spalis, but they didn't receive an invitation from Kalas. The Kingdom of Farahbo, ruled by its local lords with the King acting mainly as a figurehead. Spalis and Farahbo never repaired their relations after their war shook the realm. Even 100 years later, tensions still exist.

Kalas brought the dignitaries all into his office. All of them sat around his red oak table. On it, a map of the region. With x's of all different colors surrounding the lands of Farahbo.

"Farahbo is not a weak nation. It's something all of our leaders realize. But we all know the benefits of finally dismantling such a proud people." Kalas opened with.

"Two of the Three Queens are already preparing for the war." The Queens Isles Diplomat, Marsha, said.

"Which Queen still lie on the fence?" Eunuch Lands Diplomat, York, said.

"Ulia, wants a greater share of Farahbo's land."

"That's ridiculous, they've already been given much more territory for Rylu!" Rylu's diplomat, Karten, says.

"I don't know what you wish me to say, but the Queens must all vote unanimously."

"Rylu is already getting the smallest portion. We will not stand for your absurdity. Our majesty, the King grows weary of this entire plan!" Karten jabbered on.

"Us of the Lands, are simple. We want access to trade and shipping routes. And some settlers from Farahbo to help drive our population up." York stated.

"Of course you're simple, getting more land only drives up a target on your tiny back. Your army is the smallest of all. Words are the only thing that keep you alive." Marsha quips.

"Watch your mouth, Woman." York said tensely.

The air of the room was so tense it had a taste. Diplomats carried the fates of nations on their shoulders to every meeting they attended. Their standing with the rulers who trusted them so. It wasn't a mere trade deal they were speaking of. It was a war to entirely destroy a nation. A society. A people. Rob them of their independence. Of their identity.

"It might be time for a break. Don't you all agree?" Kalas broke the silence.

The room lost its taste and with a snap of Kalas's fingers. Servers entered his office with food and Spalis wine for the diplomats. Kalas watched the room and waited for ease to come back into it. Once it had returned. He snapped again and the servers left. Kalas was the first one to speak.

"Discourse gets us nowhere. This war has been in the plans for months. I tire of the fruitless arguments and debates we wage amongst one another. Today, we come to an agreement that will make all our lieges happy."
