Saturday.
Day of the party at Kayler's house which, of course, I am not going to go. I will not go because it is obvious that all the popular boys from school will be there, and the popular ones obviously. I don't fit in there. I prefer to be alone in my house watching a marathon of something, eating popcorn. Maybe order a pizza.
Today I spent organizing the things that were still to be sorted. I hung up some remaining pictures, cleaned the house, took out the trash, and waited for Mom. That he came today in the afternoon, around three o'clock. I already feel good. I took two pills that the nurse gave me yesterday and I think they have taken effect. But after a while I'll have two more. I was watching television in my pajamas. It was about seven thirty. The music was somewhat loud, and we are not so close.
A great lake separates us. From the living room window next to the TV I can see the house. From here you can see something small. The lights of all colors illuminate it. I can observe several cars parking and several people outside as well as inside. In the balcony. But where it should already be full is in the living room of his house. Yesterday he left without saying anything else. What is Kayler hiding from me? Is it something serious? He and his pack of louts - because they are louts and womanizers - are sure to hide something. Maybe they're serial killers, or girl kidnappers.
There are many options.
The moon was brighter than ever, it was reflected in the water. But I wouldn't want to go out at night again, lest the wolves be around here again. A chill ran through me as soon as I thought of that.
Wolves.
How could I allow Mom to come to this city so ... Unknown to us. And to think that the boy who was killed in this same forest lived in this same house. Perhaps he would sit in this same chair to gaze at the moon, not knowing that one day those animals were going to tear him apart. Because I'm sure it was the same wolves that wanted to kill me. The entrance bell takes me out of my thoughts and makes me alert. I stay still. What if they want to do the same thing from last time? No, this time I will not fall. But there is something that bothers me, who knocked on my door the day I was almost killed? She was obviously a person and, besides, I watched her run in the forest and hide, she even screamed!
The bell rings again.
Mom went to bed early because she was tired. What if I open? What if it's the wolf? I discarded that last definitively because the wolf is not going to come knocking on my door to tell me that he is going to kill me ... or is he? I got up from the couch and walked slowly to the door.
"Who is it?" I asked, feeling my voice fearful. If this time they do not respond I will not open.
"I'm Connor." I could breathe easy when I heard Connor's voice. I hurried to open the door. There he was, dressed super well. I admit Connor is hot.
"I come for you." He smiled sideways. I frowned.
"For me?" I asked, pointing at myself. Nod as if it's the obvious thing to do.
"So we can go to the party together. Don't tell me you weren't going to go." He crossed his arms.
Go with Connor to Kayler's party?
"Connor, I ..." I started saying, but he cut me off.
"I'm not taking no for an answer. Now go get dressed." He asked. "I can pass?"
What a fool. Had it outside in this cold. Where are my manners? I think the wolf ate them. "Sure, come in." Connor came by and I closed the door. I motioned for him to sit down and he did. Now, speaking of the party, obviously I'm not going. Although with Connor I think I'm protected. He has a car.
"I'll wait for you here.Go." He smiled. I bit my lower lip. How can I tell him I don't want to go if he took the trouble to come get me? I admit that I would very much like to go to that party, but I don't want to see Kayler; however it would be good to have fun for a while, to drink. Not to mention more.
"I'll be back in a few minutes." I smiled and went straight up to my room. I wore a dress not so short but not so long that it adhered well to my body. I put on some black ankle boots. I let go of my hair, combed it a bit. I lined my eyes and finally some paint on my lips. I think I'm fine like that. I took my phone and a jacket because it's so cold. I went downstairs and there was Connor watching animatedly a show. I cleared my throat getting his attention. As soon as his eyes met mine he got up immediately and just looked at me.
"Let's go?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, of course." I turned off the TV and we headed for his car. I feel insecure going out onto the patio at night, so I rush to get into the co-pilot seat. Connor raises his eyebrows.
"Why the rush?" He wanted to know jokingly, getting behind the wheel. He started the car and we headed toward Kayler's house.
"I don't like going out at night in the ... Forest." I let him know insecure. "It scares me a little."
He gave me a look full of questions. I know what he want to know. But I won't tell him anything, I have enough that Kayler laughed in my face.
"The forest is not bad." He murmured.
"It's not because of the forest." I confessed. "But what's in it."
And I regret having said that. I noticed that Connor frowned and looked at me for a second before turning his gaze back to the road. We entered the path that went straight to Kayler's house and for some reason I was getting nervous.
"You have seen something?"He asks me, I could hear some nervousness in his voice. "In the forest?"
I bit my tongue not to tell him. Oh my God! He and Kayler have lived here their entire lives and I don't think they haven't seen a fucking wolf. Am I the one going crazy?
"No, nothing." The rest of the way we passed it in silence until we finally reached Kayler's house. There were many cars, many people too. Connor parked a little way from the house and we got out. It feels weird to be in Kayler Brown's house for the first time, and his house is huge, from mine I see it small. We go into the house. The music was very loud, there were quite a few people dancing, others were sitting in the armchairs drinking or playing some strange game.
"Do you want something to drink?!"?Connor asks me over the music.
"Yes!"
He beckoned me to wait for him and I nodded. The least I wanted was to be alone here. I put on my jacket and forced myself to sit in an armchair that was lonely like me. Kayler doesn't even look anywhere, he's probably with Paige.
"I knew you were coming." Someone whispered in my ear. A whisper that made my skin tingle. I didn't have to turn around to see who it was.
Kayler.
"You need company?" He questioned, sitting across from me with a beer in his hand. His hair was tousled as usual. I could see his dark brown eyes despite the low light.
"Not."I replied curtly. "I'm better off alone than in bad company." I snapped. I'm not going to be nice to him. Yesterday he didn't say anything to me and I'm not very happy to say it. River.
"As rude as ever."
I did not answer. I need Connor to come over now. And as if my pleas were heard Connor appears with two beers. I smiled to myself.
"Here you have." He says, handing me the beer. I took it, taking a sip afterwards.
Connor notices Kayler and immediately his entire body stiffens.
"Well, well so you're coming with him." Kayler reproached, standing up.
"Yes, any problem?" Connor roared. Kayler nods his head. Apparently he's having a good time drinking.
"Yes, there is a problem."he starts. "You can't get close to her, Connor, do you know why?" He questions to him "Because Carolina Lane... "he indicates to me "She's mine."
