Chapter 19 - A Meeting of Knights

The streets of the port city teem with activity as the bustle of daily life unfolded. Amidst the throngs of bustling citizens, one can spot exuberant children darting about, their joyous laughter and playful exclamations adding to the rich tapestry of sounds that fills the air.

Still, many buildings were left in ruins, with walls crumbling and roofs caved in. The streets were littered with debris and the docks, which had been the city's main source of income, were damaged during the fight. Ships lay overturned in the harbor, their hulls smashed and broken.

The people of the port city however, were not ones to be defeated so easily. They banded together, determined to rebuild their city and reclaim their livelihoods.

Teams of workers could be seen throughout the city, clearing away debris and salvaging what they could from the ruins.

Volunteers distributed food and water to those in need, while others worked tirelessly to provide temporary shelter for those left homeless by the invasion.

Construction crews began the rebuilding process, starting with the most essential structures such as hospitals, and government buildings.

They used the rubble to construct makeshift houses and shelter for the people who were homeless.

As the days passed, the city slowly began to take on a new shape. The streets were cleared, and makeshift homes began to spring up.

The docks, though still in ruins, were being cleared and repaired. The marketplaces, though not yet back to their former glory, were beginning to see a trickle of merchants returning.

Small groups of people can be observed huddled together in hushed conversations, their voices blending with the clatter of hooves and the tread of footsteps on the cobblestone streets.

As I made my way through the bustling streets, a knight approached, "Ah, aren't you... Mumei? You were the one who helped protect our city and its citizens. I sincerely thank you for your help. Without you, I and the rest of the knights would have failed in my duty. Thank you very much!" he said as he bowed deeply, his broad shoulders and honed muscular build evident beneath his intricately-decorated armor emblazoned with the symbol of a phoenix. He carried a thin, long sword at his side, a weapon honed through years of practice.

I was caught off guard. "And who might you be, if I may inquire?" I queried.

Ernst appeared taken aback, the notion of someone forgetting him and then seeking his name was unprecedented in his 47 years of life.

"Allow me a moment... it will come back to me," I reassured. For a brief interval, I remained silent, directing my gaze downward in contemplation.

"Ahhh! You're the personal guard of the Queen, Sir... Ernst Kaiser!" I recollected.

"Precisely," replied Ernst, with a sense of relief evident in his tone.

"I apologize for the oversight in forgetting your name, that of such a esteemed individual. I must confess, I have a tendency to be forgetful," I admitted.

"No trouble at all. But what brings you to our charming city? I presume you're new here. You seem to be quite the traveler," Ernst inquired.

"Actually, I was just passing through, but it seems my departure will be further delayed," I replied.

"Yeah, with the region surrounding the city becoming increasingly insecure, traveling has become harder than ever. But soon, everything will return to normal," Ernst stated.

"Do you mean because of the dragon raid?" I asked.

"What else? Once the dragon is finally vanquished, the economy will begin to recover, reminiscent of the heyday of our kingdom. And then, we can rid the vicinity of the city of all the other monsters," Ernst replied.

"It seems like everyone is particularly eager to be rid of the dragon," I observed.

"Of course. This dragon not only poses a significant danger to the entire kingdom and neighboring countries but also exposes our vulnerabilities, which many are seeking to exploit. Many neighboring countries are pressuring us to eliminate the dragon, threatening to take matters into their own hands if we don't act swiftly. Besides, I want my daughter to grow up in the safest world possible," he explained.

"Oh, you have a daughter? What is her name, if I may ask?" I inquired, genuinely curious, leaning in to catch every detail of Ernst's response.

"Her name is Tomoko Rin Kaiser," Ernst replied, his voice carrying a gentle note of affection that seemed to embrace the name itself. "It's a unique and beautiful name, one that holds a special place in my heart."

"It certainly is," I agreed, a smile forming as I reminisced. "I seem to recall assisting a child with the same name."

Ernst's eyes widened in recognition, gratitude naturally flowing. "Ah, then you must be the one who guided Tomoko to me and aided her against those ruffians. Thank you so much! She's spoken quite highly of you. By the way, I'm heading home now, and I'd like to extend an invitation for tea as a token of our appreciation. My daughter has a strong desire to meet someone with your level of wanderlust. She's always dreamed of embarking on a grand adventure around the world."

"With such an adventurous father, it's no surprise that your daughter is also drawn to adventure. And I would be honored to accept your invitation for tea. I'm sure Tomoko would be thrilled to meet someone who has traveled as extensively as I have."

Ernst smiled warmly. "I'm glad to hear it. And I'm sure Tomoko will be overjoyed to have the opportunity to converse with someone who has experienced so much of the world."

Just then, a young girl with cascading red hair and emerald green eyes came running towards them. "Daddy~" she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as she caught sight of her father.

"Tomoko, my dear," said Ernst, scooping his daughter up into his arms and twirling her around. "I would like you to meet a new friend, Mumei. They are a traveler, just like you."

Tomoko's eyes widened with a sense of wonder as she gazed up at me. "Oh, you're the one who assisted me the other day, and you've truly traveled the world?"

I chuckled. "I have indeed, and I have many stories to tell."

Tomoko Rin's face lit up with excitement as she heard Ernst talking about Mumei's adventures. "I can't wait to hear them!" she exclaimed. She had always been fascinated by stories of exploration and adventure and was eager to learn more about the world beyond her city.

As we made our way to Ernst's home, our little chat was suddenly interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps approaching.

We turned to see a female knight with short, grey hair that was styled in a ponytail and striking purple eyes. Two hair ornaments adorn each side of her head, adding to her unique look. Her face contorted into a scowl, the furrows on her brow deepening with every passing moment.

Following closely behind her, with an air of sheepishness and a sincere apology etched across his features, was a man of striking presence. His silvery, closely-cropped hair gleamed like moonlight reflecting on a tranquil sea, and his piercing gray eyes conveyed an unspoken depth.

He was clad in snug-fitting obsidian-black full-body tights that clung to his muscular form, granting both unrestricted mobility and an aura of enigmatic allure.

Draped over this second skin was a suit of lightweight armor meticulously fashioned by the most skilled blacksmiths of Arvandor.

Adorned with intricate patterns of swirling silver and cryptic, enchanting runes, this armor spoke of a formidable heritage.

Good morning. What a delightful coincidence to encounter you both here," greeted Ernst, extending a welcoming hand to the two knights.

With a courteous nod towards us, Ernst proceeded to introduce the valiant knights with an air of reverence. "Allow me to present Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival."

Our eyes shifted between the knights, curiosity dancing in our expressions as Ernst continued his introductions. "And these are my beloved daughter, Tomoko, and the honorable Nanashi Mumei, a courageous soul who aided us in our harrowing battle against the relentless wyverns and monstrous foes."

But Lancelot seemed uninterested in the introductions, instead directing her attention solely to Ernst. "Ernst, accompany me to the palace at once. I have urgent matters to discuss with the queen," Lancelot said, her tone cold and dismissive.

Tomoko and I exchanged perplexed glances, uncertainty coloring our expressions. Yet, Ernst seemed to grasp the gravity of the situation, offering a nod of understanding before turning to me.

"I apologize for this abrupt turn of events, but I must attend to this pressing matter. Could you guide Tomoko safely home, dear Mumei? She is familiar with the way. I regret having to impose on you once more. Rest assured, I will extend an invitation for tea on a more leisurely occasion."

"No problem," I replied with a firm nod, my empathy and comprehension for the pressing matter evident in my response.

Lancelot's demeanor, however, remained unyielding, and she continued to hurl verbal barbs at Ernst, her words sharper than a well-honed blade. "Your duty is to safeguard the city, not engage in idle tea parties with strangers," she chastised, her tone laced with disdain. "I fail to fathom why the Queen even deigns to converse with you," she added, her disdain palpable.

Percival, ever the peacemaker, attempted to intervene, his intentions to defuse the situation noble but ultimately ineffectual.

"Lancelot can be disrespectful at times, but she doesn't really mean it, I think. She simply is often in a bad mood, sorry," he offered in a sheepish tone.

His conciliatory efforts, rather than quelling Lancelot's ire, seemed only to add fuel to the smoldering fire of her frustration.

As the tension threatened to reach its breaking point, salvation arrived in the form of a newcomer whose composed and assured presence served as a balm for the festering discord.

"Sir Lancelot, Sir Ernst, I implore you both to cease this quarrel," he beseeched with a voice that carried authority and wisdom. "Our shared goal should be to collaborate in resolving the predicament before us."

"Ah, Temma, it's a relief to see you," Ernst acknowledged with a hint of strain in his voice, as though grateful for the arrival of a calming influence.

As Tomoko and I made our way toward her home, Ernst, Lancelot, and Temma set off on their journey to the palace, leaving Percival to attend to pressing matters of his own. The group dispersed, each member deep in their own contemplation about the unfolding situation.

Tomoko couldn't help but mull over the mysterious urgency of their departure. "I wonder what could be so pressing that they had to leave in such haste," she mused aloud, her curiosity palpable.

Sharing her curiosity, I responded, "Indeed, it must be a matter of great importance. But sometimes, certain details are meant to remain hidden. For now, let's focus on ensuring you arrive home safely."
